Pockets in dresses. Sorry, but I really don't see what all the hype is about

Everyone on instagram seems to be obsessed with any garment that has pockets. I've tried to see the benefit, I really have. I've even started to post about dresses I own that have pockets, and wax lyrical about how much I love them, but I'm just not feeling it. I'd much rather carry a bag. What is the big deal with pockets??

I like pockets to put my hands in, it makes me feel more comfortable.

FreeButtonBee · 30/04/2019 14:23

I like them for when I am in the office - carry hand bag to work with all my crap in it then pop my little card wallet into my pocket with my work pass and debit card into dress pocket. otherwise I get locked out going to the loo (yes, really). Also handy for popping out for lunch and useful to pop a pen in when going to a meeting so I only have a notebook in my hand. I hate carrying 5 things in my hand on the way to a meeting, struggling to open the pass locked doors/rom door/shake hands etc then dropping a pen/pass/phone.

I also like a weekend dress with a pocket - again, I will normally have a bag of crap for the kids but I like to have my phone and debit card on me. Then I can ditch the kiddy bag o' crap by the bikes/pile of coats without worrying too much about it being nicked. I make DH carry house keys...

Bestfootforward1 · 30/04/2019 14:23

No dont like pockets. They spoil the line of the dress and Ive got enough lumps and bumps of my own underneath the dress without adding more.

RuffleCrow · 30/04/2019 14:26

I have pockets in the dress i'm currently wearing. They're not much use tbh. On the hip so a mobile phone or keys would be in danger of falling out.

letsgohooray · 30/04/2019 14:27

Pockets never feel secure enough to me. I wouldn't want my credit cards etc in a flappy pocket in a loose skirt. My keys and wallet are way to heavy anyway and who needs extra bulk around the hips anyway?

Hecketyheck · 30/04/2019 14:44

AnneTwackie I am usually not one to be phased by many things, but I'm very stressed out about the idea of chocolate buttons in pockets - the mess that would make!

(I love a pocket - or two - and this bloody faux-pocket nonsense - what's that all about?)

reluctantbrit · 30/04/2019 14:46

I like that I have the choice. I still take a bag most of the times as even pockets in trousers are too small but if I work I can now take things with me for a short trip to the loo (yes, I need a key card to come back to my desk), tissues can vanish if I am in a meeting and if I pop over the road to get a sandwich I don't have to juggle 5 things in my 2 hands.

feelingverylazytoday · 30/04/2019 14:48

Pocketless clothing is all about silhouette, so puts showing off the figure over the practical needs of the wearer
Or the wearer doesn't feel any practical need to carry things around with them. Not sure about it being feminist either, my son always takes a small backpack out with him instead of putting stuff in his pockets.

Teddybear45 · 30/04/2019 14:51

I have never understood the need for pockets for either men or women. It ruins the look and feel of the material over time if you use them, aren’t always big enough anyway to put everything you need, and just make you look scruffy. They are also a pickpocketing risk so if you’re a commuter like me you might as well use a bag.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 30/04/2019 14:54

I love pockets but I don't actually put anything in them, I just like to stroll around with one or both hands in them and then throw the occasional pose.

MissParple · 30/04/2019 14:55

I never put anything in my trouser pockets so pockets on dresses are of no interest to me. Don't understand people getting so excited about them. But it's a thing these days for people to wang on 'oooooh, pockets!'.

Prinstress · 30/04/2019 14:56

Haven’t RTFT but can’t stop singing “you’ve got to pick a pocket or two” now

Yes agreed - ruins your clothes and is more of a pickpocketing risk than cross body zipped bag

Recently sure a picture of a wedding dress with pockets. Almost worth getting married just to wear the dress.
I love pockets in skirts and dresses - place for tissues, etc. Meet a woman last summer from Taiwan who had a series of summer dresses with three pockets along the front of the dress. I really wanted one !
I think liking pockets in dresses and skirts is far more main stream than posting in Instrgram pretending to like something. Or am I just demonstrating my social media naivety?

HebeMumsnet · 30/04/2019 15:02

In defence of pockets, I'm going to say that I like them as a decluttering method.

I have a couple of tunics with very big pockets which are very useful. As you go round the house you can fill them with discarded Lego pieces, Shopkins, bits of Blu-tak smuggled home from school, party bag toot, rubbers... (you get the picture). When I get to the kids' bedrooms I upend them onto the floor and shout at them to tidy it up (if I'm feeling generous). If I'm not I empty it all into the bin.

I bet Marie Kondo wishes she'd thought of this first.

DPotter · 30/04/2019 15:04

If anyone wants to pickpocket my snotty tissues - they are more than welcome.

DPotter · 30/04/2019 15:04

Hebe - you have style..........

museumum · 30/04/2019 15:07

I love pockets because I have a big bag with laptop or iPad and water bottle etc but don’t want to carry it around all day. I put my swipe or debit card and phone in my pocket for moving about the office.

Namestheyareachangin · 30/04/2019 15:08

It seems to me there is a straight line down the middle here of people who value the way their clothes look and people who value how useful their clothes are. Pockets are flipping great, especially if you have children and don't always have a hand to spare for a bag (unless backpack, the bloody straps always slip off my slopey shoulders). Keys, phone and credit card and I can leave the bloody house with a pocket. Particularly useful on summer dresses when no coat and the last thing you want is to be shouldering a bag in the heat. And yeah as DD not yet potty trained I already need her bloody bag, don't want to have to contend with one of my own!

Don't give a shit if it ruins the 'line' of my dress tbh. Who's bloody looking at me anyway, I'm a dumpy mid-thirties mum who doesn't titivate. I just want to be able to move freely!

ShowMeTheKittens · 30/04/2019 15:13

You can always stuff things down your bra and pockets make your bum look big. I'd rather my tits looked big. And knobbly.

Chippychipsforme · 30/04/2019 15:14

I love them! Perfect for quick trips out. You can keep sweets in them. Or gerbils. Or socks.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/04/2019 15:15

I didn't know there was any hype. Perhaps I don't get out as much as I like to think I do

lostelephant · 30/04/2019 15:15

Shamelessly squealed yesterday when I realised the second-hand dress I'd bought off eBay had pockets in Grin

CheeseToastieAndABrew · 30/04/2019 15:16

I love pockets, the more the better. I hate carrying bags and sometimes struggle to fasten my coat in winter because my pockets are so full of winter items! 😂

HebeMumsnet · 30/04/2019 15:17

DPotter You are the first and possibly the last person ever to say that to me but you've made my day. Wink
