To be upset that the NHS 'pay raise' has cost me a grand?!

Just this.

My pay is £86 down this month. That's £1,032 a year. What a lovely reward for a decade of service.

I'm glad I voted no. Sorry NHS staff hate to strike.

Tell me about it. Didn't quite put the message across that we'd actually be taken back an increment did they.... Really put the cherry on top at the end of my night shift this morning (3 in a row, no breaks, possibly one or two urinary voids in that time....) 😑

RhiWrites · 26/07/2018 16:36

I don’t understand this. Can someone explain?

Undercoverbanana · 26/07/2018 16:37

I’m not NHS. Please could you explain how you are worse off?

Boredboredboredboredbored · 26/07/2018 16:39

Bloody hell thats terrible!! I'm too band 7 and definitely saw an increase in mine this month. I'd be fuming too!!

RaininSummer · 26/07/2018 16:40

Can someone explain for non nhs staff please.

AgathaMystery · 26/07/2018 16:40

NHS pay is banded. Most admin & Porter staff are bands 2-4.

Nurses & MW start on band 5. Within each band are pay points. Each point (we call it increment) is worth about £800 & you get a point each year as a recognition of experience.

So within 10 yrs of qualifying you would be a top 5 or a top 6 if you're a midwife.

There is crossover within the bands. So a top 5 is the same as a mid bottom 6. If you google NHS Agenda for Change you will see all our salaries on a big table. It's very easy to use.

The new pay deal has removed the increment within the banding for some staff. So I am not worth what I was last week.

I'm a grand total of £26/ month better off. Woo. Not.
At least mine has gone up I guess.

JellyBaby666 · 26/07/2018 16:41

@AgathaMystery it's not just that NHS staff don't like to strike but we have a duty of a care (I was a midwife) and so it's a bit more tricky than train drivers striking, for example. Nurses, physios, etc couldn't just walk out on their ill, sometimes dying, patients & midwives couldn't just leave a birthing woman.

However, I wish we could blooming strike. Or at least 'work to rule' Angry

I note than Band 8's & 9's have a nice juicy payrise... Hmm

Undercoverbanana · 26/07/2018 16:42

Your union have approved this??????

AgathaMystery · 26/07/2018 16:45

Jelly I am a MW union steward & trust me, I've never met a more politically apathetic bunch of humans than midwives.

They talk the talk but it comes to nothing. I say this with 8yrs steward experience in the NHS. Many years ago when we did strike I was one of 7 staff (mw) in my unit to stand on the picket.

I give up.

Typical bloody Tories. Give with one hand and take with the other.

aintnothinbutagstring · 26/07/2018 16:50

Very sneaky, its how a lot of private companies dish out so called pay rises. "Oh yeah we'll increase the hourly rate by this amount, impressive huh, but by the way you're now on unpaid breaks, reduced night shift premium, no sunday premium etc etc."

JellyBaby666 · 26/07/2018 16:53

@ Agatha see now that's interesting, as some of the most politically minded people I know are MW's! It all varies doesn't it. I think there is a lot of fear around taking action/standing up. I'm sure the phrase 'tall poppies get their heads chopped off' was born in maternity services.

To answer your question, YANBU to be annoyed about this. If I hadn't run screaming/crying from the NHS I'd be even more fuming. The RCN apologized for misleading members, have the RCM said anything?

It's just disgusting.

Deshasafraisy · 26/07/2018 16:56

This is terrible. I know that nhs staff can’t strike - the rest of us should strike for you. We all need you!

4men1lady · 26/07/2018 16:58

Wtf? I’m band 5..5 years qualified. I’ve had the pay rise in this months wage but don’t know anything about loosing an increment. How do I find out if I’ve lost the increment.

missyB1 · 26/07/2018 16:58

Im not in the least bit surprised, the whole thing has been a PR stunt.

User183737 · 26/07/2018 16:59

Thats shit. No wonder people leave in droves

Angeleshill · 26/07/2018 16:59

That is sneaky. I had no idea.

rubblesbubbles · 26/07/2018 17:00

I am A very part time band 5 who can barely afford to go to work as it with childcare and it's taken me into the next pension contribution bracket so I am now £35 worse off this month as had to pay backdated extra pension!! FFS

TheSconeOfStone · 26/07/2018 17:00

This has just happened to me too. 18 years NHS experience, I’m in a very niche role in which I have a huge amount of knowledge. What an insult. Increasing workload, increasing efficiency rewarded by a cut in pay.

NicoAndTheNiners · 26/07/2018 17:00

Rcm haven’t said anything yet.

I only do bank work, am top of band 6. Haven’t worked out if I will be better or worse off.

AgathaMystery · 26/07/2018 17:01

Jelly I agree, MW are very 'politically minded' but all they do is talk. And talk. And talk. They don't actually do.

Contrary to common misconception we can strike and a few years ago we did strike. Bugger all good it did us too.

Just finished my final phone call with payroll. My NI contributions have gone up too. Hahahahahahahahahahaha.

Pass the ginGin

OP posts:
AgathaMystery · 26/07/2018 17:02

Scone exact same here. I am highly specialised. No one in my Trust or even in my region had the level of experience I have in my role. I am literally the only person doing my job.

I despair. I don't want to leave but can't see how I can stay.

OP posts:
pointythings · 26/07/2018 17:04

I'm top of band 5 and am a little bit better off - but with no increments to work towards, my future pay rises for the next 2 years will be back at around the 1% mark. Yep, the NHS has been royally shafted by the Tories again.

blueangel1 · 26/07/2018 17:08

I spent 25 years in the NHS and was a UNISON rep for nearly 20 of those. It makes me sad and angry in equal measure to see how people are being shafted.
