Gave something away for free, but person now wants petrol money refunded?

I feel like I'm not being unreasonable, but maybe I am?

I put up a pushchair for free on a group (decent brand). Someone asked if it was in good condition and they'd be very grateful to have it. I said yes it's in really good condition (which it is).

However, there's a clip that's on the side (not really a relevant part) that has a crack in it, it's still useable but there is a crack. I didn't think much of it.

Lady messages me saying she has found it has a crack on the clip but I said it was in really good condition, and she couldn't have drove 30 miles for it if I hadn't have said it was in good condition and would now like her petrol money back???

AIBU to say no?

OP posts:

You seriously need to ask on here whether it's right that you refuse to give this woman money on top of the item you've given her for free?!! Lol either I'm going crazy or this shouldn't even be questioned.Tell the cheeky bitch to do one and donate your unwanted items to a charity shop next time.

I don't think OP was in any doubt at all that the grubby chancer valued recipient WBU, but was clearly being altruistic in sharing it with us all to give us a good laugh at her ridiculous behaviour! Does everybody really only ever come on AIBU with an upright sense of justice and morality - and not sometimes for a good laugh at some people's sheer brazen effrontery as well?!

BewareOfDragons · 03/11/2018 11:16

CF

Tell her to bring it back if she can't use it and you'll give her a fiver when she returns it in the condition it left you.

Then report her. You won't see her again.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/11/2018 11:26

I completely agree with all PPs suggesting that she wanted to sell it, but I can't see how this would prevent her from still doing so.

Unless she has a specialist pushchair shop and was hoping to pass it off as brand new (and even then, she could describe it as slightly 'shop-soiled'), if she could otherwise get £200 for it in perfect condition but knocked a fiver or tenner off because of the cracked clip, she's still many quids in as a result of a kind stranger's generosity. She could probably even just unscrew the clip and nobody would ever know.

Some people are just utterly shameless and see other people only as accessories to their own selfish desires - and are then actually angry at those people for their perceived rudeness for only actually effectively giving them £190 for nothing when they would have preferred £200. Additionally, some people will push and push for their own satisfaction as they have no concept of kindness and so assume that people who do show some humanity as stupid mugs who are ripe for the plucking.

I'll bet, if she won £5million on the lottery, she'd still complain bitterly that she wasn't offered her original £2 stake back - and would probably also demand her fee back for parking outside the newsagent to buy the ticket.

If it were me, I'd reply and say it obviously wasn't that big a deal if she only noticed it when she got home - and then add that, although you know that she's a decent person who wouldn't DREAM of trying to sell something that she asked for and got free from a kind stranger who was seeking a good home for it, if she WERE that kind of person, she would still be able to get a very good price for it. Probably water off a duck's back to her, but I still would.

Alternatively, as PPs have said, tell her that, as it's clearly utterly useless to her now, to sell it on eBay, keep her petrol money and the same again for her trouble and then send you the remainder of the cash after the fees. You will not hear from her ever again.

ButchyRestingFace · 03/11/2018 11:28

It's quite possible she doesn't want it with a crack as she was intending to sell it. Maybe I'm just cynical. Ignore her.

This.

She probably only lives around the corner too. Hmm

Aeroflotgirl · 03/11/2018 11:32

I would also deal with local groups, not national free groups.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/11/2018 11:48

"Let's call it five quid for the petrol, yeah? I'll deduct it from the cost of the pram at second hand rates, which is around the two hundred mark" - or whatever the cost actually is - "so if you could get the remaining £195 to me ASAP, that would be great. I'm good with cash or PayPal. Or you could say thank you, stop being such a chancing little cunt and we can forget you ever had the brass neck to contact me about this. Your choice

Ohhhh this ......so very very much this Wink "

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/11/2018 11:48

I give my baby stuff to the HV she collects and gives to client.everyone wins
Astonishing that this woman is getting a freebie and still gurning

UpstartCrow · 03/11/2018 12:04

Put 'sold as seen' on every item from now on.

