To ask what people understand the consequences of 'Hard Brexit' are

It's no secret I'm a Remainer but I'm at the point where I think the only option might well be Hard Brexit and live with the consequences to avoid a situation where 'the will of the people' was ignored.

What do people think a No Deal Brexit will entail?

I think people who voted Brexit were either nice and misguided- my family - or thick.

People who still want Brexit- mostly thick.

People who are like uh ‘does it matter what a hard Brexit is’ - thick.

Ta1kinpeace · 07/10/2018 21:18

If there is a hard Brexit and the UK has to trade under WTO rules, it will suddenly discover that 480 faceless bureaucrats in Geneva are not a panacea.

Bearbehind · 07/10/2018 21:20

insome your contribution has been 'Hard Brexit doesn't mean anything to me' but that's not really an 'opinion' is it? 🤔

It's proving my point that making Hard Brexit happen is the only way it's going to sink in.

I’m not anticipating any consequences. I’m waiting to see what happens.

There are plenty of things going wrong in the UK already due to a lack of funding in various areas. I imagine that brexit will be blamed for anything about to go over a cliff edge ie. NHS, car companies moving abroad (which they’ve been slowly doing for decades anyway)...etc.

bellinisurge · 07/10/2018 21:22

How long before Quitlings start blaming Remainers and the EU when it all goes tits up? Shall we start a sweepstake?

Helmetbymidnight · 07/10/2018 21:23

You’re not anticipating any consequences but you anticipate one consequence will be that companies will pretend Brexit has ruined them.

Riiiight.

Insomeotheruniverse · 07/10/2018 21:27

I didn’t say companies will be ruined. Re read my post. I said car companies moving abroad (which they’ve been slowly doing for decades anyway)

bellinisurge · 07/10/2018 21:28

@Insomeotheruniverse - you're not ...., backtracking are you?

Insomeotheruniverse · 07/10/2018 21:30

I think people who voted Brexit were either nice and misguided- my family - or thick. People who still want Brexit- mostly thick. People who are like uh ‘does it matter what a hard Brexit is’ - thick

I disagree with you.

Insomeotheruniverse · 07/10/2018 21:31

bell not at all.

bellinisurge · 07/10/2018 21:32

@Insomeotheruniverse - I think most leave voters were ignorant and the rest were arrogant or deluded. And no one dares admit they made a mistake. So to save people's blushes we are heading off a cliff.

Bearbehind · 07/10/2018 21:33

insome so you have any idea how many people in the UK are employed in the car industry?

Take Sunderland for example.

If Nissan leaves because of Brexit (and they weren't planning to pre-Brexit) what other opportunities are there in that area?

OP posts:
Insomeotheruniverse · 07/10/2018 21:35

bell I totally agree with you that a lot of voters will have been ignorant or arrogant or voted for a whole host of other reasons. The most arrogant act was putting it to a vote in the first place. It should never have happened.

Ta1kinpeace · 07/10/2018 21:36

The most arrogant act was putting it to a vote in the first place. It should never have happened.
So do you agree is should be ignored ?

Helmetbymidnight · 07/10/2018 21:37

I can see what you said.

You don’t want to discuss the consequences of Brexit. They are ‘irrelevant.’ But you do want to suggest that Brexit will be blamed for anything that goes wrong.

Insomeotheruniverse · 07/10/2018 21:38

bear but Nissan might not leave.

Insomeotheruniverse · 07/10/2018 21:40

ta1k I don’t think it can be ignored because so many people voted. It’s something that people feel strongly about.

Ta1kinpeace · 07/10/2018 21:40

Indeed, Nissan might not leave. But its pretty likely that they will because there has been overcapacity in European car manking for decades and the Sunderland plant will instantly become uneconomic if there is a hard Brexit (because of WTO rules)

Helmetbymidnight · 07/10/2018 21:40

My low opinion of brexiteers is ...irrelevant but tbc I have no respect for any of them.

HerondaleDucks · 07/10/2018 21:40

It's not just the NHS that will be deeply affected. The care industry relies heavily on eu care staff who are happy to work for low pay and long hours.
Education will suffer, several of my work based qualifications were paid for by the EU.
I don't understand why they thought there would be a deal in the first place. It completely baffles me that people thought that was a thing. You're either in or out. I don't think uk ever realistically had a choice there, we don't offer enough or produce enough to have power on a trade platform. We trade in ideas and services mostly.
I mean who quits a gym membership for a national company and say oh well I was a member so I should still be able to use the treadmill when I fancy it. I also need to come in and see my neighbour cause they're still a member. It's bonkers!

Ta1kinpeace · 07/10/2018 21:41

I don’t think it can be ignored because so many people voted. It’s something that people feel strongly about.
But it was advisory. The legislation made that clear.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2018 21:48

we will see very little difference and when the hubbub dies down life will carry on as normal

Bloody expensive exercise in nothing then, according to you.

I left already so I'm just watching the car crash slowly from across the street. I'm most worried about an escalation in NI and medication for my elderly father.

lljkk · 07/10/2018 21:48

Toyota, BMW, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover... all talking bad news about Brexit impacts on their UK production lines. Pah.

Honda is in Swindon; Swindon voted 55% for Relinquish.
Toyota is in Derbyshire, Derbysh voted 59.1% for Relinquish.
55.6% Leave vote in Coventry (JLR). But hey, BMW is in Oxford & they voted Remain.

Bearbehind · 07/10/2018 21:50

insome, so which is it

'Nissan might not leave'

Or

'Car companies have been moving abroad for years'

Nissan, and the rest, need access to JIT production which requires frictionless borders - why would they remain in the UK if that's in doubt?

OP posts:
Insomeotheruniverse · 07/10/2018 21:55

Nissan might not leave because of brexit.

And generally car companies have been moving their plants abroad for decades so it’s both.
