Is it offensive or am I being silly?

Just a quick one but NC for this as I guess its outing.

My childrens school are doing world book day and the “theme” is peter pan, its given some suggestions of characters you can dress up as and one is tigerlilly. I was thinking of chosing that one for DD as I hate all of the tinkerbell dresses but ive heard its offensive to dress up as certain things. Native americans being on of them. Is it offensive or am I being silly? Why oh why do they have to do themes and not just let people pick their favourite book characters 😩

If you (hopefully) wouldn't dress your white child up as a black character from a book then why are Native Americans fair game? I'm a quarter Native American and wouldn't dress up as a stereotype of one for a costumed event.

Alsohuman · 07/03/2019 07:41

Let me be absolutely clear here - bloody hell I sound like Theresa May! My issue throughout this thread hasn’t been the Tiger Lily costume, its impact on Native Americans or any of the other examples that have been produced at various points.

What I have and always will take issue with is the patronising arrogance of the self righteous taking vicarious offence on behalf of another race or culture. Then, when presented with an example of how badly that can misfire, the Jew accused by people like all of you of anti Semitism is written off as an idiot.

No I wouldn’t dress a child as Tiger Lily, Little Black Sambo or any other racial stereotype but neither would I have the temerity to assume I had the right to hammer my opinion home, totally ignoring or dismissing anything that’s inconvenient.

SparkiePolastri · 07/03/2019 07:49

but neither would I have the temerity to assume I had the right to hammer my opinion home, totally ignoring or dismissing anything that’s inconvenient.

Oh, the humanity. 😂

And please stop citing your golliwog figurine friend as some kind of counter argument. It's embarrassing.

Alsohuman · 07/03/2019 07:51

You mean it’s inconvenient. Yes, I see that.

SparkiePolastri · 07/03/2019 07:53

No, it's not inconvenient. It's embarrassing - for you.

The picture on Coren's wall would probably have done nothing more than raise an eyebrow had it not been for the fact that he ALSO had golliwogs on display.

Please stop using as some sort of 'drop the mike' argument. It's not.

BertrandRussell · 07/03/2019 07:56

“Then, when presented with an example of how badly that can misfire, the Jew accused by people like all of you of anti Semitism is written off as an idiot.“

The thing you refuse to look at in the example you gave was that the person who made the complaint did not know that his Air BnB was owned by a Jewish person. He saw an image that appeared anti Semitic and ornaments that are racist, and drew the obvious conclusion. And Coren, instead of saying “oh yes, that must have looked a bit dodgy” wrote a “gotcha” piece. I mean, even the most “it’s PC gone mad” amongst us, if we knew Coren would have said “Hey, Giles-might it be a good idea to put the gollywogs away before the next guest arrives? Not good optics, man”

Pumperthepumper · 07/03/2019 07:58

neither would I have the temerity to assume I had the right to hammer my opinion home, totally ignoring or dismissing anything that’s inconvenient.

And yet you’re still hammering on about Giles Coren?! The man dispays his gollywog collection in his air B&B! Are you honestly saying you wouldn’t be slightly concerned if you walked into that? You wouldn’t raise concerns about apparent anti-semitism and racism when faced with a picture (caricature or cartoon, can’t remember what we agreed on) and a gollywog collection? Or is that too inconvenient for you when you’re so desperate to pin so much on one example of someone who was wrong?

Alsohuman · 07/03/2019 07:59

See, there you go again. It’s not embarrassing in the slightest for me. I’m not in the least embarrassed to point out how your arrogance can backfire on you.

SparkiePolastri · 07/03/2019 08:02

I'll let you digest Bertrand and Pumper's posts.

Your Coren example is embarrassing. Even more so because you just can't understand why.

Alsohuman · 07/03/2019 08:08

How very kind of you. I think i’m right in saying it’s only embarrassing if I feel embarrassment. Once again, you’re taking it upon yourself to assert on someone else’s behalf. Continued refusal to confront that issue can only lead me to think you have no answer.

Pumperthepumper · 07/03/2019 08:18

I think i’m right in saying it’s only embarrassing if I feel embarrassment.

I’m not sure about this - you can feel embarrassed on someone else’s behalf, and I think there’s probably a few of us on this thread who are embarrassed for you, and your inability to see why the Giles Coren example isn’t a straightforward case of wrongful accusation. Again, would you be totally fine walking in to an airbnb (not knowing the person who owns it), seeing the caricature and the gollywogs and thinking ‘this is totally fine, no concerns here’?

SparkiePolastri · 07/03/2019 08:19

Its also embarrassing if other people are embarrassed for you.

I suggest you stop trotting your Golliwog-wielding friend out.

Or not, if you'd prefer to continue to embarrass yourself. Up to you entirely.

Alsohuman · 07/03/2019 08:29

Still attacking me and not addressing the issue I raised. The only conclusion can be that none of you has an answer. Incidentally I have a skin like a rhino so the insults are entirely pointless.

Pumperthepumper · 07/03/2019 08:34

What issue? What’s your question?

Alsohuman · 07/03/2019 08:39

I stated it quite clearly several posts back. You were obviously all too busy being embarrassed for me and prattling about golliwogs to bother reading it.

You'll need to clarify your 'issue', Also.

I suspect it's her mate with the Golliwogs, Giles. But can't be sure.

BertrandRussell · 07/03/2019 08:46

I’ve read every word you’ve written- and I thought I had addressed all the points you’ve made. Can you remind me?

Alsohuman · 07/03/2019 08:46

I posted at 07.41. You really are unhealthily fixated on those golliwogs.

Pumperthepumper · 07/03/2019 08:48

Still don’t understand which point you’ve put forward that hasn’t been adressed. I don’t think you do either though.

BertrandRussell · 07/03/2019 08:48

Oh, I didn’t realise that was a point to be answered-I thought it was just gratuitous insults!

Alsohuman · 07/03/2019 08:51

Of course you did.

SparkiePolastri · 07/03/2019 08:54

I'm not in the UK, so 07.41 means nothing to me.

Anyone any the wiser as to the elusive 'issue'.

Also, why won't Also answer Pumper's quite reasonable question?

Alsohuman · 07/03/2019 09:03

The posts are timed. Did you not notice? Or did those pesky golliwogs get in the way?
