To think this site is really basic?

As in...I can't just go to the search box and put in a subject and find it in past discussions?

It takes you to a google search! I know I could probably do an advanced search but it's a bit old-fashioned isn't it? The way this place works is so ...2000!

On Reddit, if you put something in the search box it immediately asks you if you want to search the subreddit you're on or the whole site...we should have that here. I know I could post this in site stuff but wanted some more answers than I'll get there.

I don't the MN functionality should change.

Other sites are available if you want sleeker/flashier/more glittery

bsc · 05/02/2019 07:49

Pm works perfectly fine on mobile site Confused

NCjustforthisthread · 05/02/2019 07:51

Errrmm I think you can advance search. And the reading of a private message isn’t an iPhone thing - I think it just goes into your inbox. Maybe you just don’t know how to use the site properly? 😂

SoupDragon · 05/02/2019 07:53

Do you mean mobile site or app?

labazsisgoingmad · 05/02/2019 07:53

please keep mn as it is i dont want to search so it doesnt bother me what does is its such an easy site to partake in not complicated for non techy people but with bits for those who like to fiddle about no if it aint broke dont try and fix it

SoupDragon · 05/02/2019 07:55

On both your inbox is under "my Mumsnet" which is on the menu that pops up when you click the top right 3 horizontal lines on the app and just top right on the mobile site.

Lunaballoon · 05/02/2019 07:58

Yanbu about the search function. I use an IPad for Mumnetting and it’s very clunky!

Jaxtellerswife · 05/02/2019 07:58

No, it's the app you can't message on. It is really annoying as it would be quite a basic thing to be able to do

JacquesHammer · 05/02/2019 08:00

It’s totally archaic.

Basic in terms of functionality at best.

LEMtheoriginal · 05/02/2019 08:01

Wannabe - you can do that. You have to go to customise. I think. It works on my android.

LEMtheoriginal · 05/02/2019 08:04

Wannabe- the option doesnt appear on the mobile site cystomise but if you switch to desktop its there - highlight it and it stays for the mobile site.

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2019 08:05

It's a good thing there's hundreds of other websites that might meet your standards,

Stick with ones you like.

BIWI · 05/02/2019 08:08

I'm struggling to see your problem actually. The search box is on exactly the same page as Advanced Search - so you're getting two different options not just one. How does this make Mumsnet basic?

But you know what they say, if you don't like it ...

ClosdesMouches · 05/02/2019 08:12

YANBU. It's clunky and glitchy. It's another reason that I spend much less time here than I did previiusly.

As for AS, it was pointed out to HQ over a year ago that it doesn't work well for some users. I've been on the site for around 12 years now, AS worked fine on my old account, but in the couple of years I've been using this account it's been crap. Nothing has been done about it.

marymarkle · 05/02/2019 08:17

I agree functionality is basic. On my phone it keeps asking me to accept the privacy statement about every 5 refreshes. Very irritating. And it must be the only forum on the internet not to have an edit button.

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2019 08:18

I like MN because it doesn't have an edit button. No rewriting history.

Pinkcottonshirt · 05/02/2019 08:25

I wish there was a way of returning to a thread at the last post you Read.

DoJo · 05/02/2019 08:26

Advanced Search works for that. But also, site etiquette dictates that people start new threads on topics instead of resurrecting old ones (known as 'zombie threads'.

But there are plenty of reasons you might want to read a thread without contributing to it.

Faultymain5 · 05/02/2019 08:27

I agree with you OP. I don't come often and usually only use it for when I want something (which is hardly community spirited).

I think there, at the very least, should be an edit function.

I find it odd that people who say, if you don't like it...... simply because, keeping things the way they are will eventually die out and is not very inclusive.

The advanced function doesn't work well (when I forget to watch a thread (even though it's bookmarked ), the thread often cannot be found by the advanced function even though I've put in key words from the title. Maybe it is user error, but have you ever wondered why Apple products are so popular? Because it's easy, user friendly, intuitive, quite frankly all the things MN is not. (I'm an Android user, and cannot stand Apple, so no bias).

That said it's useful, so I will still visit, but mostly for my own selfish ends rather than to be useful to others, which is a shame. I first tried to come in 2002 after my DS, but was on another site that was threaded and easier to use. I came back again when my DD was born, but really didn't get on with it. Then came GCSEs and i needed to ask questions.

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2019 08:27

There is Pink. There's a bookmark function.

WatcherOfTheNight · 05/02/2019 08:28

You don't like it but your still here ...there must be something about it hey op.

Anyhoo,as pp have pointed out, there are so many other sites about if you'd prefer something more modern. Variety is the spice of life so they say Grin

JacquesHammer · 05/02/2019 08:29

if you'd prefer something more modern

It isn’t a modernity thing. It’s a working properly given the amount they must take in ad revenue thing.

It’s not hard to make a site that works.

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2019 08:30

But the site works for the vast majority.

Faultymain5 · 05/02/2019 08:30

Oh and using the advanced function to see if someone is a troll is one thing, using it (like a certain JamesTKirk'sToupee), to try to bully or shame people, when they haven't taken the advice given previously, or just to shame people in general, is a sh*t use of it.

JacquesHammer · 05/02/2019 08:33

But the site works for the vast majority

“Works” is a subjective term. Slow, clunky and adding features where there’s clearly an issue isn’t working for me!
