at the Last Night of the Proms? Love the music and general English nuttiness of the concert but really pleased to see so many European flags and hats.

Brexit is happening.

colouringinpro · 08/09/2018 22:49

No YADNBU I noticed it an appreciated it too. Small glimmers of light...

peachgreen · 08/09/2018 22:52

I felt the same way. In fact I think the EU flags just about outnumbered the rest. Made me feel very happy.

Jaimx86 · 08/09/2018 22:58

Husband and I were very pleased to see it too. Have decided to display one on ‘Brexit’ day, which will piss off the neighbours Grin

Prestonsflowers · 08/09/2018 23:04

Yes to see so much “English nuttiness”
So amazing and utterly fantastic
So Fantastic to see how amazingly wonderful England is
Unless you are Welsh, Scottish or from Northern Ireland

MrsFogi · 08/09/2018 23:05

I'm considering hoisting one in the front garden or at least in a few windows at the front of my house.

Itchytights · 08/09/2018 23:09

English nuttiness
What’s that supposed to mean????

Sarahlou63 · 08/09/2018 23:10

@Prestonsflowers - there were simultaneous concerts in Belfast, Colwyn Bay, Glasgow and Hyde Park.

You're kinda missing my point though ;)

Meh, it was a planned protest not some spontaneous outburst of EU love.

LittleLionMansMummy · 08/09/2018 23:13

I love the EU Flag Mafia. Good work guys, much appreciated.

YouTheCat · 08/09/2018 23:13

It wasn't a planned protest at all.

Deadbudgie · 08/09/2018 23:14

I love last night of the proms. Enjoyed all the traditions and explaining them to DS. But I do think it was a bit weird to be waving EU flags whilst singing Rule Britannia!

Catsize · 08/09/2018 23:14

Thought it was a bit pathetic. You lost. Get over it.

Disclaimer - I didn't vote.

Ninoo25 · 08/09/2018 23:14

Jaimx86 I might have to copy you I think 😂

Booop · 08/09/2018 23:16

catsize more fool you.

bellinisurge · 08/09/2018 23:16

@Catsize - not voting in the referendum is something to be ashamed of. You could've stopped it and you didn't.

gendercritter · 08/09/2018 23:17

I loved them. It was so great they were there

Biber · 08/09/2018 23:18

It was the third year EUFM have done this. 20,000 flags were handed oit in Hyde Park and the RAH, plus 500 of the EU berets were handed out in the RAH. It is a celebration of the contribution that being in the EU makes for our music scene.

A wonderful feat of organising and crowdfunding. For a comment on why music supports politics, and how EU membership benefits us, read composer Howard Goodall's piece www.howardgoodall.co.uk/articles-press-etc/20000-eu-flags

Don't think it was either planned or a protest, rather middle England showing a dignified middle finger to the Brexiters.

Brexit is happening

I wouldn't be so sure of that!

Gersemi · 08/09/2018 23:25

I find the Last Night ever more poignant since the Brexit vote. All that celebration of the greatness of Britain when we're about to throw it all down the pan.

BMW6 · 08/09/2018 23:28

I have watched LNOTP for more years than most of you have been alive.

I thought the crowds singing this year was the best ever! Totally brilliant!

I do wonder whether there will be so many EU flags next year - assuming we have actually left the EU by then.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 08/09/2018 23:29

Its almost like Britain is being slowly conquered by a foreign country. I wonder if there is anything we can do?

I for one will be glad to tell my grandchildren I stood up and tried to stop it happening.

Biber · 08/09/2018 23:30

It was planned. Here is the press release.

On Saturday 8th September 2018, the Last Night of the Proms, the greatest annual party in classical music, concludes the summer-long series of promenade concerts staged by the BBC at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The event is traditionally associated with the performance of patriotic tunes and the audience exuberantly waving flags of all nations.

In 2016, following the European Union referendum, a number of prommers were concerned in case the Last Night was hijacked and used as a jingoistic celebration of Brexit. So a group of music lovers crowdfunded a large quantity of EU flags to be waved alongside the Union Jack. We were keen to demonstrate that it is possible to be patriotically British at the same time as maintaining a European and internationalist identity. We raised £1,175 from 60 supporters in just 28 days, and our flags were enthusiastically welcomed by the Last Night audience. In 2017, we more than doubled our £2,000 target, raising £4,218 from 248 supporters.
So this afternoon, for the third year running, the EU Flags Proms Team will be at the Royal Albert Hall, handing out 20,000 free EU flags to members of the Last Night of the Proms audience.

Next year we will be partying and celebrating the UK coming to its senses.
