To believe that kids sat inside supermarket trolleys is disgusting

Just that really.
Never allowed my DC to do it.

I think it is gross that some guardians allow children to sit amongst the groceries in the supermarket trolley.
Makes me shudder that they could have dog shit or other unmentionables on their outside footwear. This would contaminate their shopping and the next unsuspecting persons. I also think it's dangerous having a kid hanging off the edge of a trolley. Pisses me off to see this. Am I alone?

You are not alone. I hate it. It's disgusting and unsanitary, and I wish they'd clean the carts between uses or at least give us some put-down papers. It's also unsafe--I watched one lady turn around for a second, her kid stood up, and promptly topped out head first. There was a huge CLUNK as his head hit the floor, and all she did was gather him up and tell him he should've expected that to happen. :(

TheBrilloPad · 10/06/2018 23:26

Trollies live outdoors with Fox piss/shit, bird shit, rats etc. They aren't hygienically cleaned each night GrinGrinGrin Most shops hardly ever have those trollies with two kid seats, which I need with two toddlers, so one always goes in the main part. Couldn't care less what anyone thinks.

Pigeonpost · 10/06/2018 23:26

Lolz at "unmentionables"!

KilledByHerOwnCardigan · 10/06/2018 23:26

To clarify: I'm talking about older kids in the part of the buggy where you put your food, NOT kids safely stowed in the seat that's designed for that purpose.

Battleax · 10/06/2018 23:26

Maybe it's just me obsessing about hygiene, however, could it be dangerous?

Yes, that’s the only reason to worry about it and it does happen.

MelissaElderflower · 10/06/2018 23:27

Possible wind up..?😎🙄

MsJudgemental · 10/06/2018 23:27

I hate this too, but we seem to be alone. For some reason, people seem to think that children’s shoes have some special status- would they put food in a trolley that they had seen an adult stand in? I don’t think so. We don’t have shoes on in the house, but will get flamed for that!

Lollipop30 · 10/06/2018 23:27

@Battleax
For me it’s becau they’re already in use. I have baby in carrier then one in seat and one sat in the back, until it’s full then she can walk. Then she’s walking for less time so it takes me less time dragging her round.

Fluffyears · 10/06/2018 23:29

I would put shopping in a trolley an adult has stood in. Newsflash, food has packaging!!!!!!!

usernamefromhell · 10/06/2018 23:29

YABU. I just don't understand where people find the time to worry about stuff like this.

And by the way what about every time you touch a handle on public transport: think of the germs that have been in contact with it. Think of all the people who have touched your hand when they give you change in shops: where do you think their hands have been?

It's this sort of ridiculous paranoia about totally unpreventable exposure to microbes of various kinds that is behind a lot of the allergies people have these days - we are so sanitised and paranoid about non-harmful "dirt" that we have damaged our immune systems.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 10/06/2018 23:29

Here's a tip folks -

If your food ain't in a packet give it a wee wash so the dog shite germs are washed away before you eat it.

You're welcome

My kids love sitting in the trolley. They eat food in there too

Boooommm · 10/06/2018 23:29

I assume you've have never worked in a food processing factory warehouse or a supermarket. Kids shoes are the worries. I spent a year working in an orange juice factory. you would never drink again if you spent a day there.

Battleax · 10/06/2018 23:31

Blimey lolli, nag the manager for some of the double seater ones. You’re suffering unnecessarily there. It’s hard work with two, but a sling as well and still one without a seat? Sod that Shock

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 10/06/2018 23:31

I’m more worried about the safety aspect tbh

Willow2017 · 10/06/2018 23:31

Ffs its a slow night tonight!
Contaminate the packages!

What about all the stuff thats been in the trolley overnight? Rats, mice, foxes?
If the kids had dog shit on thier shoes you would bloody know about it.
Do you decontamibate all the packaging? Somebody had to handle it at least 10 times before you picked it up.
The trolley handle? Who knows if mr or mrs Bloggs washed thier hands after going to the loo or picking thier nose or sneezing last time?
My teens did this when small and surprisingly we all survived the contamination. 😀

Fluffyears · 10/06/2018 23:32

Would it be worth getting harnesses though inside so kids can’t stand up and have accidents as it does seem there are times when kids do need to ride in trolleys. I’ve seen the aftermath of a kid toppling out and it literally takes 2 seconds whilst the parent is not looking at them as they are shopping.

blablabla81 · 10/06/2018 23:32

I agree with you - dirty shoes which have most likely stepped in poo, dog wee and gob at some point rubbing all in the trolley is vile

AnnieAnoniMouser · 10/06/2018 23:32

Give your head a wobble. The least of your worries with supermarket trolley is a child’s shoes. Truly.

Surroundedbycats · 10/06/2018 23:33

I donto like doing this personally but given that many supermarkets don't have two seater trolleys I often have no choice. They don't cater for twins trolleys athe my local supermarket are hardly sanitary anyway

Fluffyears · 10/06/2018 23:34

I really don’t understand this. Have you seen the trucks, the warehouse.....the food is in bogging places before your trolley.

BetterEatCheese · 10/06/2018 23:34

I'm concerned that you think trolleys would be fairly clean if children didn't do this! Packaging is there for a reason

Torridon19 · 10/06/2018 23:35

...to all the supermarket workers who some of the Mumsnet posters here think are covered in poo, pubes and other unmentionables....please post on here and tell em they're friggin' mad.....and filthy....

Bowiesequins · 10/06/2018 23:35

I was shopping yesterday and saw a child who was at least 9 or 10 say in the trolley. That was weird

What was weird about it? You have literally no idea why the child was in there. Perhaps there was a really good fucking reason. Remove your judgy pants!

ItsNachoCheese · 10/06/2018 23:36

My dn loved sitting in the trolley when my dsis and i would go shopping before i had my ds. He has also had a shot in the trolley too and loved it.

chewybacca · 10/06/2018 23:37

I work in a supermarket. It annoys me when kids sit in the actual trolley (not the seats) because it is dangerous.
Kid leans out and falls straight onto a very hard concrete floor.
Trolleys are not designed for weight moving in them.

Hygiene wise...trolleys never get washed, but don't live outside. They are brought inside at night. I very much doubt that rats/foxes/ mice play on them but they are not clean!
