To ask how anybody with fine, thin hair manages to create a nice hair do.

Just that really.....I have fine shoulder length hair, in good condition with long layers. Occasionally I can get it to look ok, as in nice and full but it’s a bit hit and miss.

I have tried.....different shampoo and conditioner, washing every day, not washing every day, using heated Velcro rollers, different volumising sprays, different mousses, dry shampoo.

Sorry, I know this is shallow but any advice appreciated.

therewillbetime yes, I just slap a bit of conditioner on my dry hair, work it through my hair with my fingers, hop in the shower, rinse it, add shampoo... rinse and finish. If I use condition at the end like normal, it takes forever to rinse out and my hair ends up more fine and floppy.

I read this in a magazine years ago and have done it since! (might not work for everyone!)

Highlights.

Short cut only seems to be what I’m stuck with.

XXcstatic · 07/01/2019 18:18

I’d like to try the Babyliss big hair but am worried I’d get it tangled and lose more

I am a total klutz with all hair styling, but I can use the Babyliss Big Hair - literally life-changing and doesn't tangle at all.

SatsumaFan · 07/01/2019 18:19

@Mousewithascarf there are two different sizes of BBH. You'd be better off getting the smaller, 42mm barrel one with your hair. It sounds the same as mine and I get on great with it (better than the original 50mm). Took me a while to get the hang of it as am also cursed with cack hands! YouTube vids helped Smile

They're about £35 on Amazon but sometimes go lower (I got a new one for £27.99 at the end of Nov) so worth watching it.

Chottie · 07/01/2019 18:26

Another vote for the BBH. I would recommend watching the videos too.

Please can you talk to me about the Dyson one? Is it really good, is it gentle on your hair, it is really worth the price?

Mousewithascarf · 07/01/2019 18:28

Thank you. That’s reassuring XX and Satsuma . I’ve checked out YouTube tutorials and it does ‘look’ easy but wasn’t sure if it was just that the women on the vids were very good at hair styling. Will see how much the 42mm ones are.

therewillbetime · 07/01/2019 18:48

Thanks Rousette, will try this.

The Babybliss thing....sorry to be thick but after washing do you just dry your hair off and then use?

If you have got fine hair, you won't need to pre-dry it. I usually let my hair air-dry for 5-10 minutes, then use the Big Hair: it dries as well as styles.

If you have thick hair, you can rough-dry it with a hairdryer first.

Mousewithascarf · 07/01/2019 18:57

therewillbetime that’s how it looks to be used on the YouTube videos I watched about the Babyliss. Some reviews seem to say the brush is too soft and doesn’t grip the hair which is a bit concerning especially as my hair is so fine and soft there’s not much for it to grasp on to to begin with

Oblomov18 · 07/01/2019 19:06

Mine only looks semi decent when I leave the hairdressers, after having it cut and more importantly blow dried.

After that. It goes to shit.

Propertywoe · 07/01/2019 20:39

If anyone is looking at the babybliss big hair the revlon 2:1 is also a good choice for bob length. My babyliss was better when my hair was longer and I wanted a curl but the revlon has been much better for root lift. My local John Lewis has the Dyson air wrap for demonstration purposes.

Mousewithascarf · 07/01/2019 20:55

Thanks Property that’s good to know. Will check out the Revlon. Dyson way over my budget alas.

HollaHolla · 07/01/2019 21:00

@Mousewithascarf - I got mum the bigger one (as it was the only one they did at the time...) and she’s been fine with it. Replaced it with exactly the same, when it went kaput. She’s totally ham fisted, and I’ve only ever rarely seen anyone with less hair than her, and she can make it quite nice. She uses it on towel dried hair, and it takes less than 5 mins I’d say. Her hair dries so quickly.
I think I’ll look at getting her some of the hair powder suggested, next time I’m in town. She’s super active, and a very young 70-something, but relies on me a lot for hair/fashion things, as apparently I tell her when she’s looking like a granny, without making her ‘mutton dressed as lamb’! 🤣

Mousewithascarf · 07/01/2019 21:22

HollaHolla that’s good to know. How long is your DMs hair? Mine has graduated layers at the back and longest layer is about 3”

therewillbetime · 07/01/2019 21:26

Sorry, which one is the Revlon one?

HollaHolla · 07/01/2019 21:33

@Mousewithascarf - Mum’s is a short bob. Just between ear and chin length. She’d love it graduated, but there’s not enough hair to do that.

She’s almost convinced to join mumsnet because of this thread. She’s been very excited when I’ve showed her this - she says she’s found her people!

Placemarking for when I have time to come back and spend ££££

Mousewithascarf · 07/01/2019 22:07

HollaHolla that’s great thanks. Tell your DM to join. I’m nearly 60 and love the Style and Beauty and chat sections.

Roussette · 07/01/2019 22:52

I'm probably same age as your Mum Holla !

Propertywoe · 07/01/2019 22:58

Revlon pro collection One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer.

StrawberrySquash · 07/01/2019 23:01

I had very fine hair as a child. It's much better these days. I suspect that's because it's 50% silicone; I use a Tresemmé heat protecting spray before I dry it. Maybe it got thinker as I got older or maybe it's the spray. My hair certainly feels better if I use it on a given day, just more finished.

StrawberrySquash · 07/01/2019 23:02

Thinker = thicker

Truckingonandon · 07/01/2019 23:33

I pick up my new Revlon one step gizmo tomorrow. Can't wait to try it.

Hair enhancers are something else to look at. They're a bit like half a wig , that just go over the top of your own hair and blend in and hide visible scalp.

Toptheginup · 07/01/2019 23:43

I had extremely thin hair at one point so had it cut into a bob just above the shoulders.
I found that although when I wore it down it looked thicker but the styling was so damaging.
I gradually grew it out which has taken about a year and a half and it is now touching my bra strap at the back which was my goal.
During the growing out process I tried to limit the heat damage to my hair, use gentle semi colours rather than anything too strong.
Blunt is best for me, and regular trims (tiny amount off) kept it healthy and beginning to look thicker.
Still thin at the sides I decided to try vitamins so this is what I started to take:
Pregnacare new mum
Vit b12
Cod liver oil
Vit b complex
Iron
Vitamin d
I never noticed an immediate difference but I feel that taking those vitamins greatly benefited my hair and the growth (I could see a notable difference in my once fragile thin fingernails too).
Aside from that, I try to let it dry naturally when I'm not going anywhere important so I'll just stick it up in a pony tail, back comb, twist around into a messy bun and pin, finish with a good hairspray, got 2 b is the best hold.
If I'm styling I put my head upside down to get volume although it's never as voluminous as I'd like, section my partly dried hair and blast at the root with my hairdryer. Tiny bit of serum and run straighteners over it.
My hair is not thick by any means but it certainly thicker than it used to be plus healthier and longer.
Limit heat damage, take your vitamins and work with what you've got. Wink

Tape in hair extensions have been a game changer for me and they don’t damage your hair like normal extensions, they are used for people who have fine hair who could not take the weight of a normal hair extension, if you have extremely fine hair you can even have single sided tape ins to lessen the weight even further. When I have them put in I literally feel like a hair advert! Swishy gorgeous hair!
