Well the government have succeeded in one thing; making the uk a hostile place to live for most people what with cuts. Brexit etc. Is it just me or do things feel... tense?

Not really?

I think non natives definitely have it worse, but I've also been sorely tempted to move to Scotland. Their leadership is far closer to where I thought we would be; almost modelling on scandi countries with free uni and prescriptions. The UK just depresses the hell out of me on a daily basis. It's like the 80s, 90s and 00s never happened down here.

We pay more tax in Scotland. @maryjoyce - sorry but you are literally clueless.

KC225 · 09/01/2019 04:13

I moved from London to Sweden four years ago. There are prescription charges here - last one was 50 quid 15 for a GP appointment and 35 for antibiotics. My DH is 50 and Swedish and we are still paying off his student loan. So clearly you are not talking the largest populated country in Scandinavia.

In what way HelenaDove?

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 09/01/2019 05:23

Rafa more tax? How? Genuine question, no agenda. I just didn’t realise this.

Racecardriver · 09/01/2019 06:10

I haven’t noticed. Beyond increased threat of terrorism and London becoming/seeming even more crowded I can’t say much had changed since I moved here.

Racecardriver · 09/01/2019 06:10

@kristyallsopstwin DHs tax bill was huge last year. Self employed. Income from dividends as well.

Nonomore3 · 09/01/2019 06:18

I can feel the effects of the rising crime rates. I have seen some horrific things whilst being out and about in london and know more and more people who have been mugged etc .

MrsMWA · 09/01/2019 06:26

YABVU OP have you ever lived in another country? I have and believe me, the UK is paradise. Are you aware of how the most populous country in the world is governed? Maybe a few months in Weinan might make you see how easy we have it.

SilkenTofu · 09/01/2019 06:40

I disagree. I have lived in 4 other countries and IMO the UK is the worst. We pay the most tax here and receive very little back in terms of services and the crime here is out of control.

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 09/01/2019 07:19

Good grief, why have all scopes posts been deleted?

What the fuck is it coming to when you can’t have political free speech on MN? What talk guidelines were broken there exactly? I can’t remember the exact content of the posts but they didn’t strike me as anything totally beyond the pale when I read them.

Racecar your post re your DHs tax bill is a bit meaningless. ‘Huge’ is both relative and subjective and it tells me nothing without knowing your DHs earnings and how the tax rates differ in Scotland from England, which is what I asked.

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 09/01/2019 07:21

I spent some time in central London a few months ago for the first time in years and it felt very different to how I remembered. Much more hostile and edgy. I wasn’t in particularly rough or disadvantaged areas either.

malificent7 · 09/01/2019 07:22

So many deleted posts that i read yet! I lived and worked in developing countries such as Nepal and of course it was harder there for the locals. I saw the real suffering in Bangladesh.
I'm all for setting the bar high though! It's not a race to the bottom.

OP posts:
DelphiniumBlue · 09/01/2019 07:32

Yes, it feels very hostile
It feels as if government departments are continually trying to trip people up, the callousness of the way U universal Credit is delivered is just awful. Public services are being hives off and run for private profit, conditions on trains are just awful, utilities providers deliberately make their statements inintelligble, as do HMRC and there is no consistency, no comeback. The message coming across is that you are on your own .

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 09/01/2019 08:04

Yes i agree

It feels tense...like everything is about to kick off

misshalo · 09/01/2019 08:10

The uk is a very welcoming country
compare to different countries in the world
You have obviously not lived in many different countries to even think like that

Kerberos · 09/01/2019 08:11

Do you think it's because we're about to go through a giant period of unknown times? There is a general feeling that in less than 12 weeks we're entering a whole new world where the rules have not yet been written. It's bound to make you FEEL more on edge even if outward behaviour remains the same. We're most of us still just plodding on - going to work, getting food and worrying.
