Just got the results from my Ancestry DNA kit.
My brother did his a while ago, he has come up in my details as close family/first cousin.
We have a 1535 Match of centimorgans or whatever it's called. This does not look good does it?

Op, how do you know your Dad is your Dad and not his Dad? What if your Dad is not your biological Dad?

Given your Mum's cousin showed a higher match with you, is there a possibility of distant 2nd cousin romance or something?

BrotherlyLove · 08/04/2019 22:35

No my mum's cousin came after a member of my dad's family on my matches.
My db has none of my dad's side as matches in his profile.
Also as previously mentioned I am the image of my dad.

We brought an ancestry kit for my dad for Xmas. Fully expected more siblings and lo and behold got a email last week to say that a close match had been found.

According to ancestry it was either 1c or 2c. But this wasn't possible for his age compared to my dads. His father didn't know his father and only had a name, albeit spelt wrong. Looks likely that this match is my dads half-nephew.

I've just sent mine off and my mum said she now thinks that I might have a half-sibling from my dad (before he met my mum). But this would've showed up on his test!

Your shared cm is roughly the same as my dads full nieces and nephews, so I'd imagine that he is your half-brother.
Now, he may have received an email from them already to say that a close match had been found. So he may have already checked it out before you deleted the account.

gingerfreckles · 08/04/2019 23:36

@azulmariposa a half sibling wouldn't necessarily have should up on your dad's test if the person/half sibling hasn't taken the ancestry test.

azulmariposa · 08/04/2019 23:56

@gingerfreckles I know! Only two of my cousins have done the test. There's another thirty or so that haven't.

I think that more and more people will do the tests, especially as they become cheaper. Some companies even do the tests for free for people that have been adopted. Most people that I know that have done the tests, have reasons such as adoption or having doubts over their parentage.

Was on this thread earlier. Have NC.

Just wondering how it's going OP.

Rosesaredead · 18/04/2019 03:26

They're not nonsense. They have a great reputation. I'd speak with your brother.

BrotherlyLove · 18/04/2019 07:42

@StatueService funny you should ask, I got a text from db a couple of days ago asking if I had received my Ancestry results back. I panicked a bit but haven't answered his message yet.
I am currently adopting the attitude of sticking my fingers in my ears whilst going lalalala hoping it all goes away.
I have even sent off for another test in the hope that a mistake was made.
I might just do the test and let him 'find' the results, I don't want to be the one to potentially turn his and my dad's world upside down.
Yes I know I'm a bloody coward amongst other things.

OP posts:
toddle · 18/04/2019 10:35

Be kind to yourself! Not cowardly at all. Just unfortunate you tested second. The test will not be incorrect unfortunately. More so if you have matches that you know to be family so you have a bit of thinking time with what your going to do. Could you maybe give the new one to your father?

StatueService · 18/04/2019 10:38

You're not a coward at all. You've just had a massive shock.

Do you think your brother could also be wondering?

MsChicken · 18/04/2019 10:52

They're not nonsense at all but they're not the most accurate. The range is quite broad. I've been using my Ancestry DNA test for a while and slowly but surely the connected names are staring to join up, going back 5 or 6 generations and details confirmed with other DNA testers. Those connections would simply never have been made otherwise without the Ancestry DNA test. However the tests aren't perfect, there are more accurate DNA tests you could do to find out for sure. Do like you said and sit on it for a while and think it through, it'll have such a huge impact.

bellinisurge · 18/04/2019 11:56

Flawed results. Very broad brush. Identical Twins get different results so siblings even more likely to. It is not full on scientific dna test.

BrotherlyLove · 18/04/2019 12:29

Well I'll soon see when I do another test.

OP posts:
beanaseireann · 18/04/2019 16:05

MsChicken what DNA test do you recommend ?

woolduvet · 18/04/2019 17:38

A good approach, say the first didn't work so you'll do it again. Then it's up to him if he draws the same conclusions.

MsChicken · 18/04/2019 19:14

DNA testing is used for legal purposes in custody cases etc and the government has a list of approved companies to use. You can find the list here........

www.gov.uk/get-dna-test

and here is an example of what you might be looking at plus cost....

www.alphabiolabs.co.uk/public-testing-services/sibling-dna-test/

These companies don't only offer tests to people who have been instructed by a court, you can use the tests for peace of mind as a members of the public, for a fee, to establish a the connection between two people, or not. Ancestry DNA type testing sweeps up anything it finds so is more vague and is not comparing two specific samples.

RandomMess · 18/04/2019 19:40

Urgh what a horrible birthday gift that has turned into Sad

zsazsajuju · 18/04/2019 19:50

I don’t think these tests are known to be unreliable generally. Yes, when it comes to the ethnicity analysis it’s still in its infancy and may or may not be accurate (that was the issue with the identical twins test). But DNA is an advanced science and you should share much more DNA with a full sibling. You may want to look into it further and see if you have any close cousins that could help you track down your ancestry.

A close friend found a half sister on ancestry that he didn’t know existed. I would say it’s fairly reliable in establishing family relationships.

BrotherlyLove · 18/04/2019 22:02

Lol at a company using Jeremy Kyle as some kind of authentication.
As said previously on this thread, although ethnicity analysis might not be all of that, the DNA analysis is apparently good.
I think I'm only prolonging the inevitable by waiting, but at least by doing two tests I can present more solid evidence when the s**t hits the fan which it inevitably will.Hmm

sirmione16 · 18/04/2019 23:01

There's a programme I think it's long lost family - they use ancestry to determine DNA and to look for long lost relatives etc so in my mind, they've got to have some degree of reliability if a TV programs is using it to do such things
