Just that really.....I have fine shoulder length hair, in good condition with long layers. Occasionally I can get it to look ok, as in nice and full but it’s a bit hit and miss.

I have tried.....different shampoo and conditioner, washing every day, not washing every day, using heated Velcro rollers, different volumising sprays, different mousses, dry shampoo.

Sorry, I know this is shallow but any advice appreciated.

It is interesting reading people different experiences, for me it’s a balancing act. If my hair is in good condition it’s lifeless but if it’s too bad it’s starts to break. The same with products, too much it’s too heavy with no movement but not enough it’s static city. Layers only if short to stop a Darth Vader look and blunt once it’s past my ears. As an 80s permacholic I do miss the perms and sticking my head in a large diffuser, it was certainly great volume.

SatsumaFan · 08/01/2019 08:05

Anyone else made more of an effort this morning after reading this?! I've done

Reverse wash (conditioner on dry hair. Mid lengths to ends only)
Heat protection milk
Golf ball sized amount of hair mousse
Dry hair to 80% upside down whilst scrunching
Use Babyliss Big Hair properly (6 mins).

I have swishy full looking hair! Smile

SatsumaFan · 08/01/2019 08:12

Oh, and tip hair upside down and spray with hair spray, then finish off with a light spray on top too Smile

therewillbetime · 08/01/2019 09:46

I have SatsumaFan, though not as well as you.

I tried the conditioner on dry hair and then shampooing afterwards which has certainly made it feel a bit bouncier.

Thickening mousse and Babyliss en route from Amazon arriving tomorrow!

Propertywoe - completely agree particularly with the Darth Vader issue! How funny.

I have very thin, very fine hair and I can't get on
with the BBH. My hair is so fine it blows it away from the brush and I end up with fluffy flyaway hair.

astoundedgoat · 08/01/2019 10:07

I have the same problem, and I look at Victoria Beckham because apart from being slightly darker, her hair is very similar to mine. Fine, not a lot of it. She has stuck with a shoulder length bob for ages now, tuzzled and waved for volume, and a clip in ponytail for occasions. She does makeup tutorials on her Insta from time to time - I'd love to see a hair one!

I also hugely second the Batiste Heavenly Volume. It's amazing. There's also a little shaker of volumising powder from Batiste and that's great too. And the Babyliss Big Hair. And a good mousse - like in the £8 price range in Boots.

80sMum · 08/01/2019 10:12

This is what I do with mine. Keep it fairly short (short bob with long layers). Wash on alternate days. Use volume moose. Blow dry upside down while scrunching the roots. Style it, then use hairspray to keep it there.

SatsumaFan · 08/01/2019 10:25

Have you tried using a small amount of mousse before the BBH? Helps my flyaway hair.

Just bought BBH. If I still have flat rubbish hair, I'm blaming you lot Grin

Madeline88 · 08/01/2019 10:33

I stopped getting layers and just get the ends trimmed and the sides of my face shaped. It looks much better.

Roussette · 08/01/2019 10:59

eeeek Francis hope it works! I've never used a lot of conditioner anyway but as it can be hell to rinse out of fine hair, and I read an article in a mag suggesting it, I tried and it suits me!

Have layers cut into your hair, get your hair cut every six weeks so the layers don't get too long, use John Freida thickening root booster on the roots after washing, dry your hair upside down, shape a few waves with a flat iron, sprinkle a little Basiste or other plumping powder on the roots, shake through upside down: ta daaa! Thick hair.

Proof: I have very thin, fine hair. This is what it looks like after doing all that.

To ask how anybody with fine, thin hair manages to create a nice hair do.
StoatofDisarray · 08/01/2019 11:10

Oh, and only put conditioner on the ends!

StormTreader · 08/01/2019 11:13

Does anyone else find the "ionic" everything trend frustrating? I find that if I use an Ionic dryer it becomes a heap of staticky flyaway thin mess. I lucked out with a flash Lidl hairdryer with the option to turn it off otherwise just about every dryer is Ionic whether you want it or not.

MargoLovebutter · 08/01/2019 11:31

Waves at fellow hair posters.

I have fine, thinnish, greasy hair - awesome combo!!!!! I have to wash my hair every day, otherwise I look like a mole rat (deeply unattractive creatures - feel free to google, but probably not while you are eating).

Alberto range of shampoos work best for me, as I don't need conditioner if I use them. My personal favourite is the tea tree one.

Highlights really helps as the different colours gives a more textured appearance.

I have medium length hair with a few blunt layers in it, which I get trimmed every 6/7 weeks. No feathering otherwise I look wispy.

I find old-skool hair mouse is a great volumiser and stiffener - fabulous stuff and usually fairly cheap too, compared to some of the "texturisers" and "plumpers" that I've tried, which haven't been any more effective.

Straighteners are a definite no-no, as they leave me with flat, lifeless hair that clings to my head. I blow dry with lots of volume and often dry upside down and then I finish with a hot brush, which smooths but doesn't flatten.

Mousewithascarf · 08/01/2019 15:16

SatsumaFan last night I sectioned my hair off and took more time and care using round brush and hairdryer. It definitely looked better. Went to get a BBH petite from Argos up the road, but all the branches around here are out of stock! I’m blaming this thread 😀.

haverhill · 08/01/2019 15:26

Hair mousse - it's the lightest hair product and won't weigh it down used judiciously.
Lightened/dyed hair/highlighted - a little bit of damage will boost volume and texture.
Texturising powder or salt spray, used sparingly.
A good cut. I just have a longish one lenghth bob as layers seem to decrease the bulk.

AnotherBeautifulDayToBeRogelio · 08/01/2019 15:43

Also very fine and thin hair here. I used the babyliss big hair but it suddenly struck me that it made me look like Anthea Turner circa 1980s so I gave up on it.

I found the best hairstyle was a chin length blunt bob, but after 20-odd years with the same style I was bored to tears, so I had hair extensions put in. I LOVE my hair now! I only went a couple of inches longer as they were mainly for thickness, but the difference is astounding. So thick and swishy and best of all EASY. I used to wash, dry, straighten, backcomb, faff every single day just to look half decent. But now I only need to wash it every 5 days or so and I barely need to style it and it looks amazing.

As a result, over the year I've had extensions, my own hair is looking thinner because I'm washing it less, not fiddling with it or over styling it, so I'm losing a lot less hair.

AnotherBeautifulDayToBeRogelio · 08/01/2019 15:47

*own hair is looking thicker (not thinner! Grin)

SatsumaFan · 08/01/2019 16:36

@AnotherBeautifulDayToBeRogelio haha at Anthea Turner! Grin

What sort of extensions do you have? Are they really high maintenance and expensive?! Am tempted to look into them.

@StoatofDisarray thanks for all the tips...you look great in that photo! Smile

Minniemountain · 08/01/2019 17:05

When my hair is long I either put it in a ponytail or twist it up with a clip with mousse worked through.

I generally have a chin length bob though.
