To be upset with DS cello teacher

I’ve found out that the other children in my sons cello lesson have been entered for their grade 1 but not DS9.

They are all at the same level and started at the same time.

I contacted the cello teacher to ask why and she was very blunt and I feel insensitive. She said she decided not to enter him as she doesn’t feel he works hard enough or takes his lessons seriously!

She also said he can’t play in tune and maybe should try guitar or percussion! I believe his scales and pieces are up to scratch and feel he has been singled out.

I don’t agree or feel satisfied with this response, should I contact her employers to ask for further investigation?

Well... three comments on this...

1), we once had a music teacher taking a dislike to a DC. This was based on behaviour rather than ability. Think having only 10 min attention span, so improving between each lesson (as practiced supervised every day), but annoying to teach. We changed teacher and the situation resolved. Some teachers excuse challenging behaviour if the child improves quickly between lessons, some prefer a well behaved child and accept slower progress. It is all about the right teacher for your child.

  1. many children just don’t practice enough (or at all) or practice wrong, so progress between lessons is almost non existent. Our music teacher refuses entering those for grades (completely justified).

  2. I cannot sing, cannot really play any instrument and have no teaching experience, but even I could probably make my child pass a grade 1 exam. Seriously??? Three (easy) pieces, four basic scales, aural and some easy sight reading? Anything above grade 2 and I wouldn’t have a clue though.

I think some posters are a bit harsh on OP...
