AND they knew he would pull this stunt, as it was mentioned in parliament which can be read on Hansard.

Datun · 10/12/2018 22:05

IT IS TRUE, btw.

Thank you AverageAvenger. I didn't doubt it.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 10/12/2018 22:05

However, self ID would absolutely see him in a female prison. And the government has to understand that.

I don't see how they can have missed it.

They've painted themselves into a corner. Either they face down the TRA lobby and re draw lines in law separating sex and gender, and reinforce the EA to make single sex spaces much stronger and easier to protect, or they deal with the voters and national scandal when this all blows up in their faces. Not much of a choice really.

Datun · 10/12/2018 22:06

AND they knew he would pull this stunt, as it was mentioned in parliament which can be read on Hansard.

Yup. But who gives a shit.

sackrifice · 10/12/2018 22:07

They know, and have known since the original GRA discussions.

sackrifice · 10/12/2018 22:08

This is why the Speaker refused questions in the house about it.

Ereshkigal · 10/12/2018 22:09

Plus - how does it actually work? If every single pervert is requesting a transfer, do they all get assessed? How much does that cost the public?

Good point.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 10/12/2018 22:10

It was scandalous that was allowed too, Sackrifice.

Although standards are now so low and the scandals piling so high that no one seems to notice or care any more.

deepwatersolo · 10/12/2018 22:44

[government]‘ve painted themselves into a corner

So did they do that to distract from the Brexit situation, or did they create the Brexit drama to distract from the self-ID clusterfuck?

VickyEadie · 10/12/2018 22:56

So did they do that to distract from the Brexit situation, or did they create the Brexit drama to distract from the self-ID clusterfuck?

I think both fall under the category 'we really didn't give much thought to the implications of this'.

HestiaParthenos · 10/12/2018 23:55

I think both fall under the category 'we really didn't give much thought to the implications of this'.

Though with the Brexit, it at least wasn't as immediately obvious what the consequences would be.

"Letting men choose whether they want to invade women's spaces will lead to lots of rapists invading women's spaces" is rather obvious.

The Brexit situation is slightly more complicated and allows for more obfuscating. People who didn't take the time to inform themselves about it before voting are still guilty of laziness, but ... well, it doesn't require as much stubborn stupidity as being in favour of self-ID.

PositivelyPERF · 10/12/2018 23:59

With Brexit the government is trying to creat borders, while at the same time removing the protective borders for women. Arse about face.

R0wantrees · 11/12/2018 00:00

This is why the Speaker refused questions in the house about it.

Worth watching John Bercow's speech at a Pink News reception the day after the government's public consultation on changes to the GRA to allow self-id was opened:

www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/07/04/speaker-john-bercow-tells-pinknews-reception-2/

(extract)
"House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has hit out at anti-trans voices in the media in a speech at the PinkNews summer reception in Parliament.

Speaker Bercow was hosting the PinkNews summer reception in Westminster in partnership with Zurich, which follows events in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Although the holder of the office of Speaker is required to be politically independent, Bercow has repeatedly spoken up in favour of LGBT equality during his nine years in the role.

He made no exception at the July 4 PinkNews reception in Speaker’s House, giving a “most explicit and unequivocal statement of support” for LGBT rights and PinkNews.

In his speech, the Speaker hit out at anti-transgender voices in the media, the week the government launched a much-criticised consultation on gender recognition rules." (continues)

Bercow
"There’s still a huge challenge in terms of the trans community. We need to up our level of standing up for the rights of trans people. We shouldn’t allow people to peddle anti-trans messages under the guise of trying to protect other people’s rights. We shouldn’t let people muddy the waters in that way. It’s just not people screaming abuse in the streets – it’s sometimes people who have access to the media and can write articulately, and are using their position to push messages which I think result in very considerable and dangerous displays of hostility to trans people. Up with that we must not put, as Churchill might have said.”

Winston Churchill in the U.K. Parliament on October 13, 1943:

'So we must beware of a tyranny of opinion which tries to make only one side of a question the one which may be heard. Everyone is in favour of free speech. Hardly a day passes without its being extolled, but some people’s idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage.'

So did they do that to distract from the Brexit situation, or did they create the Brexit drama to distract from the self-ID clusterfuck?

Its a cross-party issue.
Lobbying behind the scenes has been going on for some time.

R0wantrees · 11/12/2018 00:20

John Bercow (Speaker of the House of Commons) might have cause to reflect on his condemnation of those journalists who have investigated and discussed the conflicts of rights, dangers of unqustioning adherence to trans-ideology & challenged those trans-rights activist individuals, charities and organisations.

Janice Turner wins Comment Journalist of the Year
she writes very articulately

twitter.com/pressgazette/status/1072247520141733888

Janice said: “When you write about really difficult and toxic subjects it really helps to have your newspaper behind you and I just want to thank the Times... who have been completely behind me in dealing with something that is complicated. I have a privilege in being able to write about this difficult subject, which is not something women in universities have at the moment, and I urge that we debate this more thoroughly and freely.”

Honestly, genuinely, that made me laugh out loud.

Well you people seem increasingly to be wandering into AIBU appealing for insight as to why people find your attitudes so repellent, I can't work out if it's a takeover bid or a cry for help.

SoleBizzz · 11/12/2018 02:55

Has anything about this vile thing ever been right?

Bowlofbabelfish · 11/12/2018 03:01

fox do you think prisons should be mixed sex?

jophie80 · 11/12/2018 05:07

The rules are clear, any man wanting to be recognised as a woman, needs to have lived as a woman for 5-10 years already (sorry I forgot the exact time period), but no he cannot suddenly just turn into a woman and allowed into a woman's prison.... This is Daily Mail Rubbish!

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 11/12/2018 05:59

Unfortunately it's not rubbish, Jophie. There are quite a few males in women's prisons & if self-ID went through they'd more or less be able to move on request. Where are you getting your information from?

Datun · 11/12/2018 07:10

appealing for insight as to why people find your attitudes so repellent,

Pretty damning that you think keeping a child murder out of the female estate 'repellent'.

Datun · 11/12/2018 07:10

*murderer

Datun · 11/12/2018 07:16

@jophie80

It's two years for a GRC, which means automatic transfer.

But no time at all for assessing on a case by case basis. Anyone can say they are female and it has to be take seriously. Hence the rapist and paedophile Karen White being convicted of sexually assaulting two of the women they were incarcerated with.

Screenshot of Karen White.

Not that clear then?

Bearing in mind you forgot the exact time period, and don't know what 'living as a woman' even is.

What IS it? Wearing a wig? A dress? Stockings as mentioned in the article? I don't do any of those and yet...yup...still a woman.

Datun · 11/12/2018 07:33

Oh, and The rules are clear...This is Daily Mail Rubbish!

might offer NonExistentFox a clue as to why

you people seem increasingly to be wandering into AIBU
