Grey decor

AIBU to hope this trend dies a death soon?

I'm house hunting at the moment and every other house is grey. Grey walls, grey kitchens, grey bathrooms.... bloody depressing.

Can someone please tell me it's starting to go out of fashion? It's the avocado bathroom suite for our times...

My entire house has white walls but I swear it looks warmer than all grey.

IndigoApple · 09/03/2019 16:22

Got a grey sofa in 2011 because we liked it, then painted walls grey and white. Accidentally fashionable! Now needing repainted and seems a bit dated/same as everyone else. What's new in colour schemes? It has made the room light and airy (was magnolia/natural hessian before) and hoping to keep the brightness.

slithytove · 09/03/2019 16:40

What about a pale blue or a light yellow?

Earthy autumn and jewel colours are the next big thing- much nicer!

I adore grey. My wardrobe is 100 shades of grey.

But my house is brilliant white all over; it feels clean, spacious, light and I can easily change the decor just with buying a new rug and throw.

Sofa is a lovely light grey - it just goes with everything! Grin

mummyhaschangedhername · 09/03/2019 16:49

I love grey and HATE magnolia. Each to their own.

flirtygirl · 09/03/2019 16:49

Magnolia is gross and should be banned, white or cream are better.
Grey is nice but not everywhere as that just shows a lack of imagination.

I have a metallic tile in my bathroom that looks like a dark shimmery copper grey pewter colour (depends on the light) and grey radiator, grey and white floor and I've teamed it with copper accessories.

That's enough grey for me, the rest of the house is white, hints of pink and navy and the girls have candy toned colours with a nod to its 50s heritage.

Sinead100 · 09/03/2019 16:50

Wow. What a snobby and sneery OP.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 09/03/2019 16:50

My bathroom, loo and kitchen were tiled entirely in beige (with horrible little brown flower motifs on occasional tiles) when I moved in 10 years ago. So far, I've redone the tiling in the kitchen and the loo (which is now the best room!) but the bathroom remains resolutely beige as I can't afford to redecorate it. Not sure if I think that beige is worse than grey or equally bad.

squeezysparklyballs · 09/03/2019 16:51

Snobby? Not liking grey is snobby? Is this relating to the class comments?

I like grey but the trend of every shade of light grey mixed with mirrored furniture and silver accessories is just too much- looks naff and instagram is full of it! I love seeing what people have done with colour!

noworklifebalance · 09/03/2019 16:56

Love grey but not grey and white as a combo, I find that too cold. Grey, navy, pink/copper and wood is lovely, IMO.

noworklifebalance · 09/03/2019 16:57

Grey with silver/mirrored accessories/furniture is also too cold for me

candlefloozy · 09/03/2019 16:57

I really like grey. But I do like brighter colours so haven't got any in my house. It is annoying when you go on Pinterest for ideas and everything is put woth grey though. But I think it can look quite classy.

IndigoApple · 09/03/2019 16:57

slithytove I really like the look of the light blue in that picture, with those frames (and keeping the grey sofa!).

WhiffofSnell · 09/03/2019 16:59

Taste is one of those things- like common sense - that we are all convinced we have 😁

WhiffofSnell · 09/03/2019 17:00

Wrong emoji Grin

Have you read through the whole article OP? Lots of the jewel colours and autumn hues are offset by grey walls!

I like having neutral walls but not dazzling like magnolia or white. Bright colours and jewel tones really stand out against grey. We have a dark grey sofa with jewel colour cushions, they sort of glow against the grey. Bright colours against white are less soothing.

I do like the modern Scandi style of dark earthy walls and dark florals, but you need big airy rooms and huge windows to avoid it looking gloomy. Most Scandinavian homes are built to make the most of the light, open plan with lots of glass.

thedisorganisedmum · 09/03/2019 17:13

why does it have to be magnolia or grey for some people? Grin There are alternatives you know!

The problem is, when EVERYBODY goes for something, grey for example, and even Argos sells grey furniture, it's no longer about taste, it's about blindly following a trend. People no longer chose what they like, they chose what they think will make them look tasteful.

Scattyhattie · 09/03/2019 17:16

I've few grey rooms, I find it warmer than white and works well with the strong colours I also like.

QuirkyQuark · 09/03/2019 17:18

This will be my next wall colour in the living room for us haven't told my husband yet but the grey fabric sofas and curtains will be staying.

disorganisedmum This is my bathroom- I don't think it's wannabe Essex. Being so snobbish renders you lacking in class.

I have an old house and it suits grey ( in proportion). The original radiators look fantastic in pewter ( and bronze).

VeryLittleOwl · 09/03/2019 17:40

I'm just about to start decorating an entire house (once the electricians and plumbers have finished) - this is my colour palette for it. Won't be using F&B though, despite the logos, the local paint shop will mix Johnstons Trade to the F&B colour chart and it's a close enough match for me, given it's £35 a 5l can instead of over £100!
