"Oh my goodness .... you still have the same bathroom, that's hilarious"

AIBU and overly sensitive or is that fecking rude?

For context - this is someone I met at baby groups years ago (our kids are now mid/late teens), lost touch when they started different schools and occasionally bumped into one another out shopping etc. I recently saw her and invited her back for coffee and a catch up at mine, which took place yesterday.

The first thing she said was "oh my goodness ... you still have the same bathroom, that's hilarious" (bathroom by front door). I had forgotten she was such a rude cow .... things have started coming back to me since our coffee ..... I remember sitting in our garden with several baby group mums, kids in paddling pool, all lovely and she came out with the cracker "I so wish I had a tiny garden and house like this, so much easier to maintain".

I remember now why we lost touch.

It’s almost as rude as someone calling a more modern style ‘dull brown’ ‍🤷🏻‍♀️

GabsAlot · 02/11/2018 10:40

ive had the same batghroom for 19 years-nothing wrong with it as in it works-rude cow

tell her she hasnt changed much either

InfiniteVariety · 02/11/2018 10:40

A woman I know who considers herself an expert on everything to do with decorating houses thinks nothing of walking into someone's living room, glancing round and saying, "hmm this room really needs renovating...."

ichifanny · 02/11/2018 10:41

I find a Joe pesci in goodfellas ‘ how’s that funny ?’ With a death stare , works in this situation .

citiesofbismuth · 02/11/2018 10:48

"Oh dear, changing things every few years is so passe dontya know. We'd rather use our money to buy art and do up our farmhouse in France, it's so very draughty you see" Grin

Mosaic123 · 02/11/2018 10:48

The classic Mumsnet phrase "Did you mean to be so rude?" would work well here.

If this kind of thing happens to me I do one of those smiles where only your mouth smiles but not your eyes.

latedecember1963 · 02/11/2018 10:48

The "tiny house and garden" comment has reminded me of my SiL referring to our house as "much too claustrophobic" for her children on one of the very rare 2 hour visits they deigned to make. 😁

Actually it's given DH & I a laugh over the years, especially if we watch Escape to the Country, and potential buyers mutter about small rooms that look huge to us but would obviously be totally unsuitable for our nieces!

Oblomov18 · 02/11/2018 10:48

orrrrffff, that would piss me right off. What a snobby bitch.

thetemptationofchocolate · 02/11/2018 10:51

My fantasy self would say to someone like this "Well isn't it a good thing you will never be invited into my house again then!", while ushering her out of the door.
In reality I would probably be so astounded by her rudeness that I would merely gape at her like a landed fish :)

ciderhouserules · 02/11/2018 10:52

70s nauseated peach, put in when the house was built. It's a really good solid cast iron bath and would cost more than we could reasonably afford to replace you can get them repainted - in fact you can even DIY.

PhilomenaButterfly · 02/11/2018 10:54

"Fuck off, you cunt."

PavlovianLunge · 02/11/2018 10:55

It’s almost as rude as someone calling a more modern style ‘dull brown’ 🤷🏻‍♀️

You’re being disingenuous. There is a world of difference between commenting negatively about a general style trend and criticising someone’s home while you are in it.

GraceMarks · 02/11/2018 10:58

I seriously started to go off a friend when she came round to see my new flat, which I had just redecorated and furnished, and she said "Oh, it's so sweet and tiny!" I got the impression she thought she was being nice, but it was the first of many occasions when she demonstrated her superiority to me because she had just married someone who went to public school and she did all her shopping at Waitrose.

gamerwidow · 02/11/2018 10:59

Who even remembers these details from years ago? I was at my best friends house last week and I couldn’t find her bathroom from a line up if you paid me.

kaytee87 · 02/11/2018 11:01

Don't waste any more time on her

Ariela · 02/11/2018 11:02

Our bathroom is the original came with the house, so hate to think what she'd make of the 'white because coloured ceramic hadn't been invented'. Retro? Vintage? It is dated but looks almost modern other than the fact the suite looks a bit 'aged', the style is now relatively fashionable as retro/vintage.

Ladymargarethall · 02/11/2018 11:05

Someone said to me 'It was an ordinary little house, like yours.' Still rankles, and it was years ago.

woollyheart · 02/11/2018 11:06

Yes, compliment her on her memory.

' What an amazing memory you've got for your age!'

Likeshyt · 02/11/2018 11:07

“Oh I still love it, better than the mundane, over priced, flimsy crap daft people buy today to keep up with the jones’!”

crabapplecrumble · 02/11/2018 11:09

I think you must have been in my baby group OP. Here are a couple of typical comments I remember from one of the women:

When I got a new sofa to replace our 15 year old one: "Gosh, are there really people who keep furniture for that long?"

When I complimented her on her new coat which was very similar to mine: "I just couldn't find anything I liked, so I had to make do with this hideous thing until I find something better".

woollyheart · 02/11/2018 11:10

Or next time try

'Yes, it's wonderful, isn't it! I suppose your children trashed yours?'

brizzledrizzle · 02/11/2018 11:11

What Drspouse said. Far better to be eco-friendlier and keep a perfectly serviceable bathroom suite. We only replaced our bathroom suite recently, before that it was the same one that was in the house when it was built over 50 years ago.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/11/2018 11:15

"My goodness, how do you remember something like that? You need to find a hobby or something?"

Miscible · 02/11/2018 11:15

"Oh, my goodness, you still have the same utterly childish mindset. That's hilarious!"

Jaxhog · 02/11/2018 11:17

"Yes, we find the modern styles rather vulgar dear."

Or, a puzzled "Why would you change a perfeclty good bathroom suite?"
