Grey decor

AIBU to hope this trend dies a death soon?

I'm house hunting at the moment and every other house is grey. Grey walls, grey kitchens, grey bathrooms.... bloody depressing.

Can someone please tell me it's starting to go out of fashion? It's the avocado bathroom suite for our times...

I am hoping Mrs H doesn't go for a grey Nursery. Grin

I wouldn’t be surprised if she does! I hope she has a ‘show one’ for her pictures and a real one

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 09/03/2019 17:50

I like grey too.

I’m so thankful we are out of the horrible ‘beige’ trend. Magnolia, taupe and pale brown.

It's nice. It's the exact same thing you see absolutely everywhere though, I am getting bored of seeing the same tiles in every house.

I am sure everybody has identical taste and chose this exact design by coincidence.

If you think you insult me by saying I have no class, you fail, I am as working class and common as much, and have no shame in it. I just don't need to pretend I am anything else Grin

ZaraW · 09/03/2019 18:16

TheEmoji you'll be pleased to know beige is back........www.livingetc.com/whats-news/colour-thats-trending-season-trend-colour-every-home-needs-197122

wildbhoysmama · 09/03/2019 18:51

disorhanisedmum also working class here, certainly not common in any way and confident enough to be who I am, not pretending to be anyone else. Loads of my house is quirky and very individual I just chose to have this bathroom because I like it.

Funnily enough, the fact that I chose these tiles 3 years ago when I hadn't seen anything like it now annoys the hell out of me when I see similar in every home magazine. It was the same with duck egg 17 years ago- I hunted and then paid too much for accessories then suddenly it was everywhere! My OH says it's a compliment, though.

You just came across as judgemental. Post a photo of your unique look then.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 09/03/2019 18:51

They look lovely! But they are cool colours.

I just hate that sandy beige neutral with a brown leather sofa and an oversized brown rose print canvas!

RainbowWaffles · 09/03/2019 18:55

Grey in an industrial or country chique kinda way used as a backdrop for some actual coloring is very appealing to look at. Ton sur ton grey is almost impossible to get right and anything with that crushed velvet or mirrored glass vibe is horrific. I think it’s the latter that is the trend and the former is a more classic look.

Linguaphile · 09/03/2019 19:26

I think grey is usually classed as a neutral by most colour experts, even if it is the current trendy —overdone— one. So in that sense it’s not the avocado of our time. Millennial pink, for example, was what I would say was the avocado of 2017/18.

I have a bit of very light grey on some walls my house (F&B Ammonite, which is quite warm) but it is warmed up and by oak floors, paintings on the walls, books on the bookshelf, plants, etc). I like it as an inoffensive backdrop as it’s less stark than white and not as blah as magnolia or beige. My open plan living/kitchen/dining space is too large for anything darker or more daring. It’s certainly not on every wall in the house though and not in the kitchen hard finishes.

My next door neighbor has done her house top to bottom in grey, and do I find that a bit overwhelming. Grey walls, grey flooring, grey door frames, grey cabinetry. It all feels a bit heavy and dark to me, so I definitely understand disliking grey in excess. (Though to be fair she seems very happy, so to each their own!)

Mrs Hinch’s house is depressingly lifeless and unimaginative. It looks like it was decorated by a 13 year old with an expense account at Next.

ilovecheese1 · 09/03/2019 19:27

YES OP!! Not only is everything Grey, everything is sparkly! 😩 my friend has just moved into a new build & the kitchen units & all doors are grey ffs. It is very Mrs hinch, who has gone absolutely grey bonkers. No personality at all!

ilovecheese1 · 09/03/2019 19:32

& anyone getting offended has an entire Grey house 🤣

HexagonalBattenburg · 09/03/2019 19:40

Most of my downstairs is grey (the internal walls of the conservatory are a lilac but the weather's so shite the view out of the windows is very grey this week) - I like it as a base colour to take very strong accent colours on top as it can take more of the strong colours I like than something like a cream base could do if that makes sense. Cream veers too much towards magnolia for my personal taste and after years of renting - fuck magnolia seriously. Our bedroom's a very very pale blue with a bright aqua, and the kids' room is the shade of purple that is only fully described in terms of purpleness with the words "my 6 year old picked it".

