To think that the uk is a hostile environment for the natives aswell as for immigrants nowadays?

Well the government have succeeded in one thing; making the uk a hostile place to live for most people what with cuts. Brexit etc. Is it just me or do things feel... tense?

I think it's pretty racist to say ALL black people are predisposed to being violent, which was was what was said, and I argued against. Exactly as it would be to say ALL men are wired to be violent rapists. Although that's not likely to be said in this situation.

Indeed, I would agree that is racist. However people being nervous about immigration, lack of integration and some of the appalling views held in these immigrant communities isn't racism.

mirialis · 09/01/2019 09:50

The majority of knife crime in the uk is not carried out by black men!!

CatnissEverdene · 09/01/2019 09:51

Police cuts and rising racism massively stirred up by Brexit - yes I think it will all start to kick off, and God help us then.

Raglansleeve · 09/01/2019 09:54

Agree with localfluff about the 'demonstrations' around Westminster, however the right wing gobshites demonstrating are calling for civil unrest like the gilet jaune protests in France and are now receiving national media coverage for their nasty little agenda. They will appeal to people who feel disenfranchised and would like thump someone or throw a brick through a window.

there is definitely a febrile atmosphere and not just in the UK.

Trampire · 09/01/2019 10:00

Equally on Twitter I've heard much from 'the left' who are hoping for a breakdown in order after Brexit so the revolution can come.

ElonMask · 09/01/2019 10:01

mirialis

You are probably right, however in this case where I read about a brutal public murder carried out in broad daylight on a train I also initially suspect that the perpetrator is non white, which would make me a racist apparently.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 09/01/2019 10:01

I think rolling news and the rise of the Internet has a lot to answer for, 24 hour news had to be sensationalist to keep people's interest, and the Internet means anyone can make any opinion known to the world in seconds, consequently the loudest and most extreme voices get the most attention. I'm not saying we shouldn't have either but it feels like the genie is out of the bottle and I sometimes wonder if humans have the hindsight to use the Internet responsibily. Brexit and Trump probably wouldn't have happened before these things, regardless of the crash.

Trampire · 09/01/2019 10:01

Just to add, I'm not a raving right winger, just read Twitter a lot and this 'restlessness' and 'edginess' is nit just coming from one 'side'

SilverySurfer · 09/01/2019 10:03

There's a simple solution - if you don't like living here then move. I'm sure if you look hard enough that you can find another country somewhere in the world to suit you. We don't need your negativity here so win/win.

But of course you won't, it's so much more satisfying to stay here and moan isn't it.

ElonMask · 09/01/2019 10:09

I don't agree with this at all. At a conservative estimate a third of EU citizens do not want to be in the EU. Le Pen almost got in this time, the so called "far right" parties in Europe are increasingly popular. Britain is unique because we were the only ones given a say.

BeanTownNancy · 09/01/2019 10:10

And if ever you express disappointment or concern about the current atmosphere of the country you have grown up in and loved, you are immediately told "well move somewhere else then" - in blissful ignorance of the fact we are soon to lose freedom of movement, even if it wasn't incredibly logistically, financially and emotionally difficult to move your entire family to another country.

Why should we be expected to settle for "well it's not the worst country". Why can't we hope for better for all of our citizens? I have lived in other countries, and it's never perfect, but why does wishing things could be different have to mean you hate your country?

I too blame the media - always making everything "black and white", "us vs. them", where most people are shades of grey. But now you propose a mild political view one way or the other and you're suddenly dumped on a "side" and loaded up with hurtful stereotypes that don't apply to you at all. Feel sorry for asylum seekers: you're a lefty libtard snowflake communist remoaner; express concern at uncontrolled immigration: you're a fascist racist gammon brexshitter. It's very hostile and very ignorant.

gamerwidow · 09/01/2019 10:11

It’s definitely a hostile environment if you’re unfortunate enough to be disabled or face to claim any sort of benefit.
People are more angry and resentful of anyone having state help than I ever remember seeing before.

RabbityMcRabbit · 09/01/2019 10:14

I do think it's tense. Our government seems to be blind to issues such as the disaster that is Universal Credit, increased homelessness under their leadership, increased use of foodbanks, etc. On top of that they are stealth-privatising the NHS and schools and have made such swingeing cuts to the police service that some crime falls beneath the radar, all to the detriment of the public.
Then there's the disaster that is Brexit. So yes, I do think things have got worse and things do feel tense.

Trampire · 09/01/2019 10:14

As a person with no sway towards any one political party (but always votes) I agree with what you've said Bean.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 09/01/2019 10:15

Silvery I am well within my rights voice my concern for the direction in which my country is heading, without being told to leave it. It's called democracy.

gamerwidow · 09/01/2019 10:15

People who care about their country are concerned when it’s taken a downward turn and want to work to make it better not leave.
It’s more patriotic to want to make the country a better place for everyone then to accept the status quo because you’re worried about being seen as a complainer.

Thats what the British do

Moan about the government, the weather, the wrong person winning on strictly, the bus being late, the queue in the doctors

Polarbearflavour · 09/01/2019 10:16

I keep reading on the DM comments that there is going to be mass rioting and the “people” will stage an uprising after Brexit. Some comments are saying “let’s stop paying tax” and other such nonsense.

Nope. They’ll keep going to work as normal and moaning and paying their bills.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 09/01/2019 10:17

And what gamer said

Oh and sinister

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 09/01/2019 10:18

Local junior school cant afford pens and paper and have to turn the heat off

Damn right I'll moan about that

ElonMask · 09/01/2019 10:21

Then there's the disaster that is Brexit.

The thing to me is that given there are probably well over 100 million EU citizens that do not want to be in the EU saying their political views are a "disaster" is in itself controversial. People don't seem to see that any more because it's said so often. Consider how often you hear this view in the mainstream media versus "mass immigration has been a disaster for this country". One is already framed as an intolerable view.

RabbityMcRabbit · 09/01/2019 10:32

ElonMusk, by disaster I meant how this government are handling it, which is indeed diasastrous

localfluff · 09/01/2019 10:42

Moaning aka expressing legitimate concerns.
