To not know what the F our air bnb host is talking about in her review of us???

Ok I'm literally gobsmacked.

Got back a week ago from an air bnb apartment holiday. Before we left I cleaned top to bottom. Stripped beds and put all bedding and towels together for washing, swept, mopped, wiped down showers, sinks, cleaned toilets. The works. DH said I was being over the top but I was conscious that this wasn't the usual big company holiday let and wanted to leave it as we found it. We left a really good review for the owner.

Today received a notification that the owner has left us a review. It's HORRIFIC. It says the apartment was dirty, towels were dirty (not sure how they expect them to be sparkling clean after a 2 week stay and surely they wash them between guests???), she then goes on to say that there was EXCREMENT on the duvet!!! I aired and folded that duvet myself and it was spotless!!! And that there was excrement smeared on the bedroom walls and she has to redecorate!!! Like WTAF???

I have no words right now... I haven't been able to compose a reply as I have nothing to say except WTF? I spent half of my last day of holiday cleaning the apartment.... I think I would have noticed shit stains on the walls??

What do I do?? Can I argue the review with air bnb? I wish now I had taken pictures before we left but it never occurred to me that this could happen??

I’m an Air bnb host—she’s a chancer. You can contact Air bnb and open a dispute with them to have the review removed. They are usually on the side of the guest. You won’t have received a bill because all claims go through Air bnb first and they have to review each case to check it’s fair. Without picture evidence there is nothing the host can do and Air bnb will refuse to bill you—she’s just trying it on. For perspective, I opened a dispute with Air bnb after one of my apartments was left with massive burn marks in the carpet presumably from where a guest left a curling iron lying 🙄 Despite picture evidence Air bnb refused my claim and I got no money to fix the carpet. You are fully protected by Air bnb so I wouldn’t stress too much. Your host is either crazy or a cheeky fucker.

csa26 · 19/11/2018 09:57

Contact Airbnb, point out that she's clearly done this before to other guests. They should take her off the platform. Try to get through to the customer services centre based in Ireland, you can usually get good service through them (probably worth phoning rather than emailing).

This really isn't how Airbnb experiences normally are! I've stayed and hosted with Airbnb many times, and my mum runs a proper holiday rental through Airbnb.

Greensleeves · 19/11/2018 09:58

We had a similar experience with an AirBnB host who tried to sting us for £350 for alleged marks on the walls, dirty apartment etc. We wrote a detailed and evidenced rebuttal and never heard any more about it.

I know this stuff happens but it's pretty low and not a nice feeling, when you've made an effort to leave the place better than you found it Sad

Cookit · 19/11/2018 10:02

Please tell me you have replied though? You can’t let this stand against you even if you’ve been put off Air BnB and don’t plan to use again.

cricketmum84 · 19/11/2018 10:06

Haven't replied yet @Cookit - just trying to word it properly. I was too shocked yesterday to write anything that didn't contain 4 letter words!!

Ask them for pictures as proof. If they send any, you can find out certain details, such as when they were taken, and compare this to the date you left. If there’s no proof, request the review to be taken down and chase up with Airbnb if needed.

@Rainbunny it was Spain

Just remembered as well that she had a half empty bookshelf with novels in different languages for guests to read and I kindly added a couple of books that I had read on holiday for other guests. I also refilled the ice cube tray and replaced the last bit of cooking oil we had used with a fresh bottle.

I may as well walk around with MUG painted on my forehead!

They get to review their paying clients!? What a sauce, that's outrageous. They're providing a service not getting a free cleaner. Bloody hell.

gotmybigbootson · 19/11/2018 10:21

I disagree with other posters saying air BnB is awful.

I've stayed in almost 100 different Airbnb's all over the world and only ever had really good experiences.

It's very important to read all of the host reviews and I always try to have a good dialogue with them before I book.

OwlBeThere · 19/11/2018 10:22

My airbnb host tried to say that my children had destroyed her sofa Hmm even though 2 families stayed after us and both said it was fine when they were there, simply because the lady who let us had said my children were 'lively'....it was their first ever holiday abroad, so they were excited, sure. they weren't feral.
weirdo.

ShePoopsAConker · 19/11/2018 10:41

There does seem to be an odd martyrish thing on mumsnet - " when we leave a holiday let we deep clean, take off all the roof tiles and clean each one, launder all the bedding, hire a carpet cleaner and deep clean all carpets" etc. Holiday fun!

:o I really hate cleaning on the morning of leaving a holiday let - it's the last thing you need when you're packing and trying to get the kids ready to travel. And you can't do it any sooner as if you have kids it will get messy again. I don't do a deep clean! But I do a pretty good one. I'm not even big on cleaning in my own home, but I do it out of a sense of duty because I don't want to piss off the owner.

Eliza9917 · 19/11/2018 10:48

I always clean somewhere before we leave, its just common courtesy/decency in my opinion. I always strip the beds because would you like to strip a bed other people have slept on? I always leave towels in a pile with the bedding. I wipe the bathroom & kitchen down and check the fridge for spillages. Sweep the floors. Put furniture where it goes if we moved anything. If it's a caravan holiday we take all rubbish to the bins. If a villa I put the dishwasher on with the last of the stuff we used. Make sure everything is switched off. I've never stayed in an Air B&B though. I suppose I'd leave it decent as well.

Then the cleaner can come in and actually clean, takes barely no time and makes their life easier.

Its the same as getting all your washing up and tidying etc done before you go away so burglars son't think you live like animals GrinGrinGrin

Eliza9917 · 19/11/2018 10:49

*Don't

gotmybigbootson · 19/11/2018 10:52

I leave the dishes washed up and empty bins if asked but pretty much everywhere we stay has a massive fucking cleaning fee so bugger cleaning!

The odd occasion they don't have a cleaning fee it's usually someone's house they've vacated for the stay. Then I make sure I impeccably clean.

JollyAndBright · 19/11/2018 10:54

Don’t let this put you off Airbnb, we use it regularly and have only had two bad experiences for dozens of fantastic ones.

Contact Airbnb customer service, the host sounds like a fruit loop.

I'd been furious if people are naked beams in my house.

gotmybigbootson · 19/11/2018 11:35

Fml. Beans.

SubtitlesOn · 19/11/2018 11:48

Why can't you ask the owner for photographs of the damage?

These should be timed/dated but might be good idea to have the correct days newspaper included in all photos

Then you can see the damage and that it was after you not before

(You would be able to say that you left books and expect them to be in photos)

If you had left damage I would have expected the owner to take photos immediately

constantnamefails · 19/11/2018 11:52

I also really want to know what naked beans are. Do you mean you ate beans whilst in the nud?

NotANotMan · 19/11/2018 11:54

They get to review their paying clients!? What a sauce, that's outrageous

Yes, because Airbnb was set up to be renting rooms in people's homes. As hosts we like to check that guests haven't been dirty, rude or antisocial.

ChodeofChodeHall · 19/11/2018 11:54

She's just trying her luck. A holiday rental place once tried to retain our damages deposit because we had allegedly smeared nail polish over the walls. After a few terse emails were exchanged, they apologised and said there had been a mistake. I got my money back eventually.

cricketmum84 · 19/11/2018 11:56

@Gingerrogered you need to explain the baked beans thing...
