To think this site is really basic?

As in...I can't just go to the search box and put in a subject and find it in past discussions?

It takes you to a google search! I know I could probably do an advanced search but it's a bit old-fashioned isn't it? The way this place works is so ...2000!

On Reddit, if you put something in the search box it immediately asks you if you want to search the subreddit you're on or the whole site...we should have that here. I know I could post this in site stuff but wanted some more answers than I'll get there.

OP posts:

I like MN because it doesn't have an edit button. No rewriting history.
I find that irritatingly leaves about 10% of posts, telling people how crap their grammar is, or correcting your own.

Not necessarily rewriting history, but more correcting a typo.

Pinkcottonshirt · 05/02/2019 08:35

There is Pink. There's a bookmark function.

I know how to add a bookmark, how do you find all of your bookmarks?

Faultymain5 · 05/02/2019 08:35

JacquesHammer careful now, they're so welcoming and accommodating, they'll tell you what you can do if it's not "working" for you.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 05/02/2019 08:35

I had a brief foray onto Reddit. Couldn't get used to it and the upvoting and downvoting just caused silly amounts of bickering.

I find Mumsnet refreshingly simple although I do hate the way advanced search works. I often look for old posts/threads of my own and AS will find the thread for me, but not take me to the specific post I'm looking for with the keyword in it. In a 1000 post thread that's really tedious.

NiktheGreek · 05/02/2019 08:35

There's no need for an edit function, there's a preview function. Does the same job.

Faultymain5 · 05/02/2019 08:37

@Pink, Watch this thread
I have to click on Bookmark and Watch this thread, then go to watching (not threads you're on)

So about two clicks when you need to remember and another click to find where you were. HTH

WatcherOfTheNight · 05/02/2019 08:37

Slow ? clunky ? Can't say I've noticed that.

Is this a flounce ?

marymarkle · 05/02/2019 08:38

You do know some sites have an edit function, plus an ability to see what has been edited. It means posters can not rewrite history, but it means you can edit typos etc.
And who actually uses preview? There are certainly enough typos with people posting another comment to clarify, that it looks like lots of people don't.

ALemonyPea · 05/02/2019 08:38

Yet you still post here...

Faultymain5 · 05/02/2019 08:39

@NiktheGreek unless you are in search of advice and are going so quickly that even when you press the preview function you miss it. I mean I see typos at work from people who have proofread their work, this is an internet forum.

Or you don't use the preview function with one sentence, but you make a typo and would like to change it.

JacquesHammer · 05/02/2019 08:41

Slow ? clunky ? Can't say I've noticed that

I build websites. It’s slow and clunky Smile

Is this a flounce?

What a bizarre comment. It’s an opinion.

WatcherOfTheNight · 05/02/2019 08:43

@JacquesHammer I'm not into tech which is probably why it suits me .

Bizarre? No it was a simple question Smile

LEMtheoriginal · 05/02/2019 08:45

@sparklinbrook is thebookmark thing still going? I used to have it and cant find it again

WatcherOfTheNight · 05/02/2019 08:45

And Op hasn't returned, prompting my asking.

bsc · 05/02/2019 08:46

I use preview if I write something long... because I'm sick of losing a huge long post to my lousy mobile signal.

JacquesHammer · 05/02/2019 08:46

And Op hasn't returned, prompting my asking

Ah I see. I though you were asking me given you were using my words!

Apologies

LEMtheoriginal · 05/02/2019 08:46

Watcher - maybe it was Justinemumsnet got out the wrong side of bed!

LEMtheoriginal · 05/02/2019 08:47

Ohhh found it - most useful

NigellasGuest · 05/02/2019 08:48

Im very happy with the site. I would hate an edit button. If you're that bothered about typos and grammar then double check before posting. My phone made me post that I apply my foundation with my tigers, should have read fingers, on the S&B board. No I hadn't proof read my post but it made some people laugh.
Not having an edit button means you can see when posters are backtracking. Makes it more like a real life discussion. Except for the tigers!

EngagedAgain · 05/02/2019 08:50

Slight derail, but how do you do bold using mobile phone? When I post there's at the bottom a bold, strike through, underline and italic symbols, yet I can't seem to get them to work. The bold just creates a star. Tia

ItsMEhooray · 05/02/2019 08:51

Please do not change MN, We don't want avatars, signatures, post counts, rep systems, I actually like that it's not easy to search for old threads, please don't change MN Sad I came here with they changed Digital Spy for the worst, tried to go back their for TV discussions but couldn't cope with how crap their forums are now.

Pinkcottonshirt · 05/02/2019 08:53

Faultymain5

I have tried that, but Watching still just takes me to at most he last four posts, not to my bookmark.

QuaterMiss · 05/02/2019 08:54

There must be something wrong with me- I find this site wondrously simple to navigate and customise! (As long as there are no glitches, like the current incapacity if the Preview button on the mobile site.)

Slight side note but I would love it if on the mobile site the OP's posts in a thread were highlighted some how so you don't miss their replies!

Confused

Well, of course you can!

I use the mobile site almost exclusively. Bookmarks work. Advanced search works. PMs work.

And I don't want anything done that encourages me to spend even more time here ...

WatcherOfTheNight · 05/02/2019 08:55

No problem @JacquesHammer ,no need for apologies , I should've been clearer .

I liked it when they used to tell you how many posts had been written since the last time you logged on.
