But don't they trap the heat? I'm seeing women in skintight black leggings when it's 29°c and I'm struggling in a cotton dress! It's not a secret uniform, is it?????

TinyPaws · 24/07/2018 09:56

Could they be uniformed workers? My workplace stipulates that uniform must be covered when not actually in work (even if you're just walking from the car park to the main building. A little jacket doesn't cover it properly, you need a big coat.

Clionba · 24/07/2018 09:58

But why do you have to cover your uniform? Is it an embarrassing job? If it can't be seen, why don't people get changed?

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 24/07/2018 09:58

I saw a lady on the train last night wearing a coat too. My only feasible explanation was she must have had Avery early start to her day, it was possibly cool when she left home.

About two weeks ago I was at a function and several people arrived wearing coats and melting. It was an afternoon function and I’m good with the heat but even I felt a bit sick, seeing people in big coats just made me feel ill.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 24/07/2018 10:00

They really don't. You feel like you're not wearing them. They have to be soft cotton ones though.

Clionba · 24/07/2018 10:01

Not skintight, I'm guessing?

OkMaybeNot · 24/07/2018 10:01

I'm hotter in a cotton dress than I am in cotton leggings and a floaty top or a vest.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 24/07/2018 12:39

Yes skintight. But like brushed cotton almost. Just really soft. Normal leggings but the non see through ones

Gwenhwyfar · 24/07/2018 22:35

"Secret uniforms??
SS?
NKVD?
Mossad?"

Ha ha. The long black coats do sound a bit sinister. A few of us have asked now, but still no answer about the secret uniforms!

FizzyWizzyFlash · 24/07/2018 22:40

They weren't wearing coats. The heat is getting to you and causing you to hallucinate.

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/07/2018 22:42

Well that's because they're secret of course. Jeez. Grin

bychoiceornot · 24/07/2018 22:50

I can't speak for anyone else and their 'secret uniforms' but for me as a community nurse, it's a Trust policy, unfortunately. Unless walking from the car to the patient's front door and back again, we must have our uniform covered (e.g. if popping into a shop to grab a bottle of water).

My boss gives me three reasons for this; one is infection control, as an extra barrier between your uniform and the outside world, although there are always lots of debates about this. Second is so that if you do something inappropriate when in public in uniform, you are less likely to bring disrepute upon the Trust.. The third is for the protection of nurses... a visible uniform can be seen as a concern by the higher ups, as it can suggest that you are carrying drugs or syringes/needles in your bag or car and therefore at risk.

We do get odd looks when on lunch break and getting out of a car into the hot air then putting a jacket ON! Patients get very worried too if we have to walk any great distance from car to front door and therefore cover up, often saying how worried they are that we will faint in the heat.

happiestcamper · 25/07/2018 10:09

Secret uniform could be forces. My DS is in the cadets and isnt allowed to walk to the unit with his uniform visible. Guessing it stems from lee rigby

BottleOfJameson · 25/07/2018 10:13

I also saw quite a few people on the sweltering tube yesterday in cardigans and jumpers clearly with tops on underneath. Unbelievable.

noselimit · 25/07/2018 10:23

Some people, rather oddly, don't seem to realise the relationships between their daily attire and the weather.

I know of a whole family who wear coats because you wear a coat when you go outside. The kids were coming out of school last week wearing thick jackets when everyone else was in a cardigan as an absolute maximum.

noselimit · 25/07/2018 10:24

But why do you have to cover your uniform?

Cadets have to cover their uniform going to and from the unit. It's to protect them against attacks.

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/07/2018 17:45

Oh, come on, that cannot be true.

Cadets have to cover their uniform going to and from the unit. It's to protect them against attacks

I hardly think throwing a coat on over a uniform where trousers and shoes will be visible on a slim fit young tidy haired person will adequately disguise them enough to protect them from anyone who wishes to harm them.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 25/07/2018 18:09

Err, where is this strange cadets rule? DS in in Sea Cadets and the Army and Air cadets are all on the same base in separate units. I see them all walking to and fro in their uniforms. Not smuggled in incognito. If someone wanted to attack them, it's quite easy to Google where they're all based.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 25/07/2018 18:12

That has to be nonsense, and if not complete nonsense, then a rule made up by a paranoiac with no understanding of risk.

AppleKatie · 25/07/2018 18:20

I’ve known cadets be made to change before they leave the premises because of attacks in the area. Often just verbal, but still not nice for teens to endure.

Not put a coat over though as you’re right that doesn’t really hide anything and makes them unreasonably hot in this weather.

catinboots9 · 25/07/2018 18:21

They are all old

Tarlu · 25/07/2018 18:23

I've been wondering this too. I saw a woman on the bus and i was sure she was going to do a ''surprise'' no clothes on! gig but underestimated how greenhouse ish it would be on bus. Have seen a few men with north face jackets on too. Confused

intheparcark · 25/07/2018 18:25

I saw a teenager in a thick hoodie earlier and she had the hood up

I'm wondering if it's the summer equivalent of winter'slook at me being all hardcore in the snow only wearing shorts and flip flops

Only in reverse.

Wow Apple, that's really shit. Our cadet units are in a very leafy suburb so I guess they're lucky in that respect!
