To be disgusted by this crowdfunder

Alex Salmond has launched a crowdfunder to fund his judicial review as he stands accused of sexual crimes against two women.

The man is a millionaire.

In 24 hours his cult like followers have given him £50,000. I don’t know what’s worse. People who can’t afford it donating money to a millionaire celebrity, or to an accused sex offender.

His party politics aside he like most other Scottish career politicians are entitled arrogant sods, He isn't the first politician here recently who has made allegations of sexual misconduct all about him, It is wrong he is using a cult like personna to wriggle out of these allegations and more worryingly he was talking of suing for slander defamation, so now not only do sex assault victims have to worry about actually being believed but that the they could potentially be suyes for reporting sex crimes.

BakedBeans47 · 30/08/2018 09:02

Oh, and the reason the complaints relating to 2013 were only made in January 2018 was because NS called for an internal review of the Scottish Government's complaint procedures AFTER Harvey Weinstein, and allegations in the UK parliament. It is possible that the complaints were made much earlier, but procedures were not in place to follow up properly.

Also can you imagine the furore if the allegations were public before the referendum? The nats would have gone into meltdown

AlmaGeddon · 30/08/2018 09:02

I would wait to see what the results of the investigations are - not too sure why everyone hates him so much. He lived in my village for a while, seemed an ok bloke, unless the accusations are upheld then he isn't an okbloke.

BakedBeans47 · 30/08/2018 09:05

not too sure why everyone hates him so much

I can’t speak for anyone else but I think he’s an odious man who’s fuelled hatred and division in Scotland for nothing more than his own self interest

I agree four dragons. The whole independence campaign seemed to me to be about him

BabySharkDooDooDooDoo · 30/08/2018 09:09

Ive saw the crowdfunder and was a bit funny about it but if people want to donate thats their lookout. I do believe in innocent until proven guilty

CoolCarrie · 30/08/2018 09:10

He is an arse, can’t stand him, but still innocent until proved guilty, as we should all be.

Bestseller · 30/08/2018 09:12

How does crowd funding work? Is there any "audit"? What happens to the money if, say, he raises more than he needs or decides not to go ahead with the case?

cobwebsinthebelfry · 30/08/2018 09:19

Donations aren't being made because of the man's guilt or innocence, they are because of what some people think he stands for. I suppose friend Harvey might have tried this if his bank balance hadn't been so obvious to the world.

I'm saddened that our laws don't prevent this kind of cheeky fuckery abuse of the system by our deeply disappointing politicians.

CoolCarrie · 30/08/2018 09:20

He says any money left over will go to “good causes”
Sturgeon and him have wasted too much time and money on independence, and she will keep going until she gets the result she wants.

Lucy001 · 30/08/2018 09:35

It seems to me that the real issue is the fact that we live in a society that expects everyone else to pay for things for us, no matter who or what we are. Once upon a time, there'd be the occasional collection or whip round for a (usually) tragic case. Now everyone crowdfunds for everything. Want your bills paid - see if someone else will pay them. If you or I can launch an appeal for money to fund whatever we want, regardless of who he is or what he is accused of, why shouldn't he?

DarlingNikita · 30/08/2018 09:36

It is breathtaking. I have to say, I have to (grudgingly) admire the man's sheer chutzpah.

DancingDot · 30/08/2018 09:44

SO many issues with this thread....

Fraying · 30/08/2018 09:46

Actually I'm disgusted with the Daily Record for continually running leaked details of the harrassment/assaults. I think their approach and coverage will deter women from coming forwards. It's supposed to be a confidential process and they have leaked enough details for the women to be identified.
I'm sickened by the sheer hypocrisy of the media pretending to be championing women whilst making it clear they will jeopardise due process and the victims' anonymity in the hope of gaining a scoop.

I agree that AS should not be crowdfunding his legal action. However I don't disagree with the legal action. Yes he is a powerful and wealthy man and thus has at his disposal not only money but the ear of the media and the nation. This legal action is about making "innocent until proven guilty" actually mean something and that is important for all of us - not just men. If your son was accused of a crime (particularly a sexual crime) would you want his name released before even he knew exactly what he was being accused of? Look at the responses on this thread.... he is vile....he is smarmy....wouldn't surprise me if he was guilty....etc. Now translate late into what women have been fighting for years ...she's puts it around a bit....she looks like a goer..... We can not presume someone's guilt or innocence based on your politic beliefs or whether you like or don't like someone's face.

DancingDot · 30/08/2018 09:54

I agree with Fraying the leakage of his name and the media furore over all of this will absolutely deter women from coming forward with allegations in the future and jeopardise due process.

Oh and the anti-Scottish sentiment on this thread is predictable and pathetic.

Passthebubbly · 30/08/2018 09:57

I have had to deal with this man several times through work - trust me would not be in the least bit surprised if these allegations are true. Reporters have been trying to break this story and many others for years and I expect a lot more to come out

NewGrandad · 30/08/2018 09:59

Spot on @DancingDot

Fraying · 30/08/2018 10:09

passthe I met him many times through work and have heard no stories like this. Does that make my anecdote more or less valuable than you'rs? Hmm
This is exactly the problem. People turning an assault/harrassment allegation into rumours/innuendo and gossip.
The only people damaged by this are women. Women who are trying to use an official, confidential and legal process to raise concerns but who have been thrown under the bus by journalists and politicians with their own agendas.

IrishDadof2 · 30/08/2018 10:09

Anytime I've seen this man, he always comes across as genuine and honest. I believe him.

DancingDot · 30/08/2018 10:11

If the allegations are proven to be true then newspapers should report - until then they should not. Interesting that the BBC has been tripping over itself to cover this story and yet there has not been a peep about about the Green Party Election Manager who has been sentenced to 22 YEARS for the rape and torture of a 10 year old girl.

Rebecca36 · 30/08/2018 10:15

I don't know what to think.

If he is proved innocent there's no reason why he should have had to fund his own legal fees. Being a millionaire (I didn't know that btw) is irrelevant. That's probably the sort of statement he is trying to make by launching the crowdfunder, absolute confidence in his own innocence.

We'll have to wait and see what happens. I'd certainly like him to be innocent but nothing surprises me nowadays.

Passthebubbly · 30/08/2018 10:18

Fraying .... absolutely not and I fully support innocent until proven guilty and am only giving my experience in dealing with the man. As this shows always 2 sides to every story
