To think this site is really basic?

As in...I can't just go to the search box and put in a subject and find it in past discussions?

It takes you to a google search! I know I could probably do an advanced search but it's a bit old-fashioned isn't it? The way this place works is so ...2000!

On Reddit, if you put something in the search box it immediately asks you if you want to search the subreddit you're on or the whole site...we should have that here. I know I could post this in site stuff but wanted some more answers than I'll get there.

You have to cut and paste though to quote a post.

nauticant · 05/02/2019 11:49

Which is ideal* because I rarely want to quote the entirety of someone's posts so whatever I'm doing I'm going to be editing. In my experience a ready quote functionality leads to long screeds of quotes and quotes within quotes.

  • for me, and that's what much of this about isn't it, personal preference
SoupDragon · 05/02/2019 11:51

The fact that so many people have such vastly differing experiences of the site show that it's a mess.

Or that people want different things.

SoupDragon · 05/02/2019 11:52

You have to cut and paste though to quote a post.

But that isn't dissimilar to other sites I've been on where it's easy to quote an entire post but not if you only want a bit of it.

Cleffa · 05/02/2019 11:52

I like how basic and straightforward Mumsnet is - so easy to read and use without fucking tickers and sparkles and all sorts of crap between every post.

I find the search function works just fine if you use it properly, I've been able to search and find threads from years ago using keywords and I'm not the most tech- savvy.

Like buttons etc. belong on facebook. It would be nice if bookmarked threads were automatically put on the "I'm Watching" list too, but other than that I wouldn't change much.

FortunesFave · 05/02/2019 11:53

soup no, I mean differing experiences regarding how well things work...or not.

MarshaBradyo · 05/02/2019 11:53

I like the basic part but yes searching for a specific post is too time consuming, now that you have to scroll a whole thread

Eliza9917 · 05/02/2019 11:56

It needs an edit button, and a quote button imo.

And buttons at the top of each thread that 'show all OP's posts' and 'show all my posts'.

It needs to automatically take you to where you were in the thread too, mine doesn't always do that.

JacquesHammer · 05/02/2019 11:57

I love the idea that if some parts of the site aren’t working for some people it’s basically because their thick and not doing it properly rather than issues with functionality Grin

FortunesFave · 05/02/2019 11:57

Eliza and a better search function.

*they’re. Freudian autocorrect!

Bumblebee39 · 05/02/2019 11:59

I love MN for ease of use
The Mobile Ap just works
It doesn't do anything clever, and it doesn't have loads of the glitches you get on other sites
I'm never sat for ages waiting for things to load
I can use it on old and new phones.
I don't bother google People’s names. Life is short. I take threads on face value.

SoupDragon · 05/02/2019 12:00

I mean differing experiences regarding how well things work...or not.

Many appear to be "user error"

ShartGoblin · 05/02/2019 12:01

*they're thick

Sorry! I normally don't want to be that arsehole but it was just such a perfect opportunity Grin

ShartGoblin · 05/02/2019 12:02

Urgh crosspost! OK that's another feature we need - threads "live updating" as you type a reply!!!!

JacquesHammer · 05/02/2019 12:02

Sorry! I normally don't want to be that arsehole but it was just such a perfect opportunity grin

Sadly for you I had already pointed it out Grin

JacquesHammer · 05/02/2019 12:02

This gets better and better Grin

nauticant · 05/02/2019 12:02

Hahaha at ShartGoblin.

marymarkle · 05/02/2019 12:08

I don't think though there will be any major changes to this site. That costs money and the site seems to be getting less busy, so it would not be worth the investment. It makes more sense to do ad hoc updates as they are needed,

surferjet · 05/02/2019 12:10

2 minute edit function and hide poster option would really be an improvement

NunoGoncalves · 05/02/2019 12:12

A quote button that would just automatically copy the quoted post into the reply box with asterixes either end would be good. Then you could still delete part of the text if you wanted to quote just a specific part. That would be SUPER easy for the developers to implement and would save everyone a little bit of time. It could also include "Originally posted by [username]" at the top so people could tell who was being quoted.

MarshaBradyo · 05/02/2019 12:16

So much more repetitive text I much prefer just bolding the name

Pinkcottonshirt · 05/02/2019 12:25

There is! You just bookmark it.

How?? When I try this, Watching just takes me to the bottom of the thread, just the same way as I didn’t use a bookmark!

ChesterGreySideboard · 05/02/2019 12:42

I hate nested replies. It makes the conversation so fragmented.

I’m guessing some of the people complaining don’t remember the last time the mobile site was changed and the flouncing that happened as a result.

Faultymain5 · 05/02/2019 12:49

I hate nested replies. It makes the conversation so fragmented.

I disagree, I find that when things go off on tangents, people can still come in and answer the query. Sometimes the original point of the question gets lost in the replies otherwise.
