To ask what people understand the consequences of 'Hard Brexit' are

It's no secret I'm a Remainer but I'm at the point where I think the only option might well be Hard Brexit and live with the consequences to avoid a situation where 'the will of the people' was ignored.

What do people think a No Deal Brexit will entail?

insome
You are making no sense.
Do you think that a Hard Brexit will have no impact on the business decisions of multinationals?

Insomeotheruniverse · 07/10/2018 22:08

ta1k car companies have been moving their plants abroad for decades. What’s not to understand about that?

And Nissan may or may not leave due to brexit. We simply don’t know yet and we’ll soon find out. Nothing hard to understand about that either.

Brexit probably will have an impact on the business decisions of big/small/multinational companies. How big or small that impact is again we will have to wait and see.

bellinisurge · 07/10/2018 22:11

@Insomeotheruniverse - this "wait and see" stuff doesn't add up. With no deal, all legal agreements we have ever entered into STOP. All trading arrangements STOP. How is that a "wait and see; it might be fine" situation?

Insomeotheruniverse · 07/10/2018 22:14

Because Bell it’s unlikely there will be a change from brexit so you have no choice but to wait and see.

bellinisurge · 07/10/2018 22:19

I do have a choice that is an alternative to "wait and see" It's called "get my family Irish Passports; make sure I have a decent store cupboard of shelf stable food and other supplies and take every opportunity to encourage people on here to do the latter if they can't do the former as well".

SemperIdem · 07/10/2018 22:28

I don’t anticipate anything good, not initially, not for a good while after.

KennDodd · 07/10/2018 22:32

I think if we are facing a cliff edge public panic will set in, in the few days before and supermarket shelves will be stripped. Possible rioting, I think the gov would then collapse.

KennDodd · 08/10/2018 08:04

I think if the above happens, this will INCREASE support for Brexit. The tabloids, Brexit politicians and the Tories will be blaming the EU for this, it will be described as a hostile act of an aggressive foreign power, instead of just following international law and WTO rules, and the public will be stupid enough to believe them and also blame the EU.

StealthPolarBear · 08/10/2018 08:11

I think we'll tear up the Belfast agreement.

longwayoff · 08/10/2018 08:16

This is a colossal piece of collective ignorance, stupidity and self aggrandisement perpetrated on the country by spivs, chancers, charlatans and shysters. Equalled only by a lemming migration.

KennDodd · 08/10/2018 08:20

@StealthPolarBear

Unfortunately I think most English people don't give a shit about NI. If they did Brexit wouldn't have happened.

That may be so kendodd but the IRA managed to focus our attention on it pretty effectively. No sane person wants to return to that.

Flyaway78 · 08/10/2018 08:27

Meanwhile back in the real world, on the 1st of April 2019 we will see very little difference and when the hubbub dies down life will carry on as normal.

The denial is incredible.. where do you get your information that allows you to be so cofident?

I work for a global bank and they are preparing for a recession. That’s where I get my information.

MorrisZapp · 08/10/2018 08:29

Can i just ask, if leaving the EU means a return to a hard border in Ireland, what happens if Scotland leave UK and rejoin EU?

Would EU make a hard border a condition of membership?

MorrisZapp · 08/10/2018 08:30

A hard border between Scotland and England I mean.

StealthPolarBear · 08/10/2018 08:30

How are other EU land borders handled

bellinisurge · 08/10/2018 08:40

Other EU borders are handled with border control to start and bilateral agreements eventually between the EU and the 3rd country. There is some sort of customs border process - even a light touch . Which would completely destroy GFA.

Chocolala · 08/10/2018 08:44

Nissan might not leave because of brexit.

Nissan has already paused further investment and is very clear (if you read non British press) that it won’t be commissioning new models here unless there is frictionless movement of goods.

So they won’t up and leave instantly. They’ll just slowly transfer their manufacturing to other eu countries, by commissioning all he new models there. Then winding Sunderland down when the old models ‘expire’. And it will be entirely down to brexit.

StealthPolarBear · 08/10/2018 08:46

I live nearby and have family members who have worked there. This will be a huge disaster for the area. This should never have gone to referendum. We are not clever enough.

KennDodd · 08/10/2018 08:50

Pensioners were the biggest supporters of Brexit, job losses will have a much more limited impact on them so I suspect they care the least about the economy. There has been a very slight shift towards Remain, it would be interesting to see where this has been and if its mostly amongst the working population who are now worried about their jobs.

CaptainBrickbeard · 08/10/2018 08:51

I find the ‘life will carry on as normal and we won’t notice’ attitude to be quite possibly the stupidest thing I’ve encountered so far in over two years of Brexit debate and discussion on these boards. If you don’t think it will make any difference, why have we spent billions of pounds on it already? Labour’s manifesto was roundly derided because they wanted to fund health, education, welfare and public services fairly. But apparently that’s ridiculous and childish to imagine we could have the money to do that. The same idiots though are delighted for billions of pounds to be plucked straight off that magic money tree to fund a Brexit which apparently will change nothing in our lives anyway! Thanks a fucking bunch.

KennDodd · 08/10/2018 08:53

@StealthPolarBear

What is the feeling in Sunderland? Are people still as enthusiastic and confident about Brexit?

StealthPolarBear · 08/10/2018 08:53

Oh hang on but in 2069 we'll all be living the life of riley. Thanks to brexit in 2019. I for one can't wait. My nineties are going to be a ball!
