To ask how anybody with fine, thin hair manages to create a nice hair do.

Just that really.....I have fine shoulder length hair, in good condition with long layers. Occasionally I can get it to look ok, as in nice and full but it’s a bit hit and miss.

I have tried.....different shampoo and conditioner, washing every day, not washing every day, using heated Velcro rollers, different volumising sprays, different mousses, dry shampoo.

Sorry, I know this is shallow but any advice appreciated.

I'm blonde too RoboticSealpup your hairdresser's reluctance to do lowlights may be because dying blonde hair darker can make it go green if you're unlucky. The only way to fix that is to bleach the lowlights out, which defeats the object.

Wavingwhiledrowning · 06/01/2019 22:52

I swear by Bumble and Bumble Texture Creme. So many compliments on my hair when I use it, but otherwise have limp, thin hair that looks awful!

Following as I have the same problem. Unfortunately I don't have enough hair to cover extensions - I'm passed that. Sad Clay masks help a bit but I have to wash every day if I'm going out.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 06/01/2019 22:58

I have fine hair and always had layers as that’s what salon stylists told me I should have to give more volume.

Until one day I had a new stylist and she threw up her hands in horror at the idea of layers. She cut my hair bluntly and it looks so much better. As she said, if you haven’t got as much hair as you’d like to start with, why make it even finer at the ends?

CatnissEverdene · 06/01/2019 22:59

I've got lots of fine blonde highlights through my T section. It really helps add texture to the hair, and dries it out a bit.... and I find a good cut makes a massive difference, mine is layered but only on the bottom 2 inches so it adds movement. Most shampoos and sprays just leave my hair feeling horrid and tacky so I've abandoned hope and just use dry shampoo but very sparingly if it needs a bit of root volume.

RiojaHaze · 06/01/2019 23:06

Definitely a blunt cut rather than layers - my hair is really fine and an inch or two below my shoulders.

I've just bought the messy bun band from Lullabellz and it's brilliant for giving me a decent bun rather than a pathetic little knot on top of my head!

Dancer12345 · 06/01/2019 23:07

@FloralTeacup Same here. I can make it look half decent when it’s just washed, but the next day it’s flat, looks greasy but isn’t, and basically looks like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards. I don’t understand how people can wake up and their hair just looks normal!

SynchroSwimmer · 06/01/2019 23:08

I find swimming in indoor (adult only!) pools (chlorine or ozone?) swells my fine hair in a really nice way.

A chap in the next swimming lane said the same...but that may have been a chat-up line....

Also, an accidental finding, I have no dandruff, but any dandruff shampoo bulks up my hair in a good way, from the cheapest ASDA own brand to the posher Head & Shoulders.

The gym showers also seem to have softened water, so I always come out of there with fabulous bouncy hair, unlike at home in dreadful hard water...

I think the journalist India Knight wrote a few months ago something along the lines that she could forget trying endless costly shampoo and conditioner variations - and just use softened water from the plumbed in water softener.

Might explain why my hair improves no end if I holiday in Devon and Cornwall (softer water than this Thames Water stuff)

(Inspired by India Knight’s report I did try a Calgon tablet dissolved in loads of water - but to truly terrible effects!)

I am going to experiment with the Epsom Salts as mentioned earlier...

Letsmoveondude · 06/01/2019 23:09

like many other PPs, I also use a big hair styler, mousse, ditched conditioner and got a long sort of tousled bob. without the big hair styler I have thin, flyaway hair that never looks tidy, with it i actually have a sping in my step, I feel like ive got something I can do something with.... i even do it if im planning on putting my hair up (which i can barely do because of the length, but it dont half lift and make a difference)

its made such a difference my husband bought me a spare big hair styler for my birthday because he knows what a difference it makes to me and my hair.

