To think vodka shots at home are unacceptable?

Me and my friends think so! DH thinks it's fine... both DDs have bought shot glasses and 40% vodka!!! Planning on having shots tonight, isn't that something you really don't do at home?

Theoryofmould · 24/12/2018 18:24

If my dd and whoever is staying over start making a racket due to being drunk they get told to belt up. I'm fine with the shots, I'm not fine with 3am noise due to the shots.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 24/12/2018 18:26

What else are you meant to have with caviar?

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 24/12/2018 18:28

I'd suggest you have a couple with them op....and chill the fuck out.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 24/12/2018 18:28

DH and I also have a shot of premium tequila before getting on a flight together. Just in case.

GenericHamster · 24/12/2018 18:29

It’s fine but... I don’t think OP is totally ott.

The other week I read a long article about a young girl (in the us) who went to a friend’s house for drinks, decided to challenge herself to do 15 shots, wasn’t supervised and was found dead the next morning sitting next to a toilet.

Obviously that is an extreme case but it can be hard to know when to stop. If someone had challenged me I might’ve tried to go for it

Purpleartichoke · 24/12/2018 18:30

I prefer liquor to beer or wine. Strangely people who will have drink after drink of beer or wine think I am the party animal when I have an ounce or two of liquor instead and then stop drinking for the night.

It isn’t what you drink, it’s how much alcohol you consume.

GenericHamster · 24/12/2018 18:30

Found the article - www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/parenting/a13054/binge-drinking-killed-shelby-allen/

GenericHamster · 24/12/2018 18:31

Really not meaning to scaremonger but that article stayed with me.

Hoopaloop · 24/12/2018 18:32

Some random polish girl bought everyone in the pub two shots of vodka last night. I absolutely hate the stuff but she wasn't taking no for an answer (there was only about 6 people in at the time).

blueskiesandforests · 24/12/2018 18:42

GenericHamster that's awful, tragic waste.

That girl drunk 15 shots in under an hour, which is a whole bottle of vodka for one 17 year old all on her own - plus whatever she'd already had before the parents went to bed though. That's pretty extreme.

MustShowDH · 24/12/2018 18:49

I'm surprised your 18yr old hasn't been out drinking before.
Do you have issues with alcohol generally and this has hit a nerve?
Where would you rather they drank? Park bench? Seedy club?
The more you object, the more you will drive them to it.

Get a couple of buckets and a bottle of water by their beds and make sure you play high-pitched xmas music nice and loud in the morning.

HAPPY XMAS!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 24/12/2018 18:51

That is a tragic story but even I, as a seasoned drinker would probably die drinking a bottle of vodka in under an hour.

The key is teaching young people about sensible drinking rather than banning it as the vast majority of people drink quite happily with no problem other than the odd hangover.

ChristmasCuddles · 24/12/2018 18:53

Following to see how this story ends.

Ps. I would be fine with it. Ask them if you can join in, I suspect that might make it less appealing to them.

PickAChew · 24/12/2018 18:55

Get over yourself. It's no worse than downing a bottle of wine.

ItIsChristmasTime · 24/12/2018 18:57

I would just focus on the fact your family is healthy and with you for Christmas and you are all together under one roof.

PinkHeart5914 · 24/12/2018 19:00

Well I’ve had 4 glasses of whiskey already tonight so what’s the difference?

Luckily my mother is watching over me like a sour puss, she’s joining in as she’s here for Xmas Xmas Smile

Ruddle91 · 24/12/2018 19:02

I won't be having "shots" but I'll be drinking whiskey on the rocks tonight. Same difference really.

Whereisthecoffee · 24/12/2018 19:04

I have done jäger bombs at home pre kids
Forever classy

Ohheyyy · 24/12/2018 19:05

It's Christmas, a party and celebration time. They're party drinks. Live a little.

JuniperBeer · 24/12/2018 19:07

Jesus maybe they just want to do some shots? They are young girls. Your older DD is clearly happy to catch up and have some fun with her sister. She could be out at the pub with her mates on Christmas Eve! ThTs what most teens who are old enough to drink I know do.
Why do you think it’s going to get reckless? Why are you going to allow it to get reckless?
Let them have their shots. Tell them no noise after 1am, they don’t want to ruin tomorrow.
Shots is one thing. Behaving like a twat and keeping your parents awake at 3am is a different kettle of fish entirely!

LondonHuffyPuffy · 24/12/2018 19:16

Wow. MN can be so po-faced sometimes.

One of my favourite Christmas memories was when I was 18. I had just come back for the holidays from Germany where I had been working as an Au Pair.

My Mum and I had an absolutely brilliant evening wrapping presents, drinking wine and then later doing shots of Malteserkreuz Aquavit which I had brought back with me (a truly horrible spirit. Not malteser flavoured, sadly). We talked about life, the universe and everything. My Nan came downstairs to see what all the fuss was about and even she had a shot. That was nearly 30 years ago and I still remember it now. We had crashing hangovers the next day but we all managed to cook Christmas dinner together. Actually I think Nan just sat sipping sherry but she tried.

I am now 46, Man is long gone and Mum is 70 and she just texted me in a panic because she forgot to buy apple juice for the mulled white wine she is making us for Boxing Day. I have no doubt that shots will be consumed during the day.

My parents gave me a generally healthy attitude towards alcohol. We are all fairly big drinkers so for us drinking shots would be a shared, fun thing to do.

Anyway. Just my take on things.

cardibach · 24/12/2018 19:24

I’m drinmi;g a deeply middle class and acceptable prosecco with gingerbread gin liqueur, but I really fancy a vodka shot now...
OP if it’s noise you are worried about, tell them to be quiet! The vodka is fine.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 24/12/2018 19:26

When my sister and I drink together we take shots, neither of us enjoy a night out so we are happy to get drunk together in the kitchen lol not that it happens often

lilliem · 24/12/2018 19:28

I am having a glass of wine, yes, but I won't be drunk at 1am. I assumed telling them to be quiet would be also seen as a "kill joy". To be honest, is it even possible to tell 2 drunk people to keep the noise down? That's my concern.

OP posts:
MrsFoxPlus4 · 24/12/2018 19:32

Has this happened before is that why your dreading it?
