AIBU and overly sensitive or is that fecking rude?

For context - this is someone I met at baby groups years ago (our kids are now mid/late teens), lost touch when they started different schools and occasionally bumped into one another out shopping etc. I recently saw her and invited her back for coffee and a catch up at mine, which took place yesterday.

The first thing she said was "oh my goodness ... you still have the same bathroom, that's hilarious" (bathroom by front door). I had forgotten she was such a rude cow .... things have started coming back to me since our coffee ..... I remember sitting in our garden with several baby group mums, kids in paddling pool, all lovely and she came out with the cracker "I so wish I had a tiny garden and house like this, so much easier to maintain".

I remember now why we lost touch.

I actually love coloured bathroom suites

LinoleumBlownapart · 03/11/2018 20:07

I used to find people like that rude and get upset by their sly little digs.

Now I just feel deeply sorry for them. Their lives are so deeply miserable that they no longer have the skills within them to be polite and nice.

We bought a doer upper( original 1950’s kitchen). But putting new kitchen in dining room and utility in old kitchen. Husbands friends wife came to see and spent 2 mins in old kitchen, as quote” This is so offensive, I have to leave”😳. Bearing in mind they were only just putting in a new kitchen in a house they’d lived in for 16 years! This was the same person, who having a newborn, only had 4 babygrows, and asked me if they felt dry enough to wear( they had been drying on an airer). I asked if she had any more drier, to be told they were Burberry!!

I like the pink and the blue^, the mint isn't too bad either. People buy coloured fridge freezers so I don't think it's that odd.

cheval · 03/11/2018 20:48

Friend’s husband did this (while using my place as a hotel). Commented on how my living room hadn’t changed in 10 years. Why would it? It’s fine. Should have told him to book into a hotel...

canyouhearthedrums · 03/11/2018 20:52

Espresso I have ju st spent the last hour googling coloured bathroom suites. If I ever in my dreams bu y a house it will have a navy suite with a corner bath.

BlueJava · 03/11/2018 21:00

That's very rude and you should probably distance her! However, should you have the misfortune to bump into her and she comes out work similar, pop right back with some about the dangers of over-consumerization on the planet.

Gardengirl33 · 03/11/2018 21:12

If you fancy a giggle, Google the Mitchell and Webb Avocado bathroom sketch!

Don't do it! Every molecule of limescale shows up like tippex. Same applies to burgundy. Go for a pastel.

Nevergiveup1980 · 03/11/2018 22:06

Lock her in there next time nasty bitch & shout “This is hilarious” 🤣

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 04/11/2018 00:44

There are Facebook groups with 100s of people yearning for 'mid-century' furniture including bathrooms. You are soooo on trend OP! Smile

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 04/11/2018 00:57

Cheeky fuck. You’re right op there’s a reason why we loose touch with people

wondering1101 · 04/11/2018 01:01

Ha! Your “friend” would love my bathroom. 22 years old and well and truly knackered Grin. I don’t have the money to do anything about it at the moment though.

Italiangreyhound · 04/11/2018 01:26

Very rude. I would not have bothered answering her, who cares what your bloody bathroom looks like!

MaryDollNesbitt · 04/11/2018 01:28

This has just reminded me. My parents' next door neighbours have just redone their kitchen for the fourth time. The house is thirteen years old. I caught sight of the units going in - they look even crappier than the third set. They've replaced their carpets and bathrooms numerous times too. For everything they've replaced over the years, they honestly could have bought another bloody house in this area. More money than sense. I don't understand it, personally. It's so incredibly wasteful.

Flowers for you, OP. Ignore the nasty witch and just don't see her again.

KC225 · 04/11/2018 01:32

'Oh my goodness you still have the same tactless attitude, that is so not hilarious' mimicking her voice.

TeacupDrama · 04/11/2018 06:08

I think she would have a fit if she came here, we have the same bathroom as when house was built in 1887, it is white, clean and good quality

lovesugarfreejelly63 · 04/11/2018 06:21

Although I have a new white bathroom now, I shed a few tears when my old avocado bathroom suite was consigned to the rubbish dump.

EcruTable · 04/11/2018 06:27

“You’re still emotionally abusive. That’s sad. Now get out of my house.”

toddlepod · 04/11/2018 06:53

I would love an avocado or lemon bathroom suite. Ours is white cast iron and cannot justify the expense or mess to replace it.

Aventurine · 04/11/2018 06:55

Would love to see the 1887 bathroom @TeacupDrama. My house was built at a similar time

TheDodgyDunnyOfDoom · 04/11/2018 06:58

My answer to people like this is, "Why would I want to be a sheep?"

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/11/2018 07:41

She must be one of those sad people whose self esteem depends on having the right/latest bathroom/kitchen/car, etc. They're worried that people will think they can't afford it otherwise. We have a neighbour like this - it's pathetic really - we should pity them but it's impossible if they make stupid or disparaging remarks.

Our bathrooms are both over 30 years old - in very pale peach - with showers over the baths, and shower curtains. Who cares - the showers are v good and there's loads of built in cupboard and surface space to put your toiletries on. We and our many house guests are perfectly happy with them and we have far better uses for the £££££££ it would cost to rip out and replace.

KanielOutis · 04/11/2018 08:34

I don't understand why people replace perfectly good bathrooms and kitchens. We have just had our kitchen done as it fell apart. It cost £12,000. Who has that kind of money to spend every few years?