Least the trend now is flat grey painted walls - you can paint over them in an afternoon if you don't like it... I refer back to the horrors of artex, flock wallpaper, blown vinyl wallpaper and the horror of horror - woodchip with like 20 layers of paint over the top as much more terrible things to have to deal with in the bumper list of Interior Design Stuff You Personally Hate.

Actually I don’t understand this thread... why does it bother you / interest you how other people choose to decorate their homes? Just decorate yours however you wish and depending on what you like. People have different tastes.

burritofan · 09/03/2019 19:50

I love grey when it's like Anna Potter's house (and pic):

www.designsponge.com/2015/02/anna-potters-home.html

Mrs Hinch's, not so much. Someone on a Mrs H thread described it as like Next and Dunelm had a baby, which is exactly right.

thedisorganisedmum · 09/03/2019 19:59

People have different tastes
but that's the thing, when they ALL go for the same colour, it's not taste anymore.

It's just boring. You can't buy anything for your house without treading through oceans of grey. Baby clothes are grey. House doors are grey. In our dark and already grey country, it's even more depressing. It's hard to find something that is not bloody grey.

And if you had already some grey in your house, you need to change it or it looks like you want to live in the Next catalogue. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal, but it's very boring.

thedisorganisedmum · 09/03/2019 20:01

Boring boring and the same absolutely everywhere (and it's not even my taste)

I think a but of grey can look lovely but too much starts to be oppressive. We were put off some houses that took the grey thing too far as re-doing bathrooms and kitchens was just not going to happen budget wise. Bathrooms wouldn’t be so bad but I think sellers have to be careful about kitchens as they are so expensive to replace.

BlueMerchant · 09/03/2019 20:21

Grey looks great with the right statement colour. Mint, plum and countless others. Love it!!!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 09/03/2019 20:22

Just looked at Mrs Hinch on Instagram and agree her home looks so dreary and try hard. Don't like it.

I do love grey though and my house is done in grey, different shades and types of grey though and with colour too. Soft grey with plum in living room. Soft grey and turquois in dining room. Blue grey walls in kitchen. Green grey walls in bathroom. Greige bedroom with red. Light airy grey with lime green and stripey carpet in ds room. Slightly greyed white for hallway and stairs etc etc.

Great backdrop for proper art too. (Hate wall art, stupid words and glittery shit, crushed velvet, white furniture etc etc)

Magnolia is awful.

wildbhoysmama · 09/03/2019 20:25

disorganisedmum why is it not your taste? Is it rented? Have you inherited the boringness. I'm sure you've made it very cosy even if you don't like it.

I have a friend whose house looks like your pictures- not to my taste, but she loves it- sparkly wallpaper and all- and that's what matters.

burritofan · 09/03/2019 20:27

disorganisedmum I wouldn't say those pics are boring so much as fugly.

thedisorganisedmum · 09/03/2019 20:31

wildbhoysmama
that's not my house, I just got random pictures online Smile

My main issue with it is that you see the exact same decor everywhere. There's an amazing facebook group, diy on a budget official, where people are constantly asking for advice to recreate that look. The replies are fabulous.

I still haven't recovered from the poster who repainted her sofa to match her colour scheme

sighrollseyes · 09/03/2019 20:40

Just paint everything white (cheapest paint!), then have a feature wall in a colour or a wallpaper and add colour with your soft furnishings etc.

icarriedaturnip · 09/03/2019 20:43

I can’t stand it, I also can’t stand the crushed velvet furniture, I don’t see the appeal!

Hohofortherobbers · 09/03/2019 20:47

I had a grey bedroom as a teenager, with striped curtains/duvet black/red/white, I'm sure you remember them. This current trend reminds me of that, not in a cool vintage way either!! Off to google my old curtains.
