To think a second Brexit referendum will not happen

I am a remainer, but people campaigning for a second Referendum are wasting their time. It is not going to happen.

I feel like it won't either despite a lot of people calling for it, not that I know anything whatsoever about anything!

LaurieMarlow · 23/09/2018 22:34

I don't see the point of it, unless it entirely reframed the question.

The only result that would help the country move forward is a strong swing towards remain (like 70/30 in favour). That's unlikely looking at the polls.

If we got a different result (leave winning, remain winning with a small margin) we'd still be in the mess we're in.

No more referendums. Either admit it was all a massive mistake and stay in. Or commit to brexit and seek the least damaging option possible.

LadyMetroland · 23/09/2018 22:37

It cannot happen because legislation would need to be passed in parliament to allow a referendum.

llangennith · 23/09/2018 22:48

Of course it won't happen. If you don't get the result you want from a general election you can't ask for another go. Same for a referendum.

FruitofAutumn · 23/09/2018 22:50

Of course there won't be a second referendum. For arguments sake suppose the remain side won, then the leavers would be justified on demanding a 3rd referendum!
Brexit is happening whether or not we have a deal.It might be a bad thin it might be a good thing. We just don't know.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 23/09/2018 23:34

@llangennith yes you do, every five years.

5Yearplan4000 · 23/09/2018 23:35

Simply isn’t going to happen. So many people on FB just wanting a re run of 2016. Deluded.

AuntieUrsula · 23/09/2018 23:37

Well the last one didn't turn out so well. I'm not at all keen to try that again.

HurricaneFloss · 23/09/2018 23:38

Brexit is happening whether or not we have a deal.It might be a bad thin it might be a good thing. We just don't know

We know that a No Deal Brexit will be a disaster for this country. I'm betting on a General Election before March next year.

scaryteacher · 23/09/2018 23:38

Even if it did happen and the result was to remain, then on what terms? The EU would want us in Schengen, the Euro and fully signed up to further integration. We would also have to up our contribution. Not worth it.

5Yearplan4000 · 23/09/2018 23:40

The question could never be agreed either. Brexit deserves a chance to work or not. If it’s a disaster we can always rejoin the EU. Nothing is forever. But we need to go with it having voted for it.

HurricaneFloss · 23/09/2018 23:41

If we revoked Article 50 before 29th March 2019 we would remain on the terms we have now.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 23/09/2018 23:41

@scaryteacher wouldn't we stay as we are? I heard on the radio once by a politician that we can pull out at any time until we're out despite invoking article 50 and nothing changes.

Mookatron · 23/09/2018 23:42

we can always rejoin the EU.

CAN we? Where's the evidence for that??

SusanWalker · 23/09/2018 23:43

It might happen. If TM either gets a deal but can't get it through parliament or doesn't get a deal it could trigger a crisis where the only way TM can force parliament to accept it is through a referendum. It may be that parliament realises the consequences of the deal or no deal will be so bad they don't want to take responsibility for it and will put it to a referendum so if it's shot afterwards they can blame the electorate.

I think it's unlikely but not impossible. The question will be whether parliament will vote to have remain as one of the options.

idontlikegin · 23/09/2018 23:44

It's very frustrating that the first referendum was quite blatantly unlawful but I don't see another one happening

jasjas1973 · 23/09/2018 23:44

@llangennith
If you don't get the result you want from a general election you can't ask for another go

oh yes you can!
We had a GE in 2015 but May didn't like that result, so called another in 2017, 2 years after the previous one.

Whats the precise difference here? aside that this is a decision for ever or least most of our life times, we need to get it right, there is no reversal in 5 years....or even two.

Seniorschoolmum · 23/09/2018 23:45

I don’t think they’ll risk it. I imagine the options would be remain, chequers deal or no deal. What would constitute a win? 34%, 50%, could result in more uncertainty.

FruitofAutumn · 23/09/2018 23:45

We know that a No Deal Brexit will be a disaster for this country
Do we?

gluteustothemaximus · 23/09/2018 23:46

I don't want a 2nd ref because we can't trust the public with big important decisions.

I never wanted the 1st ref.

Seniorschoolmum · 23/09/2018 23:48

None of us had a crystal ball, so no-one really knows. Economists on both sides have theorised but they all have their flaws.

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 23/09/2018 23:49

I can hope we will have a second one but I actually doubt it.

I’m hoping for the least damaging Brexit possible.

headstone · 23/09/2018 23:51

If we can revoke article 50 that has to be best way of getting us out of this shit. I nearly voted to leave myself but decided remain at the last minute. So many people voted leave without full facts and believed the lies. Now we know it’s going to be a disaster for sure why are we still charging ahead? It’s madness.

Seniorschoolmum · 23/09/2018 23:51

“We can’t trust the public...”

The thing is with 45 million people eligible to vote, you can trust the result to be somewhere to the centre. That’s the whole point of democracy, it produces a consensus.

GretchenFranklin · 23/09/2018 23:54

I imagine the options would be remain, chequers deal or no deal

Why? The Chequers thing is a dead old dog. So it would be No Deal or Remain, surely.

It's been a massive cock-up from the start.
