To think that my otherwise healthy 39 yo DB shouldn’t be trying not to die from sepsis?

Just that really. Best part of a week spent in ICU, where I’ve been staying o/night with DSiL as she is still bf their 7 month old. Now I’m home and I have time to think, and I think it is all a bit shit. I thought I should come home and see my DC and DH but I’m going to end up more emotional-wreck than rested. How on earth do I support my DM and DF as their beautiful son lies day after day, just-about-not-dying? How on earth can I hold space for my wonderful, brave DSiL and their two DC when I just want to shout and scream at him to stop being such a pillock and get the feck better?

I’m sorry your brother is so ill. My mum suffered with sepsis twice, she recover3, despite being I now poo4 health.

Look after yourself.

Sending positive vibes your way and to your DB.

My dad was in hospital a couple of months ago. He'd ignored a hernia for a year and told no one until asking to be taken to hospital. Hernia had ruptured, sepsis, lung clot, kidney failure. Was an awful time for us all but he was home with a stoma after a month. Although almost 70 he is quite fit and active (was working FT and walking miles to work each day). I think the fact your DB is young and, before now, healthy will stand him in good stead. Sending love and Thanks

agnurse · 02/04/2019 03:00

I'm so sorry. Unfortunately sepsis can develop very quickly and sometimes it's impossible to figure out the site of the original infection. It literally could have been something as minor as a small scrape that he didn't notice at the time.

CrohnicallyEarly · 02/04/2019 06:50

Is he definitely allergic to penicillin? If he had a rash type reaction it might be side affects rather than a genuine allergy. I remember reading so,thing about it before. (I am in that situation, the one and only time I had penicillin it gave me a rash)

I hope your brother gets better soon. My SIL had sepsis but narrowly avoided ICU. She was on chemo and closely monitored so it was picked up sooner than it might have been. Even with the chemo she made a full recovery.

MrsMozartMkII · 02/04/2019 06:55

I have everything tightly crossed for him.

MamaBearThius · 02/04/2019 07:10

Another Sepsis survivor here!! Sending positive strength to you and your family Brew

Damntheman · 02/04/2019 08:38

Thinking about you OP in this horrible time!

Another survivor story, my mother had sepsis off and on for two years and almost died (literally) twice from it. It was a LONG road to recovery, post sepsis syndrome is a real thing and difficult, but two years on and she's much better. Hoping the same for your brother!

Hobbesmanc · 02/04/2019 09:03

Awww really resonates with me. Two years ago on Easter weekend I ended up in crash with double pneumonia and sepsis- i had been struggling through what I thought was a chest infection. I was 45 and in good health. I spend two weeks in hospital and for the first few days it was touch and go- however with amazing hospital treatment I was back in work (part time) in six weeks) Hugs

SheldonSaysSo · 02/04/2019 09:08

I'm sorry you are going through this. Just thought I would add that it may be worth trying the penicillin even with an allergy (if doctors agree). When a family member had sepsis and penicillin allergy, we had to go ahead with penicillin as nothing else worked. They monitor carefully and give drugs to try to counteract the reaction.

Bornlazy · 02/04/2019 09:12

Keeping everything crossed for your DB OP. Having recently had a relative in ICU I know how utterly exhausting and stressful it is. I found the drs to be amazing but quite focused on preparing you for the worst. I know they have to do that but there were times when I felt it was a bit much. Flowers

beanaseireann · 03/04/2019 17:28

Hoping he's on the mend OP

doesthatmakesense · 03/04/2019 23:00

Thank you again for all your words of encouragement. At times of absolute despair, it can be a few words of hope and compassion that give us the strength to keep going.
The good news is that DB is showing signs of improvement-bloods looking much better, off ventilator and responsive. He was even able to open his eyes and grunt a hello to me earlier. There is a very long way to go, and he is still critically ill, but after a very long 10 days we all feel that there are reasons to be cheerful.

Thank you MN. Flowers

May he continue to improve.

Houseonahill · 03/04/2019 23:10

I hope he continues to improve Flowers

PineapplePatty · 03/04/2019 23:17

So glad he's showing improvement OP and very best wishes to you all.

Cornishclio · 03/04/2019 23:20

Goodness how scary for you. My son in law got sepsis, pneumonia, endocarditis and staphylococcus infection just over a year ago and was in hospital for 6 weeks, critical for first two weeks. My daughter was three months pregnant and had a two year old at the time. Hopefully your DB will be fine. Glad he seems improved.

Kintan · 03/04/2019 23:20

Amazing update OP! Being off the ventilator and being responsive are huge steps on the road to recovery x

Brenna24 · 03/04/2019 23:20

Awww, that's wonderful news. I hope that he continues to get better.

Paddy1234 · 03/04/2019 23:24

What wonderful news ❤️

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 03/04/2019 23:29

All crossed for you..!!

I had sepsis.. Post operatively... I was hours from death... I don't remember much of it... My poor family though.

They were told the odds were stacked against me...

That was over 25 years ago... I've been healthy and bouncey since...

Hope the same happens for you! Xx

berkshirecat · 03/04/2019 23:38

That's really awful OP. Sounds like you're doing an amazing job supporting your family. Thanks

Glad to hear your brother sounds like he's getting better. I had sepsis when I was 18 - spent 2 weeks in ITU and a further 2 weeks in hospital. Had multi organ failure and I was told I only had a 50% chance of making it. Terrifying for a 27 year old but I can't remember much of it, and needless to say, I'm here now with no ill effects so hopefully your brother will be the same Smile

Keep strong OP!

Jux · 03/04/2019 23:49

Flowers with hope for a speedy recovery after this improvement. Thinking of you.

UrsulaPandress · 03/04/2019 23:56
