That a male just won a women’s cycling World Championship?

Can’t really get my mind round this tbh though i was aware of another male Laurel Hubbard taking medals in the Women’s Weight Lifting World Championships earlier this year. Are we really ready for males winning the Women’s Wimbledon Title and the women’s Olympic 100m Final?

But if that was the case M3lon why have segretated men's and women's sports at all? Why have weight divisions in boxing? Why have "senior" categories and age groupings? Why not allow under 11 football teams to field a couple of the dads? Why not allow as much doping as you want and turn it into a contest of whose pharmacists are best? Why not just have one single open competition?

Of course sport is about fairness (among other things) because it would be pretty dull and pointless if you didn't try to make sure that people were matched against their peers.

LittlePearl · 15/10/2018 15:56

M3lon

sport isn't fair though!

The logical extension of that comment is that any sex segregation in sports is pointless, no? Which is plainly ridiculous. There are good reasons why men and women compete in separate categories. The fact that some people have natural talent in some areas of sport and others don't is irrelevant.

Badmoonsarising · 15/10/2018 15:56

McKinnon is campaigning for no restrictions at all for males competing in female sports as long as they id as the required women’s gender on the grounds it unfairly discriminates against some women (transwomen). Interesting article on it - 2 TW champion cyclists - McKinnon and Bearden who are in disagreement on the issue. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/995434001

What I find interesting is that these folks never say 'oh it's so wonderful that I can compete - I feel accepted, thank you for treating me like a woman...the competition was great - the other women are great...' - why is it always 'IN YOUR FACE, BITCHES!' and 'SO WHAT - I HAVE TESTICLES - WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT???'?

noeffingidea · 15/10/2018 15:57

M3lon eh? That is what competition is about, yes.

M3lon · 15/10/2018 15:57

tenbob yes absolutely. The only possible logical standpoints are to either do away with women's categories, or do it based on some sort of biological basis.

That basis can't be anything vague like T level or body shape or lung capacity or anything, because all elite athletes blow the bell curve on those. So the only thing to do is XX. This leaves out a huge bunch of people who don't have XX but who also aren't XY. But sport isn't fair.

There is no reason why someone who identifies as male but is XX can't compete with women (they won't catch cooties honestly!) and why someone who identifies as female can't compete against XY men. Again there are no cooties and tbh many women do that all the time due to a lack of female participation locally.

RyderWhiteSwan · 15/10/2018 15:57

How can this be happening? What can we do about it?
I don't know. I despair, I really do Sad

AnotherCareerThread · 15/10/2018 15:58

I identify with being more of a dog than a human being. Can I compete in the heelwork to music competition in Crufts?
I mean, TECHNICALLY i have a biological advantage, what with having a human brain and all, but I feel like a dog so...

Helmetbymidnight · 15/10/2018 15:59

That’s similar to what this Rachel person is trying to argue. They’re saying- I didn’t always win so I’m not at an advantage really. Confused
Utter fucking nonsense. We’re supposed to just stand aside and let men win everything.

NicoAndTheNiners · 15/10/2018 15:59

It’s a disgrace that this is allowed.

HamiltonCork · 15/10/2018 15:59

Sport isn't fair. Let's start with getting rid of weight categories in boxing. That should level the playing field.

FekkoTheLawyer · 15/10/2018 15:59

I identify with being more of a dog than a human being sorry fido but I don't think you will be much competition on the racetrack.

Ta1kinpeace · 15/10/2018 16:00

A person with a penis is not a woman.

AnotherCareerThread · 15/10/2018 16:00

This leaves out a huge bunch of people who don't have XX but who also aren't XY.

@M3lon I'm pretty certain that you either have XX chromosomes or XY. There is no inbetween. It's either/or.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/10/2018 16:01

they won't catch cooties honestly

Omg did you really just say that? You must think you’re talking to a load of schoolchildren.

AnotherCareerThread · 15/10/2018 16:02

@FekkoTheLawyer But I can jive better than a border collie, which was my point. actually I probably can't but you know what I mean

FermatsTheorem · 15/10/2018 16:02

Which is precisely what Jaiyah Saelua does - plays men's football, and I very much admire her for it:

fernandoanddenise · 15/10/2018 16:03

Question - so is sport self-id? as in all sports? or is it up to individual sports to make the rules clear? Which sports do have restrictions on I wonder?

I'm shocked by the increasing examples of this invasion of female space (intellectual, physical - in the work place, prisons, toilets- and emotional) but what tipped me to peak trans was the 'women in the workplace' award given to a man who spends half the week as a female and half the week in his suit and tie.

FekkoTheLawyer · 15/10/2018 16:03

Do collies Jive? Im not so sure. I thought they were more cha cha cha.

Genevieva · 15/10/2018 16:04

@tenbob exactly! Single sex competitive sport only came into being because our bodies are different, not because our sense of identity is different.

I also find a certain irony in the fact that transgender athletes are allowed to complete while taking a cocktail of drugs to stop facial hair etc, when competitive sports is against any kind of unnecessary medical intervention. When I had my wisdom teeth out I was sharing a recovery room with a female weight lifter. She had just had the same procedure without pain relief because it would have contravened the anti-doping guidelines. This wasn't having a tooth pulled in a dentist's chair. It was hospital-based because it was a complex procedure.

RudeZebra · 15/10/2018 16:04

How can this be happening? What can we do about it?

Women could put a bit more effort in and just get better at cycling?

AnotherCareerThread · 15/10/2018 16:04

@FekkoTheLawyer - they're better than Siberian dogs at least, cause they're not as...husky.

[gets coat]

DragonGoby · 15/10/2018 16:05

@M3lon

I mean I could train every hour of every day and I could never get on that podium - yes, I agree that's true for most of us.

But many girls and women compete in sports at some level - not necessarily professional level - and get an enormous amount of enjoyment from it. Eg schools, clubs etc. It they all have to compete against men, then they'll stop taking part.

Do you support the idea of no girls or women doing competitive sport at any level?

Well, I guess the good thing is that I have another image to print out and stick above my desk to inspire me.

In the old days I used to have pictures of paintings or cartoons. These days its just mad things.
