Racism threads.

Anyone else feel a bit uncomfortable with the spike in threads about racism? I don't mind a healthy debate about racism but many threads recently seem to have brought out the worst in people. Mnhq having to delete numerous comments due to racism. Ignorant or culturally unaware posters writing ridiculous posts that would simply not be accepted in day to day life. People claiming racism when it isn't.

I'm tired of it. Is anyone else tired of it? It's really draining...

Rosetintedglasses454 I know very little about the traveller community, but my concern was that the title and original post cited racism in general. The direction of the subsequent posts highlighted BAME issues, which was what I had noticed on MN and been disturbed by as a woman of colour. However, it bothered me that at one point there was the beginning of a pile-on on Zampa for raising travellers. If the post had said BAME in the title and original paragraph introducing the thread fair enough other groups shouldn't have been mentioned, but it didn't.

Having said that I'm not keen on protecting a group I'm part of from racism and ignoring anti-Semitism, for instance, which is also racism. Since the issue re: the IHRA and Labour there have been some staggeringly anti-Semitic threads on MN.

Dottierichardson · 12/09/2018 14:24

Anti-Racist legislation and policies manage to make provisions for different ethnic groups, is it not possible to imagine a MN provision and stated policy that could act in a similar manner?

SpringSnow · 12/09/2018 14:30

@Zampa The fact that you and @springsnow feel it's appropriate to make the comments that you are making show that racism towards the traveller community is alive and well. Eh? What have i said that's "racist"?

Zampa · 12/09/2018 14:35

And the fact they get special treatment from the police too

If they was referring to black people or Jewish people, would it not be racist either? Or is it just not racist because you're referencing travellers?

Anyway, I don't want to detract from a very important issue. As @Dottierichardson says (and thanks for the support!) MNHQ should be able to address racism in all its forms.

Dottierichardson · 12/09/2018 14:45

And here we have another potential thread for the racist brigade to contribute to (not saying it was started for that reason) but seems many people need very little prompting.

Rather depends on the calibre of the dictionary. I would never have call to use such a term and neither would most people. Language evolves, a word which connotes a considerable passage of time

Its in the Oxford and Collins English Dictionaries. Yours is a clear example of thread derailing that is typical to racism threads. I think MNHQ should delete posts like this that deliberately derail in racism threads.

Nope - all accurate terms to describe the far-left nonsense that used to be accepted without rebuttal, but is now being questioned at last.

Dickybow321 · 12/09/2018 15:21

reee i don't like it so it should be deleted.

Yes I don't like people pretending to be thick to derail a thread.

BertrandRussell · 12/09/2018 15:23

"Nope - all accurate terms to describe the far-left nonsense that used to be accepted without rebuttal, but is now being questioned at last."
Could you give a couple of examples of the far left nonsense?

SpringSnow · 12/09/2018 15:24

Nope - all accurate terms to describe the far-left nonsense that used to be accepted without rebuttal, but is now being questioned at last. - The backlash against cultural Marxism has started.

Time to rise up and take the power back, hey? You poor oppressed white person who haven't been allowed to voice your bigotry and prejudice out loud for sooooo long because of all the nasty mean POC and their allies who don't like to have their sensitive feelings hurt. Never fear Trump and Farage are here to validate your racism and assuage all your POC concerns.

See, this is how threads like this always end up. Derailed and a bit bizarre. Maybe I just don't understand a lot of the mn lingo as I haven't been here for a long time. I simply want mn to address the fact that racism is really quite accepted on their site. That could be against black people, Asian people, travellers etc. I don't care. If it's racism, it should be addressed.

I was simply saying before that in general, racism towards people because of their skin colour and derogatory comments towards travellers because of mess they've left behind, increase in crime etc are two entirely different things (the latter is what we usually see in regards to travelling communities). These are the themes after all that we tend to see on mn.

When it turns in to people jumping on threads and being disrespectful and fuelling hate towards ANY of these communities? That's when it become a minefield. It's so common. I'm just massively drained by it. As I said, I was never so aware of my race online as I have been since I joined mn. I'm young and clearly have a lot to learn but would like to help and at least make a small change.

SpringSnow-could you be more explicit?

RibbonAurora · 12/09/2018 16:03

Springsnow That's a mirror you're looking into and those aren't my sjw tears but your own white ones. See, I'm not the one whining and blowing snot about not being allowed to be open about being a racist twat.

I get it. It must be hard to be on the wrong side of history and fighting a battle that you ultimately can't win.

SpringSnow · 12/09/2018 16:07

@BertrandRussell - Tht great British public isn't being cowed any more.

Zampa · 12/09/2018 16:07

We have to challenge hate and discrimination wherever we see it Cranberri.

I'll carry on challenging people who think all travellers are trespassing thieves who keep slaves and beat their horses and will show solidarity with those who stand up to racists in whatever form they present themselves.

Incidentally, I presume your comment the latter is what we usually see in regards to travelling communities refers to what we see in popular dialogue rather than typical behaviour for travellers.

BertrandRussell · 12/09/2018 16:13

"@BertrandRussell - Tht great British public isn't being cowed any more."
What does that mean?

@Zampa - or undeniable issues reported by impacted communities up and down the country?

The backlash against cultural Marxism has started.

Could you define "great British public" and "cultural Marxism" because I've no clue what you mean by either.

Are they T-Shirt slogans from one of the dodgy groups on FB?

Dickybow321 · 12/09/2018 16:27

Thank you MNHQ for deleting the posts from the person trying to derail the thread Smile.

Cranberri · 12/09/2018 16:40

It's horrific that people still think this is what makes a traveller. Absolutely barmy!

To get back to the point of the thread, as Dottie says at 2.45, there's another weird thread.
