Getting married in jeans and a t shirt

I hear this all the time...people saying along the lines of they would be happy to gondown the registry office in jeans and a t shirt....has anyone ever done this or not worn a transitional wedding dress??
Had a very small casual wedding??

I love the idea of it but have never actually come across anyone who has had a proper low key wedding

No but with hindsight I'd have been happier with a much simpler wedding rather than a big traditional affair.

NinetySixer · 29/07/2018 08:37

I don’t know anyone who has. I saw it more of a turn of phrase to highlight that it’s the marriage people want and not the wedding.

If I didn’t want a big hoo-ha I would view it in the same light as going to court and dress smartly.

Branleuse · 29/07/2018 08:38

Loads of people say it but wouldnt do it themselves.

MuddyForestWalks · 29/07/2018 08:40

An acquaintance got married in wellies first thing in the morning then went to work.

When I worked at a registry office there was a small handful of jeans weddings, and a larger handful of smarter but tiny weddings.

You won't know about them as a natural consequence of the type of wedding. One that only has 4 guests won't be discussed in the way a wedding with 80 guests is.

Deshasafraisy · 29/07/2018 08:40

I did it. Tiny wedding. No fuss. Wore a dress I already owned that I flung on that morning without any thought. It was brilliant and suited us fine.

OurMiracle1106 · 29/07/2018 08:41

I wore a skirt suit and my (now ex) husband wore a suit. 2 family members 2 friends and that was it. For us it was about the marriage not the ceremony.

Helloisitteaurlookingfor · 29/07/2018 08:41

Yes, my sister did. She got married in a shirt and jeans and so did her partner.

dudsville · 29/07/2018 08:41

I know lots of people who have, but they live in a hotter, poorer place where is also more common. I prefer this. I absolutely loathe traditional weddings and much prefer the casual affair with maybe a meal in a restaurant or a garden bbq straight after instead of the day long event and cheesy disco and weird food and strange dresses, etc.

MyFavouritePlace · 29/07/2018 08:41

Ex colleague and his wife wore football shirts, apparently. Never saw any photos so don't if it's true.

TheRealHousewife · 29/07/2018 08:42

No I’ve never known anyone get married in jeans and tshirt. Like a pp said, it’s said to make a statement about it’s a marriage people want, not the wedding.

I had a tiny wedding, weekday afternoon, just family. I didn't even have invitations. Bought a dress from EBay and had a friend do my hair. It was lovely Grin I got very drunk and danced around a friends house (where 'reception' was) then got a taxi home with hubby Smile

I've been to a Quaker wedding and people just wore ordinary clothes - smart casual. Bride was in slacks & nice blouse; groom in an open necked shirt.

There was also no set order of service - the couple made up their own vows and the guests stood up and made a contribution. It was lovely!

fourplusonemore · 29/07/2018 08:43

I did. We went to Vegas and got married about three hours after arriving at 11pm. My husband wore jeans and a black tshirt and I wore a long purple patterned kaftan. Just us. We ate pancakes at Denny's across the street after and rode fairground rides at the top of our hotel.

We'd been together eight years before that, two kids and decided that a wedding at home would be more hassle than it was worth. Never regretted it.

pinkmagic1 · 29/07/2018 08:44

I eloped as a teenager and got married in a registry office in jeans and one of dh's shirts! We just had 2 people as witnesses.

OwlinaTree · 29/07/2018 08:45

Sister got married just her and partner and two witnesses from the street! She wore a dress she already had though, not jeans.

Buster72 · 29/07/2018 08:46

A rainy Thursday morning at the registrar. 4 guests, two of them our children.
Wedding dress ordered off eBay.
Old suit for the groom.
Pub lunch after....

MuddyForestWalks · 29/07/2018 08:47

All this 'it's about the marriage for me, not the ceremony' stuff that people come out with is patronising in the extreme. Getting married was, for me, a once in a lifetime huge event and it doesn't seem disproportionate to make a bit of a fuss and have my family and friends there to celebrate.

Subtlecheese · 29/07/2018 08:49

I have been asked to be a witness as a stranger at a registry office three times (I worked for the same council nearby and was known to part time and happy to help). I would also see a lot of weddings from my computer at work. A few informal ones. Most people would wear something like work smart as a minimum though. Save the money for a honeymoon! It was certainly where we spent most of our wedding budget.

bonitabonita · 29/07/2018 08:49

Yes I did! DH wore a tracksuit and I wore a sun dress that I'd bought on a market stall. Then we went for a pub lunch and then home. It was lovely.

IceCreamFace · 29/07/2018 08:52

Not jeans and a T-shirt but a dress I bought for about £5 in the sale (can't even remember where from - wasn't a wedding dress). Went out for a meal afterwards. Had 5 guests. We loved it. I would have hated the big ceremony and I'm not a fan of the really posed wedding photos (no offence to anyone who has them it's just my personal taste). No regrets!

KittyHawke80 · 29/07/2018 08:53

I’ve known three couples get married in jeans and t-shirt, one the parents of my best friend. It’s not just a throwaway phrase to suggest the low-key nature of the selected ceremony.

fifipop185 · 29/07/2018 08:53

My friend did, her and her now DH wore every day jeans and t shirt and trainers.

The wedding was planned after years of being together and they wanted to spend the money on a big family holiday to Florida instead.

I was a witness along with the grooms mate. No photos were taken as they didn't want any, there was no fuss, not even confetti.

After the ceremony they went to the supermarket and then did the school run. It was perfect for them and quite refreshing to see.

SinglePringle · 29/07/2018 08:53

Friends of mine did this. She was going to wear a pair of jeans till her best mate (and witness) persuaded her to wear a pair of trousers she got that morning in the sale.

They went to the pub for a meal afterwards then home to collect their daughter from school.

Happily married 15 years later.

SuitedandBooted · 29/07/2018 08:53

We had 2 friends as witnesses, and I borrowed a nice dress.

We lived across the road from the Registry Office, and afterwards, went further down the road to a pub! We're not poor, - just didn't want all the fuss and nonsense.

SinglePringle · 29/07/2018 08:54

(And it was just them and their 2 best mates as witnesses).
