Grey decor

AIBU to hope this trend dies a death soon?

I'm house hunting at the moment and every other house is grey. Grey walls, grey kitchens, grey bathrooms.... bloody depressing.

Can someone please tell me it's starting to go out of fashion? It's the avocado bathroom suite for our times...

Just painted my bathroom grey 😁😁

Looks far better than the blue/green we had.

Barbarafromblackpool · 12/03/2019 08:15

Easy to paint over though.

CantBelieveMyLuck · 12/03/2019 08:18

It's weird as it 'can' look trendy, but at the same time, unless the room is filled with light, you're going to have a depressing dark room.

When buying a house the decor has always been discounted, as for £500/800 you can get a decorator in to fix what you don't like.

Byrytrain · 12/03/2019 08:24

I like grey, some of my rooms just hot painted grey, feels calm and neutral to me!

SileneOliveira · 12/03/2019 08:44

We've just put in a grey kitchen with black worksurfaces. However, we've also got a gorgeous handmade oak table and a brightly coloured glass splashback.

I like houses which show individuality. So many houses are like something directly out of the Next catalogue or copied from Instagram. Totally lacking in personality - whether it's white, grey, beige or magnolia. Everything matchy matchy is just so DULL.

JaneJeffer · 12/03/2019 09:33

Looking at Hinch House makes me feel weird.

Stargirl90 · 12/03/2019 10:01

I love grey! We are buying first house and I have plans for light grey carpets and grey walls , what's the other option? Cream/beige? Like my parents and grandparents homes 😐 grey with bright coloured cushions and maybe a feature wall 😊

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/03/2019 10:25

jacksonmaine I decorated mine in this way because every time I look at an ornament/vase/picture I just see another thing to dust.

I have always had white walls, my first house was bought in 1979 and I painted all the walls white and had parquet flooring everywhere.
My taste hasn’t changed and I don’t think that house now would look particularly dated.

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/03/2019 10:41

I also hate cutting in and find white walls and white ceilings are easier to paint

Mugglemom · 12/03/2019 11:10

I don't mind grey but I'm over grey and yellow together which seems to be way overused.

Musti · 12/03/2019 11:32

Most of us are followers of fashion and grey is what's been fashionable for a while. I quite like it but I have Scandinavian furniture, not crushed velvet and mirrors. Wooden furniture and lighting and warm rugs to add different natural textures and colours. So it looks more natural and peaceful.

sollyfromsurrey · 12/03/2019 13:42

thedisorganisedmum I don't think grey is boring.....no such thing as a boring colour anyway.

it's probably the fact that it's everywhere and every single show room has to be in grey nowadays.

I don't think it works well in our grim and grey country for a start, but that's a personal choice. Seeing the same decor everywhere because people think they have to chose grey to show taste , that's what makes it boring.

I don't even care what people chose to put in their house, I just want the grey trend to die so I can find something else in the shops!

newrubylane · 12/03/2019 13:52

"The only way to get ahead of the game is to pick something that is utterly out of fashion ... long cream shag-pile carpet."

... which I have just had put in our bedroom. It looks and feels amazing. Once I'd decided what i wanted there was basically just the one style and about 3 colours in it to choose from – compared to the eighty different variations of superspft grey polyprop I could have chosen from!

Wedgiecar58 · 12/03/2019 14:17

I like it, its so modern and neutral, it makes the white woodwork 'pop' and makes wooden flooring look really smart.

Agree its a bit dull, but thats kind of the point - not everyone wants snazzy patterned wallpapers etc.

Magnolia is bleurgh - reminds me of soul-less overpriced rented newbuilds with zero charactor.

caperplips · 12/03/2019 14:47

I like grey in some instances but with other colours. And never ever silvery crushed velvet or sequined stuff

Pinkiii · 12/03/2019 14:58

I like grey as a base, you can add any colour to the scheme but overall grey like hinch Isnt my taste at all, grey and crushed velvet Confused

viccat · 12/03/2019 15:06

When I bought this house, every room was magnolia, with horrible brown carpet everywhere. I've painted some rooms light grey and they look so much fresher and lighter than the horrible magnolia.

I also have grey stair carpet now and again it looks so much fresher and cleaner than any shade of beige.

reallyanotherone · 12/03/2019 15:13

I painted my bedroom grey when i was 22.

So far ahead of the trend Grin

At the time all i had were comments on “how awful”, depressing, going through my goth phase, cold, like concrete, etc.

Bet everyone of those people have grey walls now Grin

When i was house hunting a few years ago all the new builds were “show home grey”. Everything else was feature walls. All with the same 3 or 4 b&q wallpaper patterns- chocolate and teal for the living room, red and green in a bedroom...

I’ve just painted my living room orange. Be warned, in 20 years time it’ll be all the rage Grin

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 12/03/2019 15:17

Brown hasn't really been an in colour decor wise since the 1970s, when it seems like everything was brown or orange, so it will be interesting to see if that one makes a comeback with the masses or just with the type of people who grace the pages of Livingetc.

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 12/03/2019 15:19

@reallyanotherone orange walls makes me think of Changing Rooms. Laurence and Linda were mad for orange rooms and purple rooms. And Moroccan themes for some reason Grin.

LifeIsToughMate · 12/03/2019 15:23

I loooooove my grey house lol

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 12/03/2019 15:27

I've just had a look at Mrs Hinch's instagram page. I thought that was a filter on her photos, but no, it seems everything really is grey!

Youseethethingis · 12/03/2019 15:42

I’m also house hunting just now and amazed at the number of homes that are full on temples of grey and silver. I have some grey in my house, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not that drab military grey and it’s certainly not on every bloody surface Confused
In other news, my estate agent reports that avocado bathrooms are currently on their way back... Hmm
