Hello everyone, here's thread 2.

I'd be very grateful if someone could do a clicky link to the last one. Still can't figure it out.

Thanks!

Am delighted your Majesty.
Now let the chat/gossip begin Ma'am.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 20:49

I think we were on accents.....

I watched Diana's Panorama interview, and her voice was mesmerising. She could almost hypnotise you!

So, where were we? Royal voices? Edward VIII apparently sounded Mockney and "affected americanisms". He used to say "Dook" for "Duke". He appears to have picked this up from Wallis calling him "Dookie". I reckon he did it to annoy Queen Mary!

Given that Mary endured George's stamp collection, insistence on a tiny house and middle class furniture and him getting his parrot out at the table, I reckon she wasn't exactly trembling in her boots at a bit of Mockney.

FannyWork · 29/04/2019 20:52

Someone mentioned Princess Michael at the restaurant, she told them to ‘go back to the colonies’ and she had two black sheep that she called Venus and Serena. And when she gets pulled up on being racist she gives it all the ‘PC gorn mad, can’t even ask for a black coffee anymore’ tripe that proper racists always do.

She and her husband have an open marriage too and aren’t very subtle about it.

MarkleSparkle · 29/04/2019 20:52

I know obviously Meghan must be so used to the public interviews etc, but when they did the fab 4 interviews, launching their mental health initiatives I think, hearing Kate next to Meghan made me wince.

I can totally see the Queen getting on well with Sophie.

Agree the blackamoor thing was horrific. Utterly vile, to use the MN term.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 20:53

That's shocking!

Edward really seemed to rebel against his 'birthright' didn't he?

Sort of a childish "I'll do anything except what's expected of me". That's the vibe I get anyway.

'getting his parrot out at the table'

I hope that's not a euphemism.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/04/2019 20:55

I remember hearing Prince William speaking as a toddler (on their Australia tour photo call) and he sounded very much posher than I expected. You don't expect it with very little children but of course he would speak with his parents' accents.

I don't think Kate's accent is ridiculous, but then I watch MIC. I practically need subtitles.

MissParple · 29/04/2019 20:57

I knew Princess Michael was insufferable but I didn't realise she was quite so awful. What a horrible old racist.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/04/2019 20:57

What was George V’s tiny house?
Surely they lived at Buckingham Palace?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/04/2019 20:59

I'm waiting for someone to complain about Kate, a young mother, being vilified. Oh wait, won't happen.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 21:02

No, @MissParple it was a real parrot.

Queen Mary didn't seem very fussed about Edward's rebellion- or at least didn't bend to it- which probably made him angrier still and push him to rebel even more. "Look mum, no hands! Look mum, NO CROWN!"

Again- Mary was tough, she rode out King George insisting on "Daisy daisy" being played at their wedding and she practically staged sit ins to acquire funiture. Edward was no match.

Alwayscheerful · 29/04/2019 21:03

Thanks for the new thread.

lyralalala · 29/04/2019 21:04

Princess Michael showed her lack of class when she explained the colonies comments.

“I did not say “back to the colonies,” I said you “should remember the colonies.” Back in the days of the colonies, there were rules that were very good.”

As if that somehow made it any better!

lyralalala · 29/04/2019 21:05

What was George V’s tiny house?

They lived at York Cottage in Sandringham for donkeys years.

TartanTexan · 29/04/2019 21:06

Most of the girls sound like Kate at Marlborough & Cheltenham Ladies & Calne quite close by. It’s the house accent & you pick it up without realising it.

NigellaAwesome · 29/04/2019 21:06

I'm in awe of Meghan's lovely slim legs and ankles at her stage of pregnancy. Other than the bump, she really doesn't look pregnant at all. I looked like a ship in full sail by that stage.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 21:10

I imagine him to be exactly that sort! Kind of like my seven year old!

OP posts:
DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 21:10

@CurlyWurlyTwirly- they had York cottage on the Sandringham estate as their "home" to start out and before George took the throne. George picked it. He liked small rooms after being on ships, apparently and they had modern furniture, I think! People were not impressed at the heir living like the middle classes. Also Alexandra was veeeeery slow to give up the best bits of Buck House upon becoming Dowager Queen Grin.

Queen Victoria was supposedly a "middle class Monarch" so she was probably the start of the "accessible royal" brand. Edward definitely lived like a king though! The other "middle class Monarch" in private at least despite the jaw dropping wealth was Tsar Nicholas, believe it or not.
