To believe that kids sat inside supermarket trolleys is disgusting

Just that really.
Never allowed my DC to do it.

I think it is gross that some guardians allow children to sit amongst the groceries in the supermarket trolley.
Makes me shudder that they could have dog shit or other unmentionables on their outside footwear. This would contaminate their shopping and the next unsuspecting persons. I also think it's dangerous having a kid hanging off the edge of a trolley. Pisses me off to see this. Am I alone?

Your reasons are absurd. I wouldn't do it because I saw one tip over once with a little girl in it but if they're sitting nicely no harm.

SpareASquare · 10/06/2018 23:59

Meh.
I actually lol'd when I read this.
Risk assessment.

Have never ever given any thought to the hygiene of a shopping trolley. I vaguely knew people did but not to this extent.
I love how it moves to the danger of it when the hygeine angle didn't work out as imagined.

Mookatron · 11/06/2018 00:01

Birds shit on supermarket trolleys. Yabu.

Whitecurrents · 11/06/2018 00:02

No you're not alone - it's rank. Along with people who put toddlers with shoes on in the playpen in the gym changing room.

Rhiannon13 · 11/06/2018 00:05

Um ok. I've looked after dozens of children but have never had to put them in the trolley. Two years and up can walk, under two in the pushchair (so can only buy a basketful of food). If they're your own kids leave under twos at home with a friend or relative if possible to do a full shop? Sorry but I don't get it.

Singlenotsingle · 11/06/2018 00:05

I think you're in the minority. It never gave me a problem. How otherwise do you get your toddler round the supermarket - try to manoeuvre trolly with one hand and buggy with the other? What if you've got 2 DC?

Worieddd · 11/06/2018 00:06

THere are probably more germs on the money you use to pay for your shopping tbh

PorkFlute · 11/06/2018 00:07

I put mine in trolleys and they were never hurt. Only the deep ones though so no risk of falling out and they were instructed to keep their fingers in. They did occasionally get bumped by other people’s trolleys as toddlers when they were walking though as I would have them hold the side of the trolley taking up a lot of space.
What other people deem an acceptable risk isn’t really your business op.

chewybacca, a Tesco employee was awarded a payout because they found in his favour. He contracted Weil's Disease from handling empty packaging and food waste.

Tesco knew that the storage area and trolleys were "dripping in rat urine" but didn't do anything about it.

Someone went round the UK taking swaps from trolleys and some packaged items. Handling dog shit, would have been safer.

"I sometimes put my 2 year old in , but she's straight out as soon as she spots the peperami, I think it looks ridiculous when their are kids over the age of 3/4 In them though why?!"

Because they are tired. When I take my three year old Granddaughter out for the day, we often pop in our local Aldi on the way home and I sit her in the trolley if she asks. She stays sat down. I wish she wouldn't ask, because it means she can see everything and it costs me a fortune. The Trolleys are left out overnight and we have a good sized rat population, as well as it being on at least two fox routes.

Babynut1 · 11/06/2018 00:10

Maybe supermarkets should provide adequate trolley facilities in which case people wouldn’t need to put their children inside.
I have a 2.5 yr old and a 4 yr old. Mostly the 4 yr old walks around but I have had to put him in occasionally.
Our local Asda are fab as they do trolleys with 2 seats. Only 1 seat trolleys in all other supermarkets including our massive tesco 🙄

imweirdandcool · 11/06/2018 00:18

Do you always wash your hands before eating? Eat on the tube or bus? Let people walk outdoor shoes on your carpet?

If so you cannot chat shit about this being nasty

Italiangreyhound · 11/06/2018 00:18

You are no alone, OP. Kids shoes sitting in the trolley where I will be putting my shopping! Not nice.

Italiangreyhound · 11/06/2018 00:22

'Birds shit on supermarket trolleys'

Dogs shit on streets.

Don't know about the OP, but yes, I usually wash my hands before eating, take my shoes off before walking about in my own home, or others, and I'm rarely on a bus or tube to eat. But even if I did not that is my choice, my hands, my shoes, my carpet etc.

Trolley's are used to other people.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 11/06/2018 00:28

I used to go straight for the wine section and build a seat out of wine in a box inside the trolley. DC would sit in it like it was a throne. We would both go home happy and I always had plenty of wine to drink. Ahhh happy days.

Sayhellotothesun · 11/06/2018 00:43

I think it's disgusting you touch the trolley handle with your hand Hmm

MrsAngle · 11/06/2018 00:47

I'm with the OP on this one. I hate seeing kids sat in the trolleys.

They have seats for small children. The actual inside of the trolley is for the things you are buying, not to push a child around.
I saw one incident in Tesco a couple of years ago where a large child sat in a trolley had a nasty finger injury where the mother had bumped into a pillar, right where the child had a finger sticking through the trolley. She was blaming the shop. Very loudly.

Skittlesandbeer · 11/06/2018 00:49

OP, thanks for reminding me of when I used to do this with my DD. Some days there was more groceries than girl in there. I’d pretend to put her on the conveyor belt with the rest of the shop. She’d giggle and love it! Wish I’d taken a pic, but it was so normal it never occurred to me.

Also never encountered another shopper or staff member who gave us a dirty look. I, and they, assumed I was politely containing her so no one had to contend with her running the aisles or grabbing stuff from displays.

Skittlesandbeer · 11/06/2018 00:50

walkingdeadfangirl now THAT is a parenting win/win if ever I heard one. Hides the wine, too. Brilliant!

squeekums · 11/06/2018 01:15

If thats your biggest concern in life right now, think yourself lucky

Do you not bathe your kid op? Do you put them in hazmat suits to play outside?

coolwalking · 11/06/2018 01:20

YANBU - but hygiene reasons aren't why I dislike it. It's that the inside of the trolley is not meant for children and is clearly marked as not allowed.

It's an example of parents thinking rules don't apply to their little darlings. They are far to precious/stressed/bored to obey rules and follow instruction.

123wtf456 · 11/06/2018 01:38

The other thing I'm surprised nobody has mentioned is, have you actually ever tried putting a toddler who is refusing to sit in the seat into the seat?! Mine are 1 (too young for reasoning) and my eldest who I should be able to reason with has a disability so also cannot be reasoned with. It's physically impossible to get their legs into the seats when they are kicking and screaming!!!!

felldownarabbithole · 11/06/2018 02:01

I agree OP. But the only reason I agree is that I have OCD.

I know if I did not - I would be saying you're bonkers. So I do not call others unreasonable if they place their children in the trolley amongst groceries.

But then I also take my groceries out of their packaging and transfer them into my own containers the moment I get home... which is how I handle it.

Amatullah · 11/06/2018 02:04

Hahaha unmentionables..

Yabvu. And slightly odd!!

differentnameforthis · 11/06/2018 02:05

What's more "unmentionable" than dog shit though?

Never allowed my DC to do it. Good for you. I would never allow my child to turn into a judgmental arse. Grin

My friend & her dd once caught scabies from the trolley handle, so I guess if you are going to get something, you will get it regardless.
