wrong board but the preppers will probably flame me, as you will might for mentioning it on here Grin.
i was wondering if things goes toes up and there are food shortages, what happens with people who can't afford to -hoard- store up goods i.e the elderly and people on very tight budgets already living hand to mouth relying on food banks ?
any thoughts ?

Yes I have some thoughts. Get a grip. We are one of the richest countries in the world and this is the 21st century, of course there will not be food shortages. Project Fear rumbles on.

paintinmyhairAgain · 18/11/2018 12:51

thanks alfie but i've got a very firm grip on reality Smile, i'm not a prepper, but everyone to their own, i was merely asking what other peeps thought about it.

What Alfie said

AgentProvocateur · 18/11/2018 12:53

Also what Alfie said.

GummyGoddess · 18/11/2018 12:54

One could argue we are one of the richest countries in the world due to EU membership.

However much I think Brexit will be a disaster, I don't think there will be starvation. Probably going hungry but I think churches and communities will try and help each other. I'm prepping a little so that I don't have to use up resources that others might need more.

MissionItsPossible · 18/11/2018 12:54

What Alfie said

megletthesecond · 18/11/2018 12:55

The less well off are going to struggle even more if or more likely when the shit hits the fan.
Brexit prices and universal credit are going to be a perfect storm.

MongerTruffle · 18/11/2018 12:55

We are one of the richest countries in the world and this is the 21st century, of course there will not be food shortages.

This country came very close to running out of fuel during the 2000 fuel protests.
When I lived in Norway (again, one of the richest countries in the world), there were very severe food shortages around 2004 because of a lorry drivers' strike.

However, if the deal is implemented (with a transition period), nothing will change (except perhaps a fall in the exchange rates, but that's already happened).

Alfie190 · 18/11/2018 12:57

i was merely asking what other peeps thought about it.

I know you were and I was commenting as requested. :-)

Squeegle · 18/11/2018 12:58

We are a rich country; we have people living in food poverty already. So please don’t patronise us by saying this is doom mongering. Who is looking after the needy? It ain’t the government and that’s for sure.

WitchesHatRim · 18/11/2018 12:58

i was merely asking what other peeps thought about it.

And people have given their answer. I agree with Alfie too.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 18/11/2018 12:59

A million families have already had to use food banks and nothing is being done.
The UN has just condemned our levels of poverty in the fifth richest country in the world, and the government's urgent response has been to deny it completely.

Op, if there are food shortages after Brexit those who cannot afford to eat will have to use food banks until they have all run out. Then they will have to rely on the government recognising the crisis and being prepared to hand out food parcels, which is looking unlikely as their response to crisis and criticism seems to be to deny everything.

WitchesHatRim · 18/11/2018 12:59

Oh and I am a remainer.

homeishere · 18/11/2018 12:59

Well, with 40% of our food coming from the EU and long delays at customs (in the result of a no deal) meaning many tonnes of food decaying in lorries, I think a little bit of prepping is prudent.

I, for one, will ensure I have a reasonable amount of pasta/rice/tins in the cupboard and a freezer full of ready to defrost and reheat meals. I’m not a ‘prepper’ as such, but accept that a short disruption is likely and therefore having a month’s worth of options is prudent.

If you haven’t the space or money to do this then it’s tough really isn’t it? You don’t have many options other than hope Alfie and the other Brexiters are correct and that the grass really is greener on the other side.

Snappymcsnappy · 18/11/2018 13:00

I think we are all fucked!
I am horrified the people were given a vote on something so important in the place and aghast that the government is pressing ahead when it is so blindingly obvious it is a disaster for the country.

Project fear my arse!
Virtually nothing good is produced in Britain...

Nearly all medicines and equipment - abroad
Nearly all food - abroad
Nearly all cars, trains etc - abroad
Nearly all building materials - abroad
Nearly all clothing - abroad

We have a serious poverty problem in this country and all the associated issues with it like ever increasing violent crime, obesity, alcoholism, petty crime, homelessness.

No one can buy a home because we aren’t trusted with a mortgage and people are struggling to pay their rent because there is no loyalty for long term tenants, the rents continue to rise and rise and virtually all our council properties are gone.

The food prices are already starting to rise.
People are already starting to lose their jobs.

And people think we will be okay without the protection of the EU!
🙄

This country is in a diabolical state and it will only get worse.

I just despair.

megletthesecond · 18/11/2018 13:00

We go to pieces over a fuel strike, kfc shortages and a foot of snow.
If there's delayed deliveries and less choice in the shops it ain't going to be fun.

WitchesHatRim · 18/11/2018 13:01

You don’t have many options other than hope Alfie and the other Brexiters are correct

You are assuming which way people voted.

ReflectionsofParadise · 18/11/2018 13:01

Are you hungry OP? Would you like a biscuit? Biscuit

6onTheHappyFarm · 18/11/2018 13:02

squeegle makes a good point. People are already living in food poverty, disruption to the supply chain and services can worsen that. I don't think the whole country will starve, but people are struggling even with things as they are now.

We haven't really prepped if I'm honest. I'll maybe buy a few extra things in in the new year. We have started giving to a foodbank though.

Alfie190 · 18/11/2018 13:03

One could argue we are one of the richest countries in the world due to EU membership.

Well it wouldn't be a strong argument because if you look at some historical GDP tables, you would see that the UK was one of the richest countries in the world long before we joined the EU. For example in 1960, UK was fourth behind US, USSR and West Germany. In fact we slipped a bit in the tables after joining (but not by much).

paintinmyhairAgain · 18/11/2018 13:05

some interesting points, there are people out there that will be very worried about food limitations though, i remember as a child sugar was hard to get for a period in the '70's, people were limited to 2 bags if i remember right and stores were soon sold out, it was really stupid.there was a time the same with bread too.

OP posts:
homeishere · 18/11/2018 13:06

And the world has moved on since the 1960s...

Oh to go back to those halcyon days. Hmm

homeishere · 18/11/2018 13:06

And yes, I am assuming which way people voted. Assumptions that are looking more reasonable as the posters continue to post.

Neolara · 18/11/2018 13:07

For those confidently saying there will be no shortages, do you realise the government are predicting and planning for shortages in the event of a no deal. This isn't the view of a few rabid remainders.
