Am I the only one surprised to hear that when it was put that there could be a second referendum the shouts of no overwhelmingly outweighed the yes’?

How else are we going to get out of this mess. Thankfully my MP wants the country to have another vote.

Bookridden · 12/03/2019 19:48

I think there is fear about what having a second referendum could do to our democracy and political system. I think the worry is that many people who voted for Brexit would feel betrayed, and these feelings could tip into something serious; even civil unrest perhaps.

They aren’t afraid about those who voted to remain feeling betrayed?

Bookridden · 12/03/2019 19:56

Well, yes, but I think the nature of our democratic decision means we have to honour the outcome of elections. Otherwise surely the whole system would collapse?

Boobiliboobiliboo · 12/03/2019 19:57

It wasn’t an election.

It was less legally binding than the X factor vote FFS

Nacknick · 12/03/2019 19:58

It wasn't an election....

Boobiliboobiliboo · 12/03/2019 19:58

And we don’t have direct democracy. We elect representatives to act in our best interests. No matter how much constituents say they want to be shot in the face, MPs aren’t duty bound to vote for it.

Bookridden · 12/03/2019 20:02

I think that the public would still expect the result to be honoured. It's a strange situation as referendums are so unusual, but I think that the fact it isn't legally binding/advisory-only isn't how many will interpret it; hence the risk to our parliamentary system I guess.

thewinkingprawn · 12/03/2019 20:02

I know the whole thing isn’t at all amusing but less legally binding than an X factor vote made me laugh! I think a second referendum would not bring about civil unrest - the first shit show certainly hasn’t. And it should.

Janleverton · 12/03/2019 20:03

I heard massive cheers for ref and some boos after the cheers - I’m sure that’s what I heard.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 12/03/2019 20:04

Democracy is voting every few year to check you are still happy. Leavers are worried that the majority of this country now want to remain. They are using typical bully boy tactics to get what they want.

I don’t really give a shit about folks of below average intelligence not understanding how their own country works, but I do when it impacts on my daughter’s future.

My dad said he would go on a march

Not in london you understand cos its a bit far and costs a lot

But to the nearest city

I love my dad Grin terribly british

PetuniaPetunia · 12/03/2019 20:08

What bully boy tactics ate they using?

Songsofexperience · 12/03/2019 20:15

many people who voted for Brexit would feel betrayed

How about those who didn't? And have been ignored? Are they not feeling betrayed? Especially if the other plan is utter catastrophe?

Songsofexperience · 12/03/2019 20:18

If there was another ref it should certainly be legally binding, even if no deal is an option and wins.

To be fair, even Nigel Farage can’t be arsed to show up for his own march, he’s just doing the beginning and the end, apparently. Marching is clearly hard work.

I fucking hate brexit. No deal will be horrible. I see people every day who are barely managing now, no deal will devastate them.

Figmentofmyimagination · 12/03/2019 20:21

I think they are probably afraid the whole social media dark web nastiness will start spiralling again and people will vote to leave again and then we really would be well and truly f**ked. That’s the only reason why I don’t want a second referendum. Give me a ‘rule-taking Norway-suck it up’ option over that any day.

Tbh, once we are back to our normal lives and have forgotten this period of temporary insanity, I doubt whether many people would even notice that we have less ‘control’ over our laws thanks to the Norway option than we used to. It’s not as if our MEPs actually voted very often. We can still hang around in the corridor.

User12879923378 · 12/03/2019 20:22

I don't understand why people say it's undemocratic to have another referendum nearly 3 years after the result.

We normally have a general election every 4-5 years, so obviously we don't work on the basis that it's undemocratic to check that everyone in the country still wants the same people in power as they did last time we asked. And Theresa May called a general election just two years after we'd had one. And if she'd lost the confidence vote a few months ago there'd have been another general election taking place another 2 years after the last one. I'm sorry, but this REFERENDUM MUST NEVER BE REVISITED stuff is just rubbish.

longwayoff · 12/03/2019 20:25

It wasn't an election. If it had been, given the amount of dirty dealing by Leave, the result would have been declared invalid and charges would be pending. I was unaware that democracy is maintained by one side threatening civil unrest if their demands aren't met. I think that goes by. a very different name.

Thesearmsofmine · 12/03/2019 20:26

I think some are happy enough to go out with a no deal, I have seen plenty of people thinking that it’s a great idea.

I think there is the worry there will be unrest if there is another referendum. I think if remain one then certain far right groups would have a field day.

Imissgmichael · 12/03/2019 20:26

Boobiliboobiliboo-

“I don’t really give a shit about folks of below average intelligence not understanding how their own country works, but I do when it impacts on my daughter’s future”

Is there any need for your type of bigotry. You know the type that thinks all leave voters aren’t bright.

Well right back at you. My sons doing ok, is your daughter failing. Bless.
