To not know what the F our air bnb host is talking about in her review of us???

Ok I'm literally gobsmacked.

Got back a week ago from an air bnb apartment holiday. Before we left I cleaned top to bottom. Stripped beds and put all bedding and towels together for washing, swept, mopped, wiped down showers, sinks, cleaned toilets. The works. DH said I was being over the top but I was conscious that this wasn't the usual big company holiday let and wanted to leave it as we found it. We left a really good review for the owner.

Today received a notification that the owner has left us a review. It's HORRIFIC. It says the apartment was dirty, towels were dirty (not sure how they expect them to be sparkling clean after a 2 week stay and surely they wash them between guests???), she then goes on to say that there was EXCREMENT on the duvet!!! I aired and folded that duvet myself and it was spotless!!! And that there was excrement smeared on the bedroom walls and she has to redecorate!!! Like WTAF???

I have no words right now... I haven't been able to compose a reply as I have nothing to say except WTF? I spent half of my last day of holiday cleaning the apartment.... I think I would have noticed shit stains on the walls??

What do I do?? Can I argue the review with air bnb? I wish now I had taken pictures before we left but it never occurred to me that this could happen??

How bizarre! I wonder if she confused you with someone else, or accidentally attributed it to the wrong person? I don’t know if you can challenge it but worth asking airbnb.

VisitorsEntrance · 18/11/2018 23:10

Could you say to her that you left everything spotless and you are concerned that they may have had a break in by the sound of it.

Maelstrop · 18/11/2018 23:12

Bloody hell, puts me off ever using Air BnB! Too late now, but always take dated photos in place like that.

Feefeetrixabelle · 18/11/2018 23:13

Contact air bnb. Did you take pics before you left?

blackcat86 · 18/11/2018 23:13

I would contact air bnb pronto. I wonder if she is trying to get some free redecorating or send you some additional charges for 'damage' otherwise I'm not really sure what she would get out of it.

WendyWoofer · 18/11/2018 23:13

Can you link the review?

Never have I cleaned an air b&b apartment so thoroughly. I've always left it clean. It's upto the host to clean and bleach ready for the next family. That's why air B&B employ them.

cricketmum84 · 18/11/2018 23:18

To be honest I'm the same with a haven caravan! Always clean the bathroom, sweep round, strip beds and bag the sheets even though the cleaner is there waiting lol.

She hasn't sent us a bill for anything so unsure if she would be doing it to cover her own redecorating fees. I just can't understand it? Our kids are 9 and 14 so waaaay past the age where something like that could happen accidentally. Plus me and DH both checked every room for left behind items so would have seen anything like she is describing!

And nope no photos taken before we left. The host came to get the key about an hour before they were due so we were kinda rushed out or else I might have thought to!

Lesson firmly learned for if we ever book an air bnb again...

Clearly confused you with someone else. Or maybe a chancer got in there after you left and made a shitty mess everywhere.

Thomasinaa · 18/11/2018 23:27

You need to raise it with the host - they may have mixed you up with someone else. And then with Airbnb. This could mean that other people won't let you stay.

bevelino · 19/11/2018 07:51

OP, you should take this up with Airbnb as negative reviews can lead to difficulties using Airbnb elsewhere.

MaryJenson · 19/11/2018 07:55

Terrible but, why the hell are you doing all that when you’ve paid a cleaning fee?

Branleuse · 19/11/2018 07:57

reply I think youve confused me with somebody else as i cleaned the place top to bottom before I left and it was spotless. I am contacting air-bnb to take down this slanderous feedback, and other customers beware

flugelhorn81 · 19/11/2018 08:01

Something similar happened to us - not quite as severe but we left a flat spotless and were fully expecting a glowing review yet the owner picked out all sorts of things that didn't match up, then asked us for compensation. We think he was expecting us to leave a bad review because of an issue we'd had with the door, and did it in self-defence. We messaged him privately first to say we were surprised, then left a reply to his review saying there had been a misunderstanding. That might at least be an option. I was so upset so I imagine you are too!

Doidontimmm · 19/11/2018 08:14

Id contact Airbnb. It sounds bizarre! I’m a host and I’m afraid I wouldn’t let you book my home if I read that review as even if you reply denying it I’d be nervous. I would ask Airbnb for photo evidence as the host would surely have taken photos. (Which obviously she can’t produce). I’m assuming she had no guests in between your stay and leaving the review?

Hoppinggreen · 19/11/2018 08:20

You really need to get the review taken down if possible.
I own an apartment I rent on Airbnb and I always check reviews of renters. Even if I wants sure whether it was true I wouldn’t risk renting to you

MyBrexitIsIll · 19/11/2018 08:21

I’d contact airb&b. I’ve used them a lot and have never had any issues like that.
I, too, tend to clean everything top to bottom and all the comments I’ve ever had was how clean the room/flat was afterwards. As in, it’s very unusual for people to do that.

There is something wrong with host there and airb&b needs to be aware about it.

Rainbunny · 19/11/2018 08:22

I use Airbnb regularly and this is the thing I dread happening. Can I ask what country this Airbnb was located in? i have suspicions and there are certain countries I will not do Airbnb in.

bibbidybobbidyboo · 19/11/2018 08:23

This happened to a friend of mine - turned out it was a scam the host sometimes pulled to try and get compensation. He complained to airbnb and they overruled it and made the host take down the review.

ApolloandDaphne · 19/11/2018 08:26

Definitely complain to AirB&B. It sounds like the owner is trying to pull a fast one.

AnotherDIYSunday · 19/11/2018 08:28

I don't think this host is looking for compensation. I'm also an Airbnb host and I think there's a strict time limit (within 48 hours after check-out?) for raising that type of dispute.

PurpleWithRed · 19/11/2018 08:29

That's bizarre, challenge it. If you are an AirB&B regular presumably you will have had good reviews on the past?

I've had a couple of poor experiences when booking a private place via Air BNB and simply won't use that platform again. Far too many amateurs and con merchants using it. Renting out your property is a "proper" business but Air BNB seems full of chancers just wanting to make some money without actually doing things properly nor professionally. You have to remember Air BNB is just a platform to match property owners with people want to rent a property - just like Ebay - they're just offering a website for a commission, and like Ebay, there'd have to be an awful lot of serious complaints for them to take any action against a rogue property owner.

cricketmum84 · 19/11/2018 08:56

No I don't think she is after compensation. We haven't had a bill and there was no mention of payment in the review she left us.

No we don't have any other reviews as this was the first time we had ever used air bnb. I think it's gonna be the last time too!

It's just bizarre!
