To believe that kids sat inside supermarket trolleys is disgusting

Just that really.
Never allowed my DC to do it.

I think it is gross that some guardians allow children to sit amongst the groceries in the supermarket trolley.
Makes me shudder that they could have dog shit or other unmentionables on their outside footwear. This would contaminate their shopping and the next unsuspecting persons. I also think it's dangerous having a kid hanging off the edge of a trolley. Pisses me off to see this. Am I alone?

Err no - I have actual important things to think about!

My school age special needs child sits in a trolly when im in the supermarket...i get very horrible judgmental looks from lots of people...especially when my child is making sounds too...i dont like it...i can do without your thread and peoples nasty looks...frankly thats the last thing we need...nevertheless i will keep putting him in there for as long as i wish...and anyone who has a problem with that truly NEED TO GET A LIFE!!! There are bigger problems in this world!

accepting · 11/06/2018 02:48

Um ok. I've looked after dozens of children but have never had to put them in the trolley. Two years and up can walk, under two in the pushchair (so can only buy a basketful of food). If they're your own kids leave under twos at home with a friend or relative if possible to do a full shop? Sorry but I don't get it.

Have you looked after a disabled child? One that has you as their sole carer? One that you want to take to the outside world because you feel they deserve to live a full life like everyone else?

So many comments here just made me realise just how ignorant people can be at how other people live their lives!! Before you judge us please consider that other people have circumstances very very different to yours...and some people have to do things differently to you because they have very little choice!

Monty27 · 11/06/2018 03:07

It's more a safety issue than a hygiene issue. That's down to DPS surely.
If your child persists on sitting in the trolly and you can't control that, don't bring them to the supermarket. you are putting them at risk.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/06/2018 04:02

They have seats for small children.
Yes, very small children. If you have a tall child for their age, you’re pretty stuffed. Long legs are impossible to thread through the holes. Dd was too tall for the seats way before she went to school at only just 4.

Why do you think children like dd when tired / poorly should have to walk round the shop yet shorter and older children fit in the trolley seats just to pander to your sensitivities op?

frasier · 11/06/2018 04:11

I'd rather they were confined to a trolley rather than running around the store or lying on the floor

This

faithinthesound · 11/06/2018 04:30

You know what is more gross?

Squished kid.

Some people put their kids in the cart because it means they're not farting about the place including into the parking lot.

faithinthesound · 11/06/2018 04:30

Oh lord that was supposed to say DARTING.

FurryDice · 11/06/2018 04:35

You are not alone. Aka YANA. Makes a change from YANBU

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 11/06/2018 05:26

'Guardians"? 'Contamination'? Have I stepped into an episode of The Handmaid's Tale?

Shadow666 · 11/06/2018 05:30

I don't think it's safe either.

At our local Costco, the staff give you a warning if the kids are sitting anywhere other than the seat.

londonrach · 11/06/2018 05:34

Yanbu but not due to dog poo etc but the risk of being hurt in a trolly. Ive seen too many accidents and i dont work in a supermarket just shop. However every parent does want their think best so yabu as their choice

Shadow666 · 11/06/2018 05:36

Also, don't the trolleys usually have a sign on the handle saying don't let your kids stand in the trolley? Apparently there are a lot of accidents due to this. Usually when the parent turns their back for a minute and the kid tries to climb out.

ToffeePennie · 11/06/2018 05:49

I do it. But ive never used a deeper trolly for my shopping, and the smaller ones don’t have child seats. So generally I sling the baby, stick my big boy in the trolley (he’s nearly 4 and he knows the consequences) and away we go.
Alternately I’ll grab a trolley with a baby seat. Stick the baby in there, put his big brother in the basket and whizz round.
I’ve never bought enough to warrant the larger trolley, my biggest boy knows to keep still and he’s too big for the actual child seats anyway, but too tired after school to walk very far.

Freaklikemeee · 11/06/2018 05:57

I agree completely OP. Although supermarket trolleys are generally filthy, aren't they?
I once pointed out to my supermarket's customer services person that there was bird shit sprayed all over my trolley. Their response was "put it back and the rain will wash it off."

sashh · 11/06/2018 05:59

The last time I saw a child in an actual trolley it was actually 3 children, identical triplets about 3 or 4 years old. Mum had them in one trolley and dad had the one they were putting food in.

I thought it was a brilliant idea.

LuMarie · 11/06/2018 06:00

Kids eat dirt. And sand.

The hand part where you push the trolley will have millions more germs than inside, indeneral supermarket trolleys are not going to be clean!

Let people do whatever they need to do to get through a supermarket without a kid having a meltdown or getting lost or otherwise causing havoc I think!

Notso · 11/06/2018 06:03

Its not safe. I can see why people do it but I've also seen one tip with a child inside, it was nasty, her arm was broken and possibly several fingers.
Then there's the fact they are sitting in a filthy trolley with old meat juices and whatever, kids are hardly known for their hygiene. You see little ones drop their dummies in the trolley then pop them back in etc.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 11/06/2018 06:09

DD(19) and DS (13) both managed to survive the terrors of sitting in the trolley when they were too big for the baby seats and didn't want to walk around getting under other people's trollies. No accidents. And we've yet to be poisoned as far as I'm aware.

DS also used to like climbing into an empty lower shelf where I had to walk along and pretend to buy him Grin. I'm guessing that won't go down well on this thread either.

Betsy86 · 11/06/2018 06:21

accepting Flowers
I am with you on this i also have a special needs school age child and totally get your point. It does upset me bein judged and tutted at also x

onestepforwardtenstepsback · 11/06/2018 06:23

I do it because my ds 6 has special needs. He's too big to use the seat and can't walk round a supermarket, because it's sensory overload.
I can't push him in a special needs buggy and the trolley so I put him in the trolley.
Stop been judge not everyone's life is perfect.

crispysausagerolls · 11/06/2018 06:35

It really annoys me when I see this, but only because I’m an epic goody goody and it goes against the rules on the trolley handle signs 😂😂🙈🙈

Gingerninj · 11/06/2018 06:40

DD goes on the seats at the front, DS either goes in the trolley or holds onto the handle so I know he's not wondered off. I'd rather have a bit of dog shit on some packaging that's going in the bin anyway

Strugglingtodomybest · 11/06/2018 06:43

I did it when the kids were younger, purely for the fun of it. I was/am aware of the dangers and they weren't allowed to stand up. The hygiene aspects... not something I'd ever worry about.

BertrandRussell · 11/06/2018 06:45

Just take their shoes off. Sorted.
