To not know what the F our air bnb host is talking about in her review of us???

Ok I'm literally gobsmacked.

Got back a week ago from an air bnb apartment holiday. Before we left I cleaned top to bottom. Stripped beds and put all bedding and towels together for washing, swept, mopped, wiped down showers, sinks, cleaned toilets. The works. DH said I was being over the top but I was conscious that this wasn't the usual big company holiday let and wanted to leave it as we found it. We left a really good review for the owner.

Today received a notification that the owner has left us a review. It's HORRIFIC. It says the apartment was dirty, towels were dirty (not sure how they expect them to be sparkling clean after a 2 week stay and surely they wash them between guests???), she then goes on to say that there was EXCREMENT on the duvet!!! I aired and folded that duvet myself and it was spotless!!! And that there was excrement smeared on the bedroom walls and she has to redecorate!!! Like WTAF???

I have no words right now... I haven't been able to compose a reply as I have nothing to say except WTF? I spent half of my last day of holiday cleaning the apartment.... I think I would have noticed shit stains on the walls??

What do I do?? Can I argue the review with air bnb? I wish now I had taken pictures before we left but it never occurred to me that this could happen??

Dh and I were badly reviewed on our first airbnb. The strange thing was that there were no instructions left on what they expected. Having paid 10% as a cleaning charge I didnt see why we should clean. And also having worked as a chamber maid after uni I would have been delighted to have that room. I stayed in another in Denmark recently and had a lovely review by the host so I think the first one was just a bit bonkers.

CoolGirlsNeverGetAngry · 19/11/2018 12:18

Op has just demonstrated where the baked beans thing came from!

DarlingNikita · 19/11/2018 12:18

I'd contact Airbnb privately rather than respond on the site for now. You could point out that she's left other guests bad reviews and it seems to be a pattern.

CoolGirlsNeverGetAngry · 19/11/2018 12:18

*naked ffs that’ll teach me to be a nobhead.

cricketmum84 · 19/11/2018 12:31

@CoolGirlsNeverGetAngry 😂😂😂

Naked beans, Ginger?!!!

GnomeDePlume · 19/11/2018 12:34

I would wonder if someone else has a key and is using it as a party flat between lets.

ClarabellaCTL · 19/11/2018 12:40

That's really bad OP and you should contest it. I'd just like to add though that we've used AirBnB for a few years now and have always had great experiences. We've stayed in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Hungary. We always leave the house clean but I don't scrub it, that's what you pay cleaning fee for. We wouldn't leave dirty dishes or bins full but I don't go as far as stripping beds or mopping floors. Our hosts have always been helpful and very responsive. I honestly would highly recommend it.

PattiStanger · 19/11/2018 12:51

I haven't used airbnb but surely they have some kind of system for both sides to question a dodgy review - can you not report it?

ciderhouserules · 19/11/2018 12:58

I've used Airbnb all over the place, and never had a bad review left of me - I did leave a carefully worded review of a place in Durham where the cat was on our bed when we got there, had been in the bath (muddy footprints) and wouldn't vacate the room! The door also had no lock or even a catch, the stair carpet was ripped and manky (from the cat) and the breakfast table was covered in cathairs. In fact the entire place was covered in hairs; it's as well we aren't allergic! (It's no longer on Airbnb)
I also stayed in a airbnb for 4 months, and the LL cleaned the place every fortnight, pulling bed and furniture out and beating the rugs.

I use Airbnb for every holiday now. OP I suggest you contact Airbnb itself, as suggested a hundred times already.

cricketmum84 · 19/11/2018 13:51

We will be querying it with air bnb. Just waiting for my DH to get home from work as it was booked through his account.

I still can't believe the things she has said. Bloody nut job.

carrie, baked beans!

Don't know why people are saying contact Airbnb. I can guarantee they will not do anything.

Gingerrogered · 19/11/2018 14:11

Yes, auto correct fail.

cricketmum84 · 19/11/2018 14:16

What was her issue with baked beans??

Reading back through the other responses I think the issue is with the cleaner/host rather than the owner as the owner is based about 200 miles away from the apartment. Whether she is telling the owner that things have been left in a state to get paid more cleaning hours maybe?

OP posts:
Talkinpeece · 19/11/2018 14:57

Contact Airbnb and ask for the review to be removed unless the landlord provides evidence

I have to say I found their support team AMAZING when we had to move out of a place in a hurry. Could not fault them.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/11/2018 15:17

Could well be that the cleaner is saying it is left in a shit state every time so has to do more hours, when in fact she is doing bugger all and raking it in.

I fell foul of a similar scam at a holiday let (not through AirBnB) some years ago, eventually it came out what had been happening but that was too late for me as the incandescent owner rang me, gave me a load of abuse and cancelled my next booking. I never received an apology....bitch.

TeaByTheSeaside · 19/11/2018 15:56

This sort of thing really puts me off using AirBnb. When they're providing a service and you're a paying customer why are THEY reviewing YOU?

Talkinpeece · 19/11/2018 16:04

Tenants review landlords

Landlords review tenants

AirBNB are just the site that puts people together for a fee

Notatallobvious · 19/11/2018 16:14

cricketmum84 do you have email address for the owner? If so I would definitely email them. As PP has suggested maybe the cleaner is trying it on to get paid more cleaning hours. Clearly a CF

Talkinpeece · 19/11/2018 16:16

DO NOT go outside the AirBNB messaging system
send traceable messages through the website as then AirBNB can check what is said

DarlingNikita · 19/11/2018 16:27

I agree, do not contact the host outside the Airbnb system. Keep it above board.

DeezMutts · 19/11/2018 16:37

I’m a cleaner and it’s a pain when people strip the beds! I need to check the linen for marks and rips and it’s much easier to do when the bed is still made even if it’s messy. Plus all the areas you’ve cleaned? We still have to clean them all again so it’s a total waste of your time I’m afraid. Yes clean up and actual mess ie mud on the floor or skidders in the loo but don’t bother otherwise. Enjoy your hol, don’t waste time cleaning.

Gingerrogered · 19/11/2018 16:56

cricket it was pure snobbery. She thought only common people eat baked beans. She mentioned baked beans (in complete outrage) about four or five times in the review in the tones other people would use for accusations of eating human body parts.

My husband is a construction worker, when we arrived his helmet and hi viz hear were visible. As soon as she saw this you could tell she was horrified she'd have to let such an oik over the threshold.

It was at the time of the election last year. tensions were running high. She made it very clear that she viewed us as northern Gammon who were responsible for all the countries woes. And us eating beans proved this. She had a huge Labour poster outside and fancied herself as an anti racist equality campaigner.too

We literally saw her rooting disapprovingly through our recycling, judging what we ate and drank and read, that's how she knew we'd eaten beans.

In reality, me and DH are both graduates. I am a proper genuine posh person, way posher than her, I see her for the hyacinth bucket she is. I would never be so vulgar to treat someone differently because of their class.

My husband is a member of an ethnic minority too, and the job he does which she judged is typical for someone of his ethnicity, so she is racist to boot.

cricketmum84 · 19/11/2018 16:57

@DeezMutts I never even thought about that with the beds! I always strip them, even if we are staying in a hotel!

OP posts:
Talkinpeece · 19/11/2018 17:05

I always strip them, even if we are staying in a hotel!
Please stop doing that.
Hotel cleaners have their own way of doing things.
You are making their job MUCH harder.
Leave the room as you found it is much better all round.
