Pockets in dresses. Sorry, but I really don't see what all the hype is about

Everyone on instagram seems to be obsessed with any garment that has pockets. I've tried to see the benefit, I really have. I've even started to post about dresses I own that have pockets, and wax lyrical about how much I love them, but I'm just not feeling it. I'd much rather carry a bag. What is the big deal with pockets??

You don't have to like them, wear them or post anything on social media about them. Problem solved!

I imagine they're a 'thing' because they're unusual, and women's clothes - including trousers - more frequently than not don't have pockets, or have useless ones for aesthetic purposes only. I don't personally post - or see - anything about clothes on my social channels so haven't seen it myself (but will occasionally have a conversation with my work colleague who buys dresses and will comment when she finds one with pockets).

Are you crazy? Grin

I am currently wearing a Cos dress with massive pockets. I currently have: chewing gum, my phone, a pair of garden secateurs, and a pencil on me. These have been useful about 50 million times already today.

Pockets are the BEST. One day I plan to get two kittens so I can put them in and carry them about all day.

sweepsweep · 30/04/2019 13:46

One of the winning factors of my wedding dress was it having lovely deep hidden pockets. I didn't need to carry a bag and have to keep passing it to bms or putting it down for photos. Also why do baby and toddler clothes have pockets and most nursing clothes don't?

BumbleBeee69 · 30/04/2019 13:46

I have several beautiful dresses with deep pockets.. I love them ..
so convenient Flowers

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 13:46

@Kokeshi123 exactly. The amount of crap that ends up in my washing machine is justification in itself

I don't like pockets at all, and really hope they don't become a thing. The exception is a winter coat, I like those to have secure pockets, with at least one that zips, but I've never had any difficulty finding coats like that.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/04/2019 13:47

I like pockets even though I carry a bag. I get frustrated when I don't have them for temporary usage, eg when I pick up a parcel it's handy to put my car keys in my pocket, I need to have my phone in one hand and operate the keypad with the other but I don't want to put my keys away in my bag because I'll be getting straight back in the car again, or if I've used a tissue and need to throw it in the next available bin.

OneStepSideways · 30/04/2019 13:47

I think it spoils the line of the dress to have lumpy pockets stuffed with keys/phone/wallet etc! And not very secure unless they have zips. More sensible to wear jeans if you don't want to take a bag?

Some of my dresses have pockets but I only ever keep a tissue in them, anything else weighs it down and creates strange bulges!

Cranky17 · 30/04/2019 13:48

. But then that's because DH doesn't want keys in his pockets. And neither would I! It looks awful does dh carry a bag?

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 13:48

@snarfblatt No it just winds me up when I see everyone swooning over them and I can't join in. Makes me wonder if everyone is jumping on the bandwagon because it's a thing. Clearly not though if the majority here love them too

I didn't know Lily out of Peter Rabbit had started a Thing.

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 13:49

@Cranky17 Nope. Uses mine

I love a pocket and am totally behind the theme of pockets. It's true that some clothes can look a bit bulky and weird once you fill the pockets, but most of what I wear could easily incorporate a pocket and I hate it when they don't. Esopecially for short trips like the school run where I just want to be carrying my phone and maybe a bank card stares aggressively at my banks who don't facilitate Samsung or Google Pay and have to carry poo bags for the dogs.

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 13:50

@sweepsweep I can see the point of them in a wedding dress - lots of fabric to hide bulges and no one wants to carry a bag with a wedding dress

margaritasbythesea · 30/04/2019 13:51

I loathe pockets. They've ruined the line of many a potentially good dress. I could easily do without them in trousers and jeans too.

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 13:51

Maybe my problem is I'm always freezing so I always have a coat!

cucumbergin · 30/04/2019 13:52

I have a dress with side pockets that I can fit a smartphone into on one side, keys on the other, and you cannot tell the difference between empty and full pockets.

Sometimes you just need better designed pockets.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/04/2019 13:52

I love pockets on skirts and dresses. When I wore suits to work I would only unpick one jacket pocket to keep my security pass in it - any more and the line of the jacket would be messed up.

Now I tend to wear skirts and dresses and a pocket is very useful as I tend to need to carry pen/pad/phone/camera with me and can't really lug a handbag around. Some designer are very smart about how and where they add them so I don't look like a heffalump.

snarfblatt · 30/04/2019 13:52

But people must swoon over loads of things you can't always join in with @ActuallyMummy? Ugly babies, pygmy hedgehogs, designer handbags, Jude Law... I think you have a mild case of FOMO Wink

SoupDragon · 30/04/2019 13:53

I like posters but only if they are proper man pockets and not stupid girly sized ones.

aidelmaidel · 30/04/2019 13:54

I used to go out with DD in the carrier and a bottle of milk, a clean nappy, a bag of wipes, keys, phone, spare babygro, cash, and some sort of baby toy in my pockets. No bag to get tangled up in the carrier. Was super.

Genevieva · 30/04/2019 13:56

Pocketless clothing is all about silhouette, so puts showing off the figure over the practical need of the wearer. Pockets are therefore a feminist accessory.

That is the argument - decide for yourself what you think.

SoupDragon · 30/04/2019 13:56

Pockets. Not sodding posters FFS.

starfishmummy · 30/04/2019 13:56

I liked pockets for work. Although it was a desk based job, we had members of the public in our office so it wasn't advisable to leave money/phones/keys in our desk drawers so I liked pockets to put them in.

LaCastafiore · 30/04/2019 13:57

I love pockets, I am very happy if Meghan and the others bring them back in fashion. Many dresses look better with them I think.

Pockets in dresses. Sorry, but I really don't see what all the hype is about
