"Oh my goodness .... you still have the same bathroom, that's hilarious"

AIBU and overly sensitive or is that fecking rude?

For context - this is someone I met at baby groups years ago (our kids are now mid/late teens), lost touch when they started different schools and occasionally bumped into one another out shopping etc. I recently saw her and invited her back for coffee and a catch up at mine, which took place yesterday.

The first thing she said was "oh my goodness ... you still have the same bathroom, that's hilarious" (bathroom by front door). I had forgotten she was such a rude cow .... things have started coming back to me since our coffee ..... I remember sitting in our garden with several baby group mums, kids in paddling pool, all lovely and she came out with the cracker "I so wish I had a tiny garden and house like this, so much easier to maintain".

I remember now why we lost touch.

YANBU she sounds like some ridiculous TV character. Insulting people's houses seems like a great way to lose friends.

Mookatron · 02/11/2018 11:19

You kind of have to pity this kind of thing. She's a cow and she can't seem to stop herself! If she genuinely finds it hilarious can she possibly have any friends? if she does, what tedious conversations they must have!

BitOutOfPractice · 02/11/2018 11:20

"oh my goodness ... you're still a rude cow, that's hilarious"

TheChampagneGalop · 02/11/2018 11:21

Actually I might have known this type of person myself, but she was more of a fan of insulting other women's clothing and makeup. But only in a friendly helpful way of course!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 02/11/2018 11:21

If she can still remember it after all that time she must really love the design and style.

fuzzyduck1 · 02/11/2018 11:22

Lol we moved into our house last year and the bathroom is form the 70’s ! Brown with pink tiles
And the kitchen is from the 50’s
I did change the shower as that was well past it’s sell by date.
But the bath works you can wash your face and have a poo in comfort.
Don’t know what it is about changing things that ain’t broke.
Guess we’ll have to bring the house into the 21st century soon as may need to sell it at some point and it makes it more sellable to me modern but then the new people will probably rip it out and change it again.

Zoomzoomzoomzoom0 · 02/11/2018 11:24

Wouldn't you just love to say "Right, that's it. Get out, off you go now, and don't come back" and just shove her out the door. She's not trapped by manners, why should you be? Also Philomenabutterfly's suggestion would work nicely Smile

thighofrelief · 02/11/2018 11:26

Oh how sweet of you to remember so much about me when I really did struggle to place you. Are you still married, oh whoops, mustn't gossip!

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 02/11/2018 11:28

Ours was put in in 1984.

I'd rather retire earlier than have a new bathroom.

tiggerkid · 02/11/2018 11:28

She is clearly one of those one uppers, who set out to make others feel bad in order to feel good about themselves. Ignore. Move on and don't invite people whose company you don't enjoy to your house next time. There is a reason why you've not seen them for years and if a catchup is suggested, meet somewhere neutral. That's if you fancy it at all.

EmmaGeddon · 02/11/2018 11:30

"Why on earth would we change the bathroom when there's nothing wrong with it? You're obviously not very environmentally aware are you, old friend?"

I think we've all known people like her, who delight in putting people down, to make themselves feel better.

Satsumaeater · 02/11/2018 11:31

Our kitchen has been in since 1992 when the previous owners built an extension. We moved into the house in 2003 and have lived with their kitchen longer than they did!

IrmaFayLear · 02/11/2018 11:32

If only there were a "pause" button in real life, in order to give one time to think up a marvellously apt and witty riposte. They always come to me in the middle of the night, hours after I've been stewing over some insult.

I'm suspicious OP's "friend" is known to me... I have a friend who loves to use the word "hilarious" when she's criticising something. In fact she even said when visiting our new house, "A corner bath - that's hilarious!" Clearly 80s bathrooms are hysterically funny.

shearwater · 02/11/2018 11:34

The best one was when we had DH's friend and his partner round. We had just had the kitchen fitted, tiled and painted, and his partner asked "So what colour will you be painting it?"

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 02/11/2018 11:35

She's a rude fecker all right.

SOME people don't waste time and money replacing perfectly serviceable units just because some jumped-up twat in a magazine tells them that this year the in-colours are mushroom and chewed string. SOME people have sense (you, OP).

Some people need to be lost touch with again very quickly! Grin

Witchesbritches · 02/11/2018 11:35

PavlovianLunge no, it’s not much different. Someone on here, with a modern beige bathroom, could quite rightly be offended by their bathroom being described as ‘dull’ (mine isn’t beige, so no skin in the game).

Saying you think beige is dull is one thing. Saying ‘mine is white and fresh, not trendy dull brown’ makes a comparison that isn’t very nice IMO. It’s fine if you disagree. (But you might want to look up ‘disingenuous, because my comment wasn’t ‘disingenuous’.)

🤣 mine is a white suite with grey tiles & walls, I know plenty of people here would think that’s boring ‍🤷🏻‍♀️

RomanyRoots · 02/11/2018 11:37

I'd lose touch again, immediately.
What a rude cow.
if she gets in touch again, tell her you have become choosy with friends, and only have time for nice people now.

Knittedfairies · 02/11/2018 11:37

Years ago I knew someone who had a visitor just like yours. She asked if the guest had noticed her new front door; guest said she hadn’t. Host then invited guest to look at the door from the outside.... and shut it when guest stepped outside, and wouldn’t open it again.

Micke · 02/11/2018 11:40

Took me ages to find a bath as good as the 80s peach number we had in our house - I would have happily kept the bathroom were it not for the fact that there were multiple leaks and the tiles were cracked in many places, as was the basin and as frugal as I am, I couldn't run with having toilet and basin in one colour and bath in another.

DarlingNikita · 02/11/2018 11:40

I'll be honest, I'd quite like a corner bath.

In fact I'll come out and say this too: I don't mind avocado bathroom suites.

Witchesbritches · 02/11/2018 11:40

Thumb don’t be giving F&B ideas! I can see their next colour being ‘Chewed string’ 🤣

Micke · 02/11/2018 11:41

oooh fuzzy - does it have the wall cabinets which are deeper at the top than the bottom with the sliding glass doors - my nan had those in her kitchen, and so did a housemate at uni - I think they look lovely.

bloodylovethemoomins · 02/11/2018 11:42

@Knittedfairies that is amazing!
