To be disgusted by this crowdfunder

Spinderelle · 30/08/2018 05:46

Alex Salmond has launched a crowdfunder to fund his judicial review as he stands accused of sexual crimes against two women.

The man is a millionaire.

In 24 hours his cult like followers have given him £50,000. I don’t know what’s worse. People who can’t afford it donating money to a millionaire celebrity, or to an accused sex offender.

I'm Scottish. Stay in Scotland. The donations will have been made by SNP sheep who think the SNP can do no wrong. I'm demented with them and you'd think there's no other point of view north of the border. Alex Salmond? Vile man.

thebeesknees123 · 30/08/2018 07:16

I wouldn't contribute just in case he might have done it. It is a sex crime and find it distasteful he is fundraising for it. It has nothing to do with Scotland's cause

PolkerrisBeach · 30/08/2018 07:18

What does suprise me is that people are actually contributing in this volume.

If you lived in Scotland you wouldn't be surprised. To the hardcore independence fan, Alex Salmond is god-like. He's the man who delivered the dream of the independence referendum, only to have it wickedly snatched away by those nasty people in Westminster. (Conveniently forgetting he lost the vote). He can do no wrong. He's a total hero to them. Those comments clearly show that those sort of supporters believe that the allegations are designed to damage the indepdence idea as a whole by attacking the SNP. A conspiracy, if you like.

You can't argue with that sort of thinking as it's so irrational. And yes, totally ignores the people who made the allegations in hte first place.

Twotailed · 30/08/2018 07:20

Alex Salmond earns £2k per week for his newspaper column, and charges £1k per HOUR for extra-parliamentary work like public appearances and speeches. He can fund his own costs.

And again, he isn’t funding his defence. He is BRINGING this legal action as a challenge to the government because he disagrees with their processes for handling accusations of sexual misconduct. This action has nothing to do with his guilt or innocence. It’s a wealthy, privileged man using his wealth and privilege to say he doesn’t like the way he is being investigated.

Wealthy, powerful men have a lot of tools at their disposal to suppress the women who accuse them of sexual assault.

annie "OTOH he IS Scottish"

Can you expand on this?

Fourscoreandtwitter · 30/08/2018 07:28

Whilst I fully agree with the unease about the water muddying situation and am not an Alex Salmond fan in any way my concern is that these sort of accusations could be used as a tool to oust unwanted politicians without any sort of basis. A situation that utterly devalues and puts at risk claims made by real victims of sexual assault/misconduct.

There is already an assumption on here that these women are telling the truth and he is a lying bastard when we know nothing at all about the facts of the case. I have been sexually harassed at work before and I know how easily it happens, I don’t think anyone who makes a claim should be immediately disbelieved but equally if every woman who makes a claim is immediately believed and the person accused is vilified then I have no doubt that men (and women) will exploit the culture into using it for their own ends ie getting rid of an unwanted rival. I’m not expressing myself well but our judicial system is rightly based on an innocent until guilty basis and I do believe that is the way it should be.

Yes, I'd like you to expand too. A dig at Scots perchance?

deepsea · 30/08/2018 07:30

He should be paying for his own legal fees int he same way everyone else will have to. What a total shameful disgrace.

Jbck · 30/08/2018 07:33

It is the first time I have ever agreed with Sturgeon's comments on anything, loathe them all.

It's ok Annie the people funding the man are Scottish so we can't all be tight.

Twotailed · 30/08/2018 07:36

It’s worth remembering that false rape / sexual assault accusations are vanishingly rare, and that there is no evidence that people are using fake accusations as a means of political sabotage.

And in any case - no determination on Salmond’s guilt or innocence has been made due to his bringing this legal challenge to the investigation into his conduct. The only reason he isn’t facing these accusations and being proven innocent (if he is) is because he is challenging the investigation.

the scotch

As I said to MIL when she referred to me as "Scotch" ...

Scotch Eggs. Scotch Mist. Scotch Whisky. Scotch Corner.

SCOTTISH people, not "Scotch".

MinecraftHolmes · 30/08/2018 07:41

I wouldn’t be so quick to bang on about the “hard of thinking” when it’s the judicial review he’s brought forward that he’s raising money for, and not his defence against the allegations.

Jbck · 30/08/2018 07:44

👏 @Polkerris

Sittinonthefloor · 30/08/2018 07:46

I once attended an event that many senior politicians, current and past, royal family, vsenior military, etc attended. It was a serious event in a church, every single person sat and quietly spoke to those next to them while we waited for the start. One man out of a couple of 1000 remained standing, loudly talking to different people and 'networking'. I formed my opinion of salmond then - thinks he's pretty much the most important person in the country.

Sadly I have had the misfortune of meeting this slug of a man, did not like him during the referendum and he certainly has not gone up in my estimation. He was all about the glitz and the glamour during the referendum could not care less about the people.

Yes.

Aeroflotgirl · 30/08/2018 07:56

Any CF can use Gofundme or Crowdfunding to chance their arm unfortunately.

Twotailed · 30/08/2018 07:58

Why should he be out of pocket for this?

You mean why should he be out of pocket for the legal proceedings he is choosing to bring...?

Clearly there are plenty of people who have formed their opinion on this without actually knowing anything about it.

RJnomore1 · 30/08/2018 08:04

The arrogance of the man is unbelievable.

lightonthewater · 30/08/2018 08:05

That's just disgusting. When so many ordinary people can't afford basic legal help, it's insulting.

Bestseller · 30/08/2018 08:05

I think it's more a out the political point than the actual cash. He wants to point out the flaws(from his pov) in a system that allows him to be named before anything has been proven against him.

We know powerful men can behave atrociously towards women but there have also been too many cases where malicious accusations are made. Unfortunately "I believe you" has backfired but creating support for people like AS. I agree, I also would be completely unsurprised if he is guilty but he still need to have (and be seen to have) a fair trial. It appears lots of people want to contribute to that.

Raglansleeve · 30/08/2018 08:07

I have to say although I am no fan of AS (understatement) I was a bit surprised by the allegations - if only because he is such a wily politician I couldn't understand him behaving in this manner and risk his political status and fan base (although the fan base would appear to be willing to forgive him anything).

The comments on the crowdfunding page are all a bit 'No true Scot' .

Never thought I'd say this, but I admire NS for her response - she is in a difficult position.
