Grey decor

AIBU to hope this trend dies a death soon?

I'm house hunting at the moment and every other house is grey. Grey walls, grey kitchens, grey bathrooms.... bloody depressing.

Can someone please tell me it's starting to go out of fashion? It's the avocado bathroom suite for our times...

Oh I had a lovely yellow kitchen too. Oddly someone also suggested grey...

It's definitely going to date badly.

Just looked at Mrs Hinch’s house. Far too much grey. Not aspirational at all. Not for me anyway.

EmNetta · 09/03/2019 14:21

I've just gone back to Magnolia (bedroom), so there! No shades of yellow yet - I'm wondering if it's something to do with the light, as I can't remember any complaints about yellow when most people had Magnolia last time round. Mine looks more pinkish, and warm and cosy and altogether relaxing and familiar, so no regrets yet.

EdWinchester · 09/03/2019 14:21

Mrs Hinch's home is terribly naff. It looks like it's all from Next or Dunelm.

I do like grey though.

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2019 14:21

I am hoping Mrs H doesn't go for a grey Nursery.

PuddingsAreMyJam · 09/03/2019 14:22

Grey beats the MN obsession with duck egg blue.

Every time someone starts a MN thread asking for suggestions on what to paint their hallway/bedroom/living room, 80% of the suggestions will be duck egg fucking blue.

Grey in the way that Mrs Hinch has her house is looked down on by some as 'lower class' (not my words and not necessarily on this forum). On the other hand grey is fine if it's called elephant breath or some such from F&B.

ArtisanPopcorn · 09/03/2019 14:22

Just googled Mrs Hunch, genuinely thought they were B&W photos for a second. Very footballers wives.

Hadjab · 09/03/2019 14:24

Ha ha, I’m in B&Q buying grey paint for my bedroom right now. I’ve just had new double glazing put in, guess what, it’s grey, and the exterior of my house is about to be rendered grey. My car is grey too!
I LOVE GREY!!!

squeezysparklyballs · 09/03/2019 14:27

Oh dear, have I started a class war here?

My sitting room is magnolia, yellow and green. Fresh and light.

What class is that?

I love great and have grey and white in my living room and white for most other rooms. I had magnolia before with fucking cream carpets that showed every speck of dust! I now have darker grey carpets. Bathroom has silver grey tiles. Kitchen is not grey that would be too much! This is pretty much my kitchen which is just 3 years old

I'm so behind the latest trend that I'm hoping decorating fads swing and suddenly my home will be ahead of the trend Grin

Teaonthebedsheets · 09/03/2019 14:30

This country is too grey for me to have my interior decoration grey too. We have colour on the walls and it's lovely, always reminds me of a sunny day.

Hairynick · 09/03/2019 14:31

I know four different people with grey living rooms and a big multicoloured picture on the feature wall!!

squeezysparklyballs · 09/03/2019 14:32

Is that an animal print kitchen? Awesome!

OP posts:
Foxyloxy1plus1 · 09/03/2019 14:32

Well, you know, horses for courses. We can’t all like the same thing, that would be tedious.

Magnolia? Definitely landlord, can’t be bothered to think of anything else class. Grin

TatianaLarina · 09/03/2019 14:35

I hear ya OP. Grey only really works high end.

Mrs Hinch’s house is a case in point - absolutely unmitigatedly ghastly.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 09/03/2019 14:41

The problems with all these trends is when it's spread all over house, it's imported in.like the shabby chic look.

It's got to evolve naturally. A few grey bits, walls here and there... lovely but everything grey is distilled Kelly hoppen

Mrsmadevans · 09/03/2019 14:43

Who's Mrs Hinch ?
YANBU OP

SushiGo · 09/03/2019 14:43

I don't mind Grey in theory, but I hate any house that's the same colour scheme all the way through. It looks unnatural.

Grey kitchens do put me off, I'm sure it works in big industrial spaces.

It doesn't work in your average new build with tiny windows.

MarshaBradyo · 09/03/2019 14:44

So many trends look bad if they’re done in a blunt way ie I’d say that flat Hinch look is this

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2019 14:45

I explained upthread who she was Mrsmadevans. ^^

EntirelyAnonymised · 09/03/2019 14:46

Not all grey is cold. There are cool tones of grey (blue based) but there are also brown based tones which are warmer. Choosing the right tone is key, it’s the same with any colour. It depends on the orientation of the room you are using it in, the amount of natural light it gets, the ‘feel’ you want in there, what other colours or textures you’re having to work with (eg oak furniture or a pine floor). It looks ‘wrong’ and cold when the wrong shade has been used and/or it has been overused.

slithytove · 09/03/2019 14:46

We have

Grey and dark grey hall and cloakroom
Navy and white living room with accents of pink and silver
Off white dining room
Cream and oak kitchen
Purple and white bedroom
White bedroom
Yellow and white bedroom
Pale blue bedroom
Black, white and metallic bathrooms,

I love all our colours

Pk37 · 09/03/2019 14:47

All about taste !
You like magnolia , I despise it. Reminds me of my old council flat.
I love grey , you don’t .. oh well
