To think this site is really basic?

As in...I can't just go to the search box and put in a subject and find it in past discussions?

It takes you to a google search! I know I could probably do an advanced search but it's a bit old-fashioned isn't it? The way this place works is so ...2000!

On Reddit, if you put something in the search box it immediately asks you if you want to search the subreddit you're on or the whole site...we should have that here. I know I could post this in site stuff but wanted some more answers than I'll get there.

That's why we love Mumsnet. It works well for discussions in the present.

KnockMeDown · 05/02/2019 06:10

I have a search function ConfusedHmm

SillyMoomin · 05/02/2019 06:14

You’re using the wrong search button

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 05/02/2019 06:15

That's why Advanced Search is there. You can do all sorts of clever stuff. Search a user name, see how long someone's been around in case you think they're a goady fucker namechanged to throw a touchpaper in. Etc etc.

Ansumpasty · 05/02/2019 06:18

I thought you were using the American ‘basic,’ as in, ‘oh my God, you are so basic’ haha

Squeegle · 05/02/2019 06:21

Are you on a mobile, just go to search at the bottom. If not use advanced search. Maybe you need to be logged in?

Flashinggreen · 05/02/2019 06:22

I’ve never managed to use the advanced search to find things other than posters previous threads. But I just don’t use it.

Oblomov19 · 05/02/2019 07:04

I find the search functions really poor, whether I'm on my phone, or log in at work and use advanced. Both archaic.

IVEgottheDECAF · 05/02/2019 07:06

Basic bitch

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 05/02/2019 07:15

Advanced Search works for that. But also, site etiquette dictates that people start new threads on topics instead of resurrecting old ones (known as 'zombie threads'.

MRex · 05/02/2019 07:17

YANBU, it's a very old fashioned style that hasn't been updated with new technology features. The adverts are clunky too.

Balloondog · 05/02/2019 07:27

YANBU! The site is clunky, search functions are poor and -my pet peeve - not being able to use private messaging on the mobile site is just ridiculous.

Boom76 · 05/02/2019 07:31

I agree but users hate change and moan about the slightest change to the site so there’s no way they’ll modernise it

SoupDragon · 05/02/2019 07:32

not being able to use private messaging on the mobile site is just ridiculous.

You can send a PM on the mobile site Confused

Variousartists · 05/02/2019 07:33

I know what you mean. The advanced search is a pain.

LEMtheoriginal · 05/02/2019 07:36

I'm old - basic works for me!!

Net mums is all fancy if you prefer embellishment

LunafortJest · 05/02/2019 07:38

There needs to be an edit function.

MarthasGinYard · 05/02/2019 07:39

You can search

But I love the fact MN is a bit prehistoric

Like me Smile

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2019 07:39

I can never understand why people want to make MN exactly like every other site.

Advanced search is fine.

Is is time for a 'Can we have a Like button' thread again? Hmm

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 05/02/2019 07:40

Yes, the design is rather outdated - but it all pretty much works. My one change request would be for a wider range of emojis. It would certainly help everyone if we had ones for LTB, CF, WTF and Neighbour Parking Rage. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2019 07:42

Or sparkly tickers, that would be good! Grin

Balloondog · 05/02/2019 07:43

@SoupDragon Thanks for the heads up, I don't know what I'm missing - I have never been able to work out how to read a pm sent to me when on my phone. Is it an iPhone thing?

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 05/02/2019 07:48

An edit button wouldn't work unless the edit was visible and highlighted otherwise people could change their post completely which would make some of the replies sound like nonsense or it could be used to cause arguments

Flashinggreen · 05/02/2019 07:49

I’m so stuck in my ways I use the desk top site when on my mobile, don’t like the mobile one...

WannabeMathematician · 05/02/2019 07:49

Slight side note but I would love it if on the mobile site the OP's posts in a thread we're highlighted some how so you don't miss their replies!
