Just got the results from my Ancestry DNA kit.
My brother did his a while ago, he has come up in my details as close family/first cousin.
We have a 1535 Match of centimorgans or whatever it's called. This does not look good does it?

Isn’t brother close family? Sorry- I don’t know anything about dna kits

Isadora2007 · 06/04/2019 14:30

Hmmm quick google

To ask if we don't have the same dad.
BrotherlyLove · 06/04/2019 14:32

Yes, I'm hoping someone can tell me it's anomalous.
I feel very sick.

BloodsportForAll · 06/04/2019 14:34

Well this is interesting. I wonder what's going on. Have you spoken to your mum?

GregoryPeckingDuck · 06/04/2019 14:35

Just bare in mind that those tests are quite dodgy.

BrotherlyLove · 06/04/2019 14:35

No I haven't yet, didn't want to jump the gun and we already have a strained relationship.

OP posts:
Littleraindrop15 · 06/04/2019 14:36

Think you need to speak to your brother and family sounds like a half sibling

BrotherlyLove · 06/04/2019 14:37

I thought they had a good reputation?
Obviously I can't go charging in with wild questions.

OP posts:
ZippyBungleandGeorge · 06/04/2019 14:37

OP I read an article about identical twins doing one of those tests and getting different results. They are genetically identical! Don't put too much store in it, they're a gimmick

BrotherlyLove · 06/04/2019 14:38

My dad is not in a position to handle this news well.

OP posts:
notapizzaeater · 06/04/2019 14:39

Does he need to know ?

UtterlyDesperate · 06/04/2019 14:39

There's apparently some groups on Facebook that can help you interpret your results, OP.

At this stage, though, I'd keep it entirely to yourself.

BrotherlyLove · 06/04/2019 14:40

No
That indeed is my conundrum, do I speak to anyone about my concerns?

OP posts:
DontCallMeCharlotte · 06/04/2019 14:40

Then again, someone I know has just been contacted by an adult child they never knew existed...

Good luck OP Smile

SaskiaRembrandt · 06/04/2019 14:40

Those tests don't have a great reputation. I've heard of people doing multiple tests and getting different results. They aren't the same as the sort of testing done by courts or hospitals, for example.

00100001 · 06/04/2019 14:41

They're nonsense.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 06/04/2019 14:41

Op, you could mention to your mum that you are intending to get a DNA test for ancestry reasons. You will be able to tell by her reaction IMO

BrotherlyLove · 06/04/2019 14:41

I will definitely sit on it at the moment, but will have to decide what to do long term.

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 06/04/2019 14:43

I was just away to say the same as a pp they did studies with twins and these kits and the matches were ridiculous it was on a US tv show, your brother might be a half sibling or not but I don't think you should be saying anything out loud

Myyearmytime · 06/04/2019 14:43

They are not nonsense.
They are very good.
Get on to facebook like dna detectives
And ask your question.
They are near enough experts.
People on mumsnet.. ....

BrotherlyLove · 06/04/2019 14:45

Mumsnet was my only source, not on Facebook.

OP posts:
Ginger1982 · 06/04/2019 14:45

Has there been any suggestion in the family before that you might not be full siblings?

Absolutepowercorrupts · 06/04/2019 14:45

Have you ever thought or suspected that you and your brother may have different fathers?
You say that your relationship with your mother is difficult, I'm not asking for any details here but do you have reason to think that she may have had an affair.

BrotherlyLove · 06/04/2019 14:46

Plenty of matches in my mum's side, shared family etc, not a bloody thing on my dad's.