Drogosnextwife · 06/01/2019 23:10

I was and blow dry mine upside down over the bath, wash with lush seanik shampoo bar (quite drying so need a intensive conditioner maybe once a week). Only wash it maybe 2 times a week goes up in a bobble the rest of the time. Np chance I could wear it down the day after washing. After I've styled it I use a really strong hair spray, got 2 b is my favourite, its a yellow bottle. O take sections of hair and spray underneath the section and then place the takes part bottle under the section of hair vertically like a big roller and leave for a second until the spray sets, do this all over your hair and then leave for a while without brushing, infact best not to brush it put just run fingers through. Think I'll try the living proof. Is it definitely worth the money?

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 06/01/2019 23:17

For those with very very thin hair something like 'hair integration' can work really well. It's a hair piece which is made for you on a mesh base and your own hair is pulled through strand by strand. It wears, washes and styles like your own hair and doesn't come off like a wig. I know a few people who've used them and they look amazing. They do need to be professionally made and fitted but work really well.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 06/01/2019 23:19

2 pregnancies close together has turned my previously pathetic, limp hair into a wavy bouffant. That’s a bit drastic though.

I used to wash and straighten my hair every day as well- it felt greasy and even more flat if I didn’t.

Being off on maternity leave meant I could get out of that over washing cycle without feeling self conscious going into work. Now I only wash my hair every four days or so, let it dry naturally and only straighten it once a week max. Easily the best thing I could have done - all the money I wasted on special shampoos and mousses etc when actually just messing about with my hair less was the answer!

Drogosnextwife · 06/01/2019 23:23

@Wavingwhiledrowning

Is it the blow dry cream or the texture one you use?

Propertywoe · 06/01/2019 23:24

I have recently managed to have a go with the Dyson air wrap , the results were no different to the babyliss but there was no hair loss at all with the Dyson. Can not justify the cost at the moment but if my hair keeps shedding I might start saving.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 06/01/2019 23:28

Ooh property that’s interesting. I love my Big Hair but have been tempted by the Dyson and no hair loss sounds like an excellent excuse! Where did you go to try it out?

halfwitpicker · 06/01/2019 23:35

Another one disagreeing about layers. IMHO the blunter the better.

Wash it twice in the shower.
Silicone free shampoo.
Don't conditioner.
Only wash every other day.

mollyblack · 06/01/2019 23:46

Same situation here and I get by with lush shampoo, the batiste xl dry shampoo good. I use a dark powder dry shampoo in my parting to make my big shiny scalp less obvious. I out on dry shampoo as soon as i've babyliss big haired my hair dry- seems to help rather than waiting until its greasy (not that that takes long!) i also got nanogen fibres from boots in a dark colour cause they can bulk the roots up and mask baldy bits a bit too.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/01/2019 23:52

Apart from a good cut what you want is to let it air dry and use some dry shampoo or texturising spray.
Wash every three or four days, job done.

BumbleBeee69 · 07/01/2019 00:00

I’ve ordered the Living Proof thicking cream too, thank you, of and I’m going to reassess my layers to folks, time for a change. Grin

great Thread btw

GunpowderGelatine · 07/01/2019 00:01

Answer: I don't. I can't do anything with it. Sorry, not helpful

mmmgoats · 07/01/2019 00:11

@hollaholla has she tried the hair burst capsules or chewable vitamins? They’re supposed to be amazing, a friend has used them (still does) and her hair has thickened from what she used to describe as her “wisp” to actual strong hair

RockYourSocksOff · 07/01/2019 00:41

Fine straight hair here too!

Definitely no layers, just a bit of shaping around the front. Highlights to plump hair up a bit.

My hair needs a good cut atm, definitely feels better just at shoulder length.

I do need to try some products though, I’ve become lazy. I just wash, dry and go.

Agee, great thread.

RockYourSocksOff · 07/01/2019 00:42

Oh and I wish I had the face shape and ears for a pixie cut but sadly not! Xmas Envy

Atchiclees · 07/01/2019 02:06

Holla my mum has the same hair. Very fine, thinning and you can see her scalp through. She gets very depressed and often won’t go out as she feels her hair lets her down.
Will get her to try the dry shampoo and go through other suggestions. Your mum is not alone Flowers
