DH just gone away for three days, otherwise he would talk me down I’m sure. But right now it’s just me and the DC and I’ve opened DDs room to discover this.... nest? Chrysalis? It’s about 5cm x 3cm. Help!

He’s gorgeous Smile

It reminds me of a crusty old walrus covered in barnacles that we saw at a sanctuary and my daughter said it was ‘so beautiful’. Her interpretation of another living creature.

halfwitpicker · 21/06/2018 19:31

Well who knew

WigglyBlossom · 21/06/2018 19:31

The picture here is one of mine next to a normal sized garden snail.

I wonder what the normal one was thinking????????

halfwitpicker · 21/06/2018 19:32

Just googled GALS

Bit much for me i think

halfwitpicker · 21/06/2018 19:33

He wasn't, blossom. He was too busy shitting his snaily underkeckers.

NellMangel · 21/06/2018 19:36

Ah he's not so hideous in the last pictures. Roam free Gerald, enjoy the wind in your tentacle horn things.

IDontLikeZombies · 21/06/2018 19:50

I'm so glad this thread is still going.
I've built a whole scenario ala Mary Shelly in my head where the op calls for the MN mob with pitchforks and flaming torches and we all turn up wearing Marigolds, brandishing cucumber, sweet potatoes and tupperwear. Grin

BrownBeltMartialFartist · 21/06/2018 19:52

If you get giant African land snails make sure you check the substrate for eggs regularly (at least twice weekly is best) and freeze them/give to a reptile keeper who has a lizard that eats eggs, that or get a single baby not a pair or a bigger one from a group. The common ones pop out hundreds and there are so many babies getting used as reptile feeders or dumped, it can be hard to give them away.

WheelyCote · 21/06/2018 20:04

It was a snail😱 holy mother of Mary !

Standrews · 21/06/2018 20:26

Looking at the angle of the wall and ceiling, the thing looks quite big - how is it you have only just noticed it? Can you get a neighbour to investigate it with you? There is nothing worse than dealing with this kind of thing on your own.

petrolpump28 · 21/06/2018 20:27

check those substrates babes. You know you want to.

SinceWhenDid · 21/06/2018 20:32

Can't see the photo of Gerald in his tipper water 😭

ElChan03 · 21/06/2018 20:37

He's a snail that's seen the world lol

daffodillament · 21/06/2018 20:56

Sorry if I'm being thick but how can that huge thing be a snail ?? It's enormous !! Shit !

tastylancs · 21/06/2018 21:07

Daffodil He honestly was huge and so hideous, I could barely think straight last night. Didn't believe any of the crazy snail theories, though really wanted too. I got as close as I dared and could see no gentle snail like qualities at all.

Love this thread- made me laugh!

One thing to remember though is that snail slime has salmonella in it so be sure to wipe anything that it came in contact with.

CorvusUmbranox · 21/06/2018 21:18

I just showed the first picture to DH. His first guess was ‘bat’, Confused

bellinisurge · 21/06/2018 21:22

Jesus. Christ.

tastylancs · 21/06/2018 21:23

First thing I did was send photo to my DH - his guess was birds nest. Then he suggested putting the photo on a specialist forum where people could help me identify it. So I immediately thought of you lot Wink

‘Eenymeeny if my admittedly limited knowledge about snails is correct, Gerald is both Gerald and Geraldine. Snail sex is quite something to behold’

How topical Grin

Suzielou66 · 21/06/2018 21:42

I saw someone else’s suggestion and typed bursted gall / ecology into google and it comes up with loads of things that look similar to that.

michch · 21/06/2018 21:44

My partner says it definitely looks like a wasp nest. Try drowning it in wasp killer spray and leave the room. Good luck!

Eenymeeny123 · 21/06/2018 21:47

Ah he actually looks quite cute and a bit battered in your last picture. I feel a little guilty now for all the horrible things I posted about Gerald.Hmm he looks like he has been through the wars, still would have freaked if he was in my house. Gerald has become a star, we could see him in love island next, you know with all the sex !!!Grin

At least read the last couple of pages man Grin

1CantPickAName · 21/06/2018 22:03
