To wonder how normal it is for kids to share rooms these days?

Inspired by a post I saw earlier (different forum) about how kids dont really share rooms these days, it's not the 70's, kids shouldn't have to share unless there's no possible way at all to move...
I have 2 DD's, one isn't yet 1 and is in a cot in my room but will be sharing with the eldest when she moves into a bed (I only have a 2 bed house) Aibu to wonder how normal it is for kids to share these days? Is there a reason some people are so militant about kids having their own rooms?

I don’t know what other people regard as normal but my two nieces choose to share as do my two nephews. They both have decent size rooms, and are both close in age (primary years) so natural play mates.

We have no choice but to share. Cost of renting unfortunately.

Richer kids don't share, while poorer kids are lucky to have a bedroom let alone one they share with a sibling.

Most families I know have dc who share a room.
Although a lot of people seem to think there's a law against more then 2 dc per room.

My nephews (aged 16 and 13) share a room. The only other option would be to put one of them in the converted attic which doesn't have a door and is only separated from the landing by a staircase and some railings.

It's worked fine for them.

DS is 4 and currently has a large room to himself. We’re moving his twin sisters out of our room and into his as soon as they start sleeping through. The three of them will share until high school hopefully. We do have a third bedroom but I want them to have the special relationship that supposedly comes from sharing a room as small children. All my friends who shared a room as kids said it was great. I think by high school we’ll be making sure they all have their own space though.

I loved sharing with my two sisters as a kid. In bed, whispering and giggling. It was soothing and very bonding.
Once I hit my teens I wanted my own bedroom.

Umm richer people have their DC share. We live in the NYC area. It's $1000 a sqft. Kids share. We have 3 sharing one bedroom. I know of only 2 families who don't have their DC share. Normally you give your DC the master bedroom and take the 'kids' one for yourselves and make the walk in closet their playroom.

Dd's 11+12 have and will always share.
Ds's 9+3 also share.
Good for learning to share, be considerate and tidy imo!!

We have a 5-bed house but my DD's (now aged 9 and 12) share a room by choice and always have done! They use what would have been the other bedroom as a playroom/dump.

They do get along very well though. At the weekends they like to sleep in the same bed

I know you probably mean UK, but as a perspective, I live in HK and most kids share- I cant think of a family with 3+ DC where there's no sharing for example.

My DB and his wife weren't poor and have a decent sized house, but their children shared, until the older ones got closer to being teenagers and actively wanted their own space. They all seemed perfectly happy sharing as children.

DS 3 and DS 2 share a room. It’s not ideal and we are hoping to move when we can afford too.

@Want2bSupermum I'm in London were poorer families frequently are overcrowded so have people sleeping in the living room or children sleeping in their parents bedroom. On the other hand rich families often have more bedrooms than people. (And yes I know both. )

Contrary to usual mumsnet convention, I have a 10yo and 9yo of different sexes sharing & they have since they were tiny and moved on from our room. Its not ideal and we are hoping things improve for us soon, but it is possible -and frustrating when people tell you it's against 'the law'. We also have DC3 in with us for the foreseeable.

My children share by choice. They have their own rooms but don't want to separate, it's lovely!

My two shared until my eldest was about 7 - it was through choice though as we had spare rooms.

Our girls (biter no's 2 and 4) share, it's simply a number of rooms thing. They get the biggest room and have high sleepers so there's still plenty of floor space while the boys (biter no's 1 and 3) have a smaller room each. It was discussed 'as a family' when we made the last move so they had an input on what they thought would work best too.

I don't think it does them any harm to share and have to compromise with each other although ideally I'd have a nice, big, double room with walk in wardrobes and an ensuite for each of them of course.

DTs so far have chosen to share. We have space to convert if they don't want to any more but at the moment it's a tv room / den for them and they like that space.

We have four bedrooms and my two share.

My two who are 3 and 7 share a room. I have a 2 bed house, they are perfectly fine. I know friends whose kids choose to share although they have bigger houses.

My boys 7 and 4 share out of choice they’re inseparable

blue I know plenty of not so poor families in London who have their DC share.

We only have 2 bedrooms right now. We don't have any excess rooms without putting drywall up.

DD 11 and DS 6 have to share a room. Not ideal but it works.

DS6 and DD5 share a room. We have a 3rd room but DD would never sleep in a room on her own so sharing has helped.
