But for every reason! We all have a song that just gets to you, mine is Joni Mitchell's 'Both sides now' m.youtube.com/watch?v=aCnf46boC3I
So bitter sweet, reminds me of really sad times and really, really happy times too. What are your bitter sweet songs?

Patience by Take That...I’m welling up just writing it. It came out around the time that we were waiting on the results of our IVF. After a number of years of infertility, and two miscarriages following clomid treatment, we went for IVF. It was as if ‘Patience’ was a sign we just needed to wait and things would turn out ok. Amazingly, everything went well and we have a fantastic 11 year old son (who also has a little sister too). It still makes me cry when I hear it, though.
I also agree with the pp who said the Intermezzo from Cavelleria Rusticana; also the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde by Wagner.

cheesenpickles · 19/01/2019 00:11

@hatethinkingofusernames it just gets me right in the feels. Happy Ending is another one as well (though I moved over my teen love to that one so has more context).

Eatmycheese · 19/01/2019 00:11

Oh and The Beatles, The Long and Winding Road which I chose to play for my Father's funeral

cheesenpickles · 19/01/2019 00:13

And I think There She Goes is the single most beautiful song in the world @hatethinkingofusernames. It gives me chills and makes me want to sob my heart out. It's the song I hope my husband hears and makes him think about me (if that makes sense).

Though it's probably about heroin. Lol

BabyPigeon83 · 19/01/2019 00:16

"What Sarah said" by Death Cab for Cutie.
I fall apart at "love is watching someone die...so who's gonna watch you die?...

OneStepOneStumble · 19/01/2019 00:22

Hear you me - Jimmy Eat World.

"A song for a heart so big, god wouldn't let it live" 😢 and I'm not even religious!

Hisnamesblaine · 19/01/2019 00:22

Kate Bush a woman's work

quince2figs · 19/01/2019 00:23

Crikey, loads of songs set me off

This Woman’s Work - Kate Bush
Another vote for Hurt - Johnny Cash
most Carpenters songs - esp Goodbye to love. Just reminds me of being a child in the 70’s and my late dad loved Karen’s voice. Miss my dad so much, and her story was so sad.
Dolly Parton - I will Always Love You (nb: NOT the Whitney cover)
Queen - These are the Days of our Lives

MrsCatE · 19/01/2019 00:27

'Without you (can't live)' Harry Nilsson version only.

Also 'Hurt' love original Johnny Cash but prefer Nine Inch Nails 'robust' version / tribute!

quince2figs · 19/01/2019 00:28

Cross post, hisnamesblaine !

Boohooyouho · 19/01/2019 00:34

Magic by Ben folds five makes me bawl so much I can’t even listen to it. But then I first heard it not long after my grandmother died following a long period in hospital after several strokes.

Sugarformyhoney · 19/01/2019 00:39

Headlights by Eminem hits me right in the feels

tumpymummy · 19/01/2019 00:43

Endless Love - used to make me cry as a teenager so still gets me emotional.

gentlyscented · 19/01/2019 00:44

Do-heaven
Micheal Bolton how am I supposed to live without you ( was played at my nans funeral 😭)

Tony2 · 19/01/2019 00:47

Beim Schlafengehen sung by Renee Fleming. Senza Mamma by Janis Kelly. Casta Diva, Maria Callas. Una Furtiva Lagrima, Tito Schipa. And of course, The Show must go on.

PurpleFlower1983 · 19/01/2019 01:00

Feed The Birds from Mary Poppins
Kissing You - Des’ree

Corrag · 19/01/2019 01:16

This Woman's Work by Kate Bush has me sobbing before she's even started singing. That noise she makes at the beginning, I don't know what to call it, it's like a cross between a sob and a wail.

RecentlyDeLurked · 19/01/2019 01:17

I can't make you love me, George Michael's version

Aquamarine1029 · 19/01/2019 01:35

So Long, Goodbye by 10 Years. It kills me.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 19/01/2019 01:37

most Carpenters songs

Oh, yes. We've Only Just Begun always has me blubbing.

I completely agree with you about Karen's voice - she also seemed to have a really sweet, almost childlike sense of wonder and excitement (in stark contrast to the horrendous reality of what she was going through IRL).

I can't remember which song it was, but they did a video at the behest of their management/record label filmed at a theme park. Karen was grinning and thrilling to it all like a little child whilst Richard just sat there stony-faced and embarrassed!

Tony2 · 19/01/2019 01:40

George Michaels version of They Won't go When I Go. But always Placebo, Without You I'm Nothing. You're slipping slowly from my reach.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 19/01/2019 01:46

In keeping with the technical specifications given in the thread title ("makes you cry for NO reason", about which a PP berated clarified to us all), another one for me is the song I Am From Austria by Rainhard Fendrich and later re-recorded by him and two fellow Austrian musicians as "Austria 3" (must have taken them ages to come up with that group name).

It's a very moving song about the sheer pride and joy of being Austrian, touching on its great and not-quite-so-great parts. It always gets me right there as I proudly sing along.

I lived there for a while many years ago, but I am not and never have actually been Austrian.

quince2figs · 19/01/2019 01:50

Exactly, buffet. Your username’s source in contrast one my happiest songs, and the dcs!

I worked abroad for a few weeks as a student. Almost the only English I could access was The Carpenters story on an American cable TV channel, so watched this far too many times. The awful irony of innocent looking Karen singing about true love and mostly such happy songs. Her voice was so true.
(also it’s the right pitch for me to sing along to which is unusual)