SaltyPeanut · 03/11/2018 12:38

As often quoted on here, "no", is a complete sentence.
So is, " fuck off".

Yonijust · 03/11/2018 12:41

Ignore her.

namechange9681 · 03/11/2018 12:48

The only time you need to 'disclose' every little detail is when you are selling something.... she sounds like an idiot

namechange9681 · 03/11/2018 12:48

She probably wanted to sell it on tbh!!

RestingBitchFaced · 03/11/2018 14:38

Tell her to piss off!

Frankswife87 · 03/11/2018 14:58

Tell the chancer to jog on ! Shock

ImHudsonHesHicks · 03/11/2018 15:21

I stopped giving away items for free years ago and funnily enough, I admin a freebies site with 9000 members currently. I have seen some serious cheekyfuckery doing that job I tell you.
I live 30 miles from the main city the site is based around and the sheer number of people wanting me to do a 60 mike round trip to deliver the high value free items I was offering was incredible! I of course never did and I gave them away to friends eventually instead.

We have very, very strict rules on selling on donated items. It's a huge no no. Any of that going on gets you blocked from the majority of the local sales sites thanks to admins working together from various pages.

We had one chap who asked people to deliver their items (for free) because he didn't drive. When they arrived, he asked them to carry the items inside (dining table with chairs and boxes of kitchen items) because he was apparently disabled. He even moved his car that was blocking the driveway (so he could drive)
A week later they came across him at a car boot sale flogging everything. There were also loads of items that had been posted on the free site in the past month but he had requested them privately to stay under the admin's radar.

He was on a nice little earner. Turns out he had a table at the boot sales every week full of freebies given to him under false pretences.

Anyhow enough of my story time.

OP, I would tell the CFer that you will refund her petrol money from the money she gave you for that lovely prom.

Don't forget to let admins know what's shit she is trying to pull. Do you have a feedback site for local sales pages too?

Angharad07 · 03/11/2018 15:34

So she wants you to pay her for giving her a pram? What an absolute arse crack. I’d give her a piece of my mind!

Educator66 · 03/11/2018 16:40

Sounds like she plans on selling it for a profit rather than using it ! Anyone using it would not be bothered by such a little thing ! Ignore her - it wasn't a sale and she has no leg to stand on !

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 03/11/2018 16:44

She can buy that clip pretty cheap from a pushchair manufacturer, likely much cheaper than the petrol

She got a free pushchair

Had she spent the petrol money and price of clip in a second hand shop I expect she'd have thought it was an absolute bargain

Just block her

BlancheM · 03/11/2018 17:00

What a clown

Yonijust · 03/11/2018 17:40

Ask for her address, tell her you will drop a new clip round to her, if she pays your petrol.

Not.

See if she bites.

TheSageofOnions · 03/11/2018 17:49

Tell her that it was because of the crack that it was rated "good". If there had been no crack it would have been rated "perfect" or "as new" or similar.

I'd also take legal advice as to whether calling her "a grabby cheeky fucker" is actionable or whether it comes under the heading of non-actionable "vulgar abuse".

TheDowagerCuntess · 03/11/2018 18:20

So basically she wants you to buy your own item (that you don't want) back from her (that she got for free).

Just no.

Alpacanorange · 03/11/2018 18:34

I would take joy in saying of course, return the pushchair and I will refund your petrol, one way. Here you go £3.50

WhatchaMaCalllit · 03/11/2018 18:45

Have you told her you knew there was a crack in the clip at the side before she took ownership of it?

If not, I'd play her at her own game. Say that you gave it to her in very good (but used) condition and you weren't aware of any damage to it before she took it and could she confirm that the crack was there before she took it? You're willing to come and collect the 'damaged' buggy but as there is no way of knowing when/where it got damaged, you will not be refunding her any money for fuel as she got the buggy for free.

She's a definite CF in my eyes.

Ignoramusgiganticus · 03/11/2018 18:52

Ha Ha. That's some brass neck.
