Do they have allergies? DB is asthmatic and has a few allergies, scented candles, plug ins etc really trigger a flare up meaning his sinuses swell, he needs to use his asthma pump and his eyes are red and itchy. If this is the case they should've told you and asked you to move them, but they might have a genuine reason

WhiteDust · 30/03/2019 20:54

Put candles back and switch thing back on.

Unless your HG has come out in hives or is struggling to breathe, YANBU.

girlwithadragontattoo · 30/03/2019 20:55

Have you said anything?

PurpleDaisies · 30/03/2019 20:55

I do this. I hate overpowering smells.

Bamchic · 30/03/2019 20:55

Is this in the room you’ve put them up in or a shared living space?
If the former and they put them back when they go home I see no issue. They can be overpowering and make people feel quite sick.
If the latter it’s odd.

CheekyChappy710 · 30/03/2019 20:56

YABU they give me headaches and I have no allergies it's just a super strong fake smell. Dont be so inhospitable.

Bamchic · 30/03/2019 20:57

Also my DM has that ambipur threevolution plug in, its a nightmare with my Athsma

polarpig · 30/03/2019 20:57

Probably allergies - we can't have them in our house for that reason.

GemmeFatale · 30/03/2019 20:58

They’re a migraine trigger for me. I go to my dad’s place and hide all his spray things away

MiniMum97 · 30/03/2019 20:59

YABVVVU.

Scented candles and plug in air fresheners release toxic chemicals into the air and a lot of people are very sensitive to them particularly if they have allergies or a chronic health condition.

I used to use them. I wouldn't now I know about he health risks but they also make me feel very unwell (headache, nausea, dizziness) since I developed autoimmune disease.

CastleCrasher · 30/03/2019 20:59

Lots of them give me migraines, even though I use them at home (different scents, ones that I don't react to) so I might discreetly do this in a room I was staying in and put them back when leaving.

LordNibbler · 30/03/2019 20:59

YABU plugins are vile.

Movinghouseatlast · 30/03/2019 21:01

If they are horrid artificial ones then I don't blame them. It is too much for some people.

Pegsinarow · 30/03/2019 21:01

Sorry op but I can't bear artificial scents.

Fr3d · 30/03/2019 21:01

UABU. They give me headaches so I would do the same, especially in a bedroom

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 30/03/2019 21:02

I have no allergies. Well, didn't.
I spent 3 months suffering with flu like stuff. It was horrible!
Then my plug in refresher run out. I was back to healthy in 4 days🤨

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 30/03/2019 21:02

Perhaps they could go to a hotel ?

m0therofdragons · 30/03/2019 21:04

What ages? It's a bit weird but not something to stress about.

MyAuntyBadger · 30/03/2019 21:04

Plug ins and scented candles make me feel really ill (headache and nausea), I would do the same as your guest and discreetly move them and turn them off. I wouldn't say anything as wouldn't want to make a fuss or offend you.

EffYouSeeKaye · 30/03/2019 21:06

Can’t bear plug-ins. MIL uses them and the dc reak when they’ve been visiting. I have to wash their hair to get the smell out. Horrible.

BuildingQuote · 30/03/2019 21:07

I would struggle with them too, I would just respect they might be sensitive to the chemicals or to the smells?

Butterymuffin · 30/03/2019 21:08

You don't just switch stuff off like that in someone else house, though. You explain how it's affecting you and ask politely if they could be switched off while you're there. If you have manners, that is.

IncrediblySadToo · 30/03/2019 21:09

They give me hideous headaches, a swollen & itchy throat and I throw up.

Depends on the situation whether I just remove them or ask them to. Family & friends usually remember to do it before I arrive. If someone hasn’t or they’ve forgotten the one behind the sofa or whatever there’s soon a hunt for the offending item.

Why do you prefer they suffer?

PurpleDaisies · 30/03/2019 21:09

Why not? Surely a considerate wouldn’t be bothered.

cstaff · 30/03/2019 21:10

It's still really rude to just blow them out or turn them off. The least they should do is ask and explain why.
